When we arrived in Berlin, my sister and I did not know how to get to our hotel (at the time, we didn't know that it was just minutes away from Spittelmarkt Station, or how to get to Spittelmarkt Station, for that matter). So at the airport we asked at the information desk about getting to our hotel, and we were told that there were only two options: taking a cab or a regular public transit bus, and that the cab ride would be extremely expensive (total lie--the fare from our hotel to the airport was only about €25 or €30). So we stupidly chose to take public transit.
Now, taking public transit from the airport wouldn't have been so horrible if there were a train/subway/tram/skytrain thing that runs frequently on a track, but the only transport, other than a supposedly super expensive cab (so not true!!!) was a bus. And not even a coach bus, but a regular public transit bus. And even though it's a bus that runs to and from the airport, where it would be reasonable to expect the majority of people to have large suitcases, it was just a regular bus that didn't have any extra space for luggage. Seriously, what city, especially a big city, only has a regular public transit bus going to and from the airport? (Even Vancouver, which has shitty transit service, has a skytrain going to and from the airport, and it has quite a lot of room for luggage.) If there is a coach bus available, we were not told about it, but that could be another lie.
Anyway, we were told how to get to our hotel: to take the bus to such-and-such a station (I don't remember which station--maybe Alexanderplatz), and from that station to take the train a couple of stops to Spittelmarkt. However, after about twenty minutes or so of a horrible bus ride (the bus was overcrowded with people coming from the airport with their luggage, and more people getting on at later stops as the bus made its way through the city), the bus stopped just outside of another station, and the driver kicked everyone off, announcing that the bus was stopping there, as there was a "demonstration". Great, so now we have no idea where we are or how to get to our hotel. Also, we were dropped off at Hauptbahnhof Station, one of the biggest stations in Europe.
We went to the transit information booth inside the station and were given a print out of directions to get to our hotel. (Why we didn't just get a cab at this point, I have no idea. Turns out that cabs are fairly cheap and efficient in Berlin, at least compared to other cities. I highly recommend taking cabs in Berlin if the transit route is not convenient.) The instructions were to take the train to Alexanderplatz, transfer to the U2 line, and go to Spittelmarkt. Easy, but annoying since our trip was taking more time than it should have, and involving an extra transfer.
We arrived at Alexanderplatz and managed to find the route we needed. However, in order to get to the platform for the U2 line, we had to go down a level, and we couldn't find an escalator. We eventually found an elevator, but for some reason, it didn't go to the platform that we needed. So we had to drag our heavy luggage (my sister and I don't do the "backpacking around Europe" thing, and each had a 50lb suitcase and duffle bag, as well as our purses) down not just one flight of stairs, but two. Well, if that wasn't bad enough, after going down the two flights, we had to go UP one flight of stairs! For fuck's sake!
It was such a terrible, and PAINFUL experience. I'm surprised I didn't damage my back. As we were waiting for our train, we did see a person in a wheelchair on the platform, so we wondered how the hell they got there, because there weren't any escalators or elevators that we could see.
