Blocks away, bars, shops, restaurants with patio seating surrounds the area. This is its own tourist destination and not just a train station stop. I would not have guessed it opened in 1882. For such an old station it is not run-down nor dated - relatively clean too. The architecture is uncommon and quite amazing with lots of brickwork. What's more amazing is seeing trains going by above ground but within an enclosure!

It is located on the U55 line which is quite useful for connections into Bundestag and Berlin Central Station, the overall journey across the line from Brandenburger Tor to the Hauptbanhof (Central Station) is 8 minutes and as I recall, this is the only line this station is on, meaning most likely you're going to have to visit another train station to change, being one of those two, to get the metro into Brandenburger Tor, perhaps because of this, it might just be easier to get the bus as I found to be easier when traveling from my Hotel. I called at this station by chance, hoping to get into Central Station so I used the U55 line to go the full length of the train route which is 8 minutes. There did appear to be one end of the station cornered off, which probably was the place you would get off the train for the U55 here at Brandenburger Tor, so they appeared to be turning and using the other plaform for some reason. This metro station did also seem bright and modern, it didn't seem old, dark and smelly like some trains on the network and also had lift access, warranting a solid three star rating which is supported by the location being meters away from the Brandenburg Gate. 3 star rating due to reasons discussed above, sadly I don't feel it is worth any higher as the station remains understaffed and of course it is only on the U55 line.

I remember the train slowing down through a brightly lit and empty station, except for an East German guard or two.. I still vividly remember the green tiles line the walls of the Unter den Linden (not Brandenburger Tor) station. I had the opportunity to return to the Brandenburger Tor station last year. I was walking down the Unter den Linden and heading towards the Brandenburg gate, where this time I could freely walk through unlike the Berlin Wall days. The station came into view in front of me and I immediately knew that I had been here before (albeit in passing underground). I walked downstairs, walked through the corridors and touched those green tiles. That's quite a reminder of what was and how walls could happen again.

It eventually became "Eberswalder Strasse", referencing a nearby street, after the wall came down. Another fun fact is that this underground station is actually above the ground - parts of the subway line U2 run overground in the middle of Schönhauser Allee. This part of the line was finished in the 1910s and is running ever since. Today, the intersection Schönhauser Allee/Pappelallee/Danziger Straße/Kastanienallee is one of the busiest intersections of Prenzlauer Berg. It's a short walk to Mauerpark, Kulturbrauerei, lots of restaurants, boutique shops, and you'll get tram connection to Mitte, Pankow, or Friedrichshain. Oh, and East Berlins most famous Currywurst is located right across the station - Konnopke's.

It's also within walking distance 20-25 minutes from Museum Island. There's shopping and public parks in the neighborhood too. This area was also where in the evening there were quite a fair number of unfortunate homeless peoples in the streets. Didn't feel like they were bothering anyone though just a note for those walking around later at night.

It got also quite nice view to the Berlin city center, if you like to see like see the whole center, this sure is a good spot. The station is also very close to the S-Bahnhof Warschauer Straße, if you need to change to this station, just need to walk about 3-5 mins, then you will reach the platform. If you like trains, here is a great spot to see the trains and railways. Inside and around the station have many different shops and restaurants. If you need something to drink or eat before you get on the train (or after), it is quite convenient to do so. Because of all the construction going around the S-Bahnhof, for awhile already. This area does look pretty messy to me. And you could see graffiti and some rubbishes everywhere, the street also seem quite dirty. It is not a good impression actually. It made the station a bit ugly. it's always full people here. They a got a small parking for bikes, but isn't big enough, so you could see bikes locks up everywhere as well. Hopefully the station will be better after the renovation.

It take sometime from A to B, lots of stairs needed to go through. If you are in hurry, better run a little. There are two line go through this station, U1 and U6. Outside the station, I find it quite cool. The station builded right on the riverside. Because of it, it looks quite different than most of the U-Bahn stations in Berlin. There is a little bridge outside, from there you can have a pretty nice view, whether day or night. In summer time, this is also popular for the birds. They like to build their homes here, quite a view. Some of the city boat tours also will pass by when they returning their meeting point. There are a library, Poco and Mehringplatz around, other than that not much going on here. If you want some snacks or Take-away, there's a small Döner shop inside the station. I kinda like this station, just when it comes to a rush timing, it could be like in a small race.

Historically,…read moreit was fully in East Berlin but during the Cold War it was still served from S-Bahn and U-Bahn lines from West Berlin and countries west of the Iron Curtain, hence this has been quite commonly used in popular culture especially associated with Communism, for example this station was even used in the Call of Duty: World at War game. As a station however, I really don't like this place, I find it to be rather old-fashioned and have a rather confusing layout, I entered through a lift and then I needed to get another lift to the other trains, which was out of order, there was no signs to show this until you got to the lift in the station, and even then it wasn't clear. The station staff didn't speak very good English, hence communication was a struggle with the very limited staff members working, for example, they couldn't help redirect me for my journey or even offer help or suggestions, and they didn't even seem to make any attempt at trying. The location is decent with a few shops including a Starbucks nearby also. I also managed to use the "Metro" part of the station, this was okay, it was a typical metro station again, and it wasn't the nicest, cleanest or most modern of metro stations, which basically sums up the train station as a whole. Unhelpful staff, elevator issues and confusing layouts sadly warrant a single one-star rating for Bahnhof Berlin-Friedrichstraße Station in my opinion, which is a shame as this station has a historical element to it, due to its involvement in being one of the few stations in East Berlin, to have services into West Berlin and the Iron Curtain countries (West of course) during the time of the Cold War, but for now sadly deserves a single one-star rating.

I personally really like how the look of the station from outside. It just looks very different and cool. The station is also one of the busiest stations in Berlin. There are many different kind of trains will pass this station. Inner or city to city. In side the station, has quite a lot fast food restaurants. Quite convenient when you need something to eat on the rush. So it really convenient to get around berlin from here. What I don't really like is the transmit system inside. The infomantion isn't that clear for the people who is on rush. It surey take some time to find the right way to the right direction. Especially if you need to change from S1 to S7, S75 those train. My suggestion, stay in the middle or follow where most of the people going. Beside than that, the station itself also seem bit dirty.

The U-Bahnhof Schönhauser Allee itself isn't really big, no really fancy architecture style or…read moreanything special. Just a ragelar station you can see in Berlin. For me, what really interesting are the surrounding. There are lot of shops, supermarkets and restaurants around. It's surely this neighbour does lack of place to shop. Under the station, you can see lot ls of bikes parking here, somehow looks pretty cool and urban. The view on the platform is other thing I like, especially when they turn the lights on. The station didn't really cover by walls. So at the winter time, it could be really cool. The station doesn't have any info office, but other than that, it got what the station normally needs. If you want to go to the S-Bahnhof Schönhauser Allee, get out of the station first and go behind the mall, then you will find it.

My advice to anyone upon finding out that this station is the closest to their destination is to consider switching to S-bahnhof Bellevue, perhaps. It's not at all close to Schönhauser Allee and chances are you'll spend a good €30 on a taxi getting back up to where you want to go, but the walk along the canal is quite scenic and it meets up with that lovely wrought-iron bridge. Especially beautiful in autumn with the leaves falling and that. Again, the main drawback to this station as an alternative to Schönhauser Allee would be its extremity from Prenzlauer Berg, but I suppose that's a decision you'll have to make, whether the trade off would be worth it.
