Unbelievable customer service! Forget about everything you have ever heard about car salesmen…read morebecause Howard Johnson has reinvented it. Will go back for all our future cars. Thank you so much.

I have just come back from holiday, after recently buying a car from Peter Howard Johnston's…read moreEdinburgh, and decided to write a review based on my personal experience. I knew I would have to travel a fair distance to view/test drive this car, so I phoned first and spoke to Peter. I was assured of the condition, and general details of the car to such an extent, that I instantly felt very confident, and felt I was genuinely dealing with a very honest and trustworthy company. I had to phone back a few times over the next few days to arrange when I would be able to come, and also to arrange insurance and road tax. This was when I first spoke to Raymond, and I have to say, again I came off the phone, satisfied and confident that the car would be everything I was told it would be. I phoned yet again, a day before I left to confirm everything was ok, and also to get directions from the main Train Station in Edinburgh. I was instantly told by Raymond, to phone him when I got to the station and he would come and pick me up. This, I thought was an extremely kind gesture, considering the garage is a good 3 miles from Edinburgh city centre. When I arrived at the garage, I found the car to be exactly as advertised, and exactly as described by both Raymond and Peter. We took it out for a good test drive, and along the way had a good chat and laugh with Raymond. Once we arrived back at the garage, I was smitten and didn't need any further convincing. At this point I met Peter and found him to be as friendly and welcoming as Raymond. Along with an already very good price for a very good car, PHJ also covered the cost of my first year's road tax, along with a £25 top up of fuel. Something I certainly didn't expect! All in all a very pleasant experience, and would highly recommend both the high standard of cars, and also the high standard of customer care that I received. I have already recommended them to friends and family, and would certainly remember them again in the future.

If you could give minus stars I would. I have never been so appalled at a companies ethics before…read more Don't be conned by the 'we MOT the car then guarantee it for a month' scam. I would be surprised if this car has even seen a garage before. It is now dead, 2months after spending £1500 on it. The sales man is very charming but it is all chat and not followed up by substance. If you decide to go here you might as well just give the guy a grand and walk away without a car and you would be better off than having to deal with this company. Avoid at all costs.

Do not buy a car from this Company. I bought a Vauxhall Astra on 22/7/14. I paid £1350 for the car…read more Made it clear to Connor that we wanted a tyre replaced, the boot fixed (it didn't open) and most importantly, the air conditioning fixed. It didn't work at all. Car was deliverd to us in a garage forecourt in Livingston. I foolishly paid my balance in cash and didn't check the car. Returned the car three days later, where after being "talked" at by Gary he finally agreed to change the tyre. He, or someone fixed the boot. Actually it didn't last and my husband eventually fixed it. This review could go on and on. The upshot is it took a further three months of unreturned calls, six trips to Musselburgh (at approx a cost of £200 in fuel), annual leave days, constantly having to chase them for updates on my car, several days of the car being off the road, having to write to them via trading standards under The Sale of Goods Act before eventually the air conditioning was fixed. I completely recognise one reviewers opinion of Gary, he is a thoroughly unpleasant man to deal with, he cuts phone calls short, pretends he can't remember who you are when you do get him, talks over you, keeps telling you it's not his fault (not sure whose fault it is, he sold me the car). I had to resort to recording my phone calls to him as there is no other way of keeping a record of what was said. His email account doesn't allow you to keep a record. I am now considering an action in the small claims court to try and recoupe my fuel costs. We are not wealthy people and a further two hundred pounds is a lot of money to us. Gary's parting shot on Friday was "I was ridiculous to think I could get my costs back". PLEASE DO NOT TAKE A CHANCE WITH THIS COMPANY.

It's ideal if you own a Peugeot. The service department…read morepersonnel is really friendly and try to help if they can. The service charges are not cheap and if you need new tires or any other parts you need to dig deep into your pockets. There is little space to maneuver when trying to park. In all fairness, there is little space to park anyway. If you go there on a Saturday, make sure you are early, let's say 8 o'clock in the morning , so that you will be able to wait for your car to be returned the same day. Should they decide to keep the car, you need to take the bus back home. This place is in the middle of nowhere, so be prepared of a bit of walking. I could be exaggerating a bit :-) In case you have a service done, they offer a free of charge top up service within the next 6 month. What a nice gesture!

Absolutely awful service. I don't know where to begin…read more Two weeks ago me and my partner purchased a used 2016 KIA Sportage from this garage. We went for the KIA due to it having 4 years manufacturer warranty remaining. We were told the car had Full Service History (which is needed for the KIA warranty to be valid). We paid for the car, a protective paint coating and a 2 year service package. On Sunday 13th October, when looking through the cars manuals and paperwork, we noticed the service book didn't have any service stamps from 2017 (inspection) and 2018 (major service). We went back to the garage to query this and was assured it would just be a clerical error and to phone KIA who would have the details. We did this and they told us they had no service records other than one from 2019. We went back to the garage on the Monday and still had no joy. We received a phone call Tuesday and was told by the original salesperson that they would sort it and get back to us. One week had gone by and we still hadn't heard anything. My partner phoned the garage and was told nobody was available to assist and she would get a phone call back. An hour later and still no phone call, so she phoned back and still everybody was too busy. At this point, it was becoming clear that nobody cared as Arnold Clark now had our money. My partner made a final attempt and requested to speak to a manger, which she was told they were all busy. My son then phoned Arnold Clark customer services who reassured him that there was nothing to worry about and everything would get sorted. He was advised to get my partner to phone back the garage and let them know you are about to escalate it to Customer Services, which will prompt a manager to phone her back. My partner received a call from a manager called Garrett. Due to the stress caused by this situation, my partner passed the phone to my son so he could speak on our behalf. Garrett very rudely asked my son "whats your problem?", which he responded very calmly and explained all of the above. Garrett kept cutting him off and talking over him repeatedly saying "But your mum didn't buy the car, but your mum didn't buy the car". My son then said he was going to terminate the call and escalate the complaint to customers service. Garrett then threatened my son, saying "if you escalate this to head office, he will slow down the whole process making it difficult". My son was shocked and came off the phone very concerned. We then escalated the complaint with customer services. This was logged immediately and shortly after the dealership phoned us full of apologies and tried offering us a 2 year Arnold Clark warranty instead of the KIA one. This was refused. It was made clear to Arnold Clark that they had mis-sold the vehicle and a refund or suitable, like for like replacement is found. It was also requested, in light of the poor customer service from the manager and the fact the vehicle was mis-sold, the service plan is refunded but still honored. Arnold Clark refused this request but did find a similar replacement (had slightly higher miles and was a different colour). Several phone calls and 3 managers later me and my partner have lost faith with Arnold Clark's ability to resolve the issue and requested the vehicle is returned and a full refund is given, not only for the car, but for the service plan and protective layer. We have spoken to our solicitor (free 30 minutes consultation) and to Consumer Rights which have also advised us to request the refund, due to the car being mis-sold. Customer Services are now refusing to deal with the refund and have told us we need to speak to the General Manager (Kenneth) - however he has failed to phone us back and isn't available for us to talk to. Poor customer service. This whole fiasco has taken the joy out of us getting a new car and now Arnold Clark have our money and we are left with a car which invalid/void warranty. !!!!AVOID ARNOLD CLARK at all costs!!!! This won't be the end of this and we will be taking it further.
