First off, be prepared to spend a lot of money at Van Hage. Not because you'll be coming out with armfuls of stuff, but because you need a second mortgage to walk through the door. No, it's not that bad, but it is pricey, much more so than your small independent nurseries but on a par with places like Homebase for the price of bedding plants and staple gardening gubbins. Where the prices really start to ramp up is with the more specialist plants and the extra stuff they stock. There's not a lot you can't buy at Van Hage. Every plant you can think of is available, from £1.99 BOGOF bedding plant 6-packs right up to huge palms and trees costing £1000 each - I'm not kidding. There's the usual array of gardening equipment too, and a separate section selling every type of mower or cutting device imaginable. Then there are chocolates, gifts, BBQs (Weber and Outback etc), books, crockery and cutlery, giftwrap, clothing, cut flowers, home furnishing, firepits and chimneas, outdoor furniture, bird feeders and seeds etc, a gigantic range of pots, indoor and out, sheds and garden buildings, fencing and all kinds of other stuff. Most of it is high quality and carefully chosen, so if you're into having a garden a bit different from everybody else then you'll be happy here. Café VH is worth a visit, but again, it's pricey. They do neat little trays for kids and a pick'n'mix menu with fresh fruit, some organic bits and pieces and kid friendly lidded cups with straws. They sell a range of hot and cold food and there is something for everyone. Lots of seating inside and out means you'll always have somewhere to sit, although it does get pretty busy at times. If you do have children with you there are two other places worthy of a visit to stop them from getting bored. The first is a large selection of animals. There are caged ones, including Marmoset monkeys and meerkats, and a big open area containing goats, rabbits, ducks and other things. There are also birds, lizards, guinea pigs and others. You wander around the paths, and every now and then there are feed dispensing machines to let the kids give the animals their dinner. There are animal fact sheets for the kids to take away and colour in too. Next you can go to the miniature railway. It doesn't run every day I don't think, so best to check before you visit if it's a must-do on your trip. My little boy is Thomas the Tank Engine mad, and to him, that's who he's riding on (or James if it's the red one that day!). There is plenty of room on the open carriages and it does two loops, taking a slightly different route each time. There are various ornaments and plants dotted around the track so something for the kids to look at too. The steam and tooting of the engine add to the ride and it's actually quite a cool thing to take your little one on, to break their day up! There is also a shop next to Café VH that sells a lot of local produce, much of it organic or sustainably farmed. It's not just fruit and veg in here though, there are drinks, snacks, breakfast cereals, tinned food, dairy and bakery products - all sorts of stuff. On summery days there is an ice cream van parked out the front too, so if that's your bag then get yourself a 99 and sit on one of the many benches or walls out front and soak up the sun. They also have a HUGE car park, and they need it, weekends at this place are astonishingly busy. Christmas is another period where Van Hage comes alive. They have a Father Christmas grotto to take the kids, and a magnificent indoor area with blacked walls and all manner of lights, ornaments, and all things Christmas. Again, very pricey for some of it but going to Van Hage at Christmas is one of those modern day things you have to do if you live nearby! They also have mechanically driven Polar Bears in displays which the kids love.

Probably the best garden centre I have been to. Great stock, restaurant and best of all a farm zoo…read moreand fantastic miniature railway which is loved by children and animals alike. It is not cheap, you could call it the Marks & Spencer of garden centres, but it is good. Well worth a visit and really is better than the rest

It's probably the largest collection of nurseries and garden centres in the country. It feeds my dreams of what I would do if I owned an acre or two. There's so much on offer from many of the specialist centres - whether your need is for a small shrub for a window box or your whole garden re-designed. You would need more than a day to visit all that Crews Hill has to offer. As well as nurseries, there are aquatic centres selling tropical fish and swimming pool and spa specialists. As with many gardens centres, they don't just sell flowers there are tons of items for the home: candles, ornaments, bric a brac etc. It really is a browsers delight and beware of impulse buying. I never thought I'd have need of a carved wooden elephant or a collection of painted pine cones, but those have been two of my recent purchases here. One day, I'll find a place to put them.

The garden centres here are cheaper than those where I live and they have far more choice. they are also well worth visiting at Christmas, as the displays are wonderful and they have lots of decorations to choose from. If you come down the road from the Enfield end, the very last garden centre on your left has a great cafe. On Sundays, they do hot roast beef rolls with horseradish that are to die for.

At this time of year (Christmas) the first thing you come across is the Christmas light department this is a blacked out area full of fairy lights it is so pretty I could spend all day there. Next is the gift department this is very well stocked by someone with a great eye I do not know of a better set out gift department in any garden centre. There is also a great selection of greeting cards. Outside as you might expect are the plants these are also well arranged with the current seasonal plants first then the herbs then the normal plants alphabetically. Back inside are the house plants, tools, seeds, bulbs and feeds etc. You can always find what you want. Great shop.

I was able to walk the dog around the garden centre with ease. I bought some wind twirlers which I enjoy watching in the garden. I also bought a gold finch attraction bird feeder. Golly gosh, the gold finch birds turned up the next day along with magpies. The plants are expensive but the quality is very good. The staff are really knowledgeable and friendly. I love the planters. There is something for everyone here. It is a great place for getting that special present. I like niknaks and this place fascinates me.

We were told that our poor after care killed the plant. The manager was rude, patronising and extremely unhelpful. I have returned to buy more plants and flowers from the nursery and there was no goodwill. In spite of explaining that £14.99 was not going to an issue but the lack of common courtesy and good customer care was appalling. Just very poor attitude and behaviour. The way the manager spoke was very rude and not sure he would want to be spoken to in that manner. Will be careful before buying plants from here in future

Told about this place by a neighbour who talked of this magical land where plants were of fantastic quality and un-London-like low prices. In order to access this place you have to go in through what looks like a persons front driveway and then into a set back car park. Is a bit weird, a bit of a tight fit, but trust me, it's there. They have a great array of on-location grown plants by season and a host of greenhouses that you can wander through to pick up your seedlings and one also dedicated solely to a fantastic selection of bulbs. They often have bulk buy offers on too. Shrubs, trees, fruit trees, annuals, grasses, hedging...you name it they have probably got it. So why does this not get 5 stars you ask? Well, there is one key thing missing form this place that I'm sure would be a worthwhile investment for them: a cafe. Their demographic are the types of people who like to take their time to see everything, then pause, and then carry on going. There is nowhere to take that pause, and that unfortunately often means that people end their mooch around much quicker than they otherwise would. Oh, handy tip, they do have toilets, but they are at the end of the car park and not in the garden centre itself. A little weird, but at least they have them
