Great mountaineering week end with RedLine Guiding! First day was training, reviewing necessary gear, learning to use ice axe and crampons, self arrest, etc. As our guide Ken explained the content of his backpack, you could tell he was more than prepared to handle safely any situation, and explained in detail everything. RedLine was able to provide us all the necessary gear (very high quality). Second day was Mount Washington with two guides : Ken and Ryan. Their great experience on the mountain could be felt in all the small decisions that add up to make the hike very nice and safe. We started at the right hour, with a pace everybody could follow. When we got to the steepest section (Hillary step), they installed an optional fixed rope to serve as a handrail to bolster confidence and safety. Everybody was able to make it through this hard part. Then the two guides perfectly handled an uneasy situation where one of us was to tired to summit. walking with a steady pace and anticipating any problem (winds, layers, ...) Ryan led us to the summit and back. We were again carefully guided on the way down, and finished with headlamps on easy trail. It was a very good experience. Amazing day! Very responsive to questions before the hike, planning appropriate gear and checking weather conditions. My guide shared a ton of additional information and answered even more questions I had about hiking more of the 48 4Ks in the future on my own. Guides are a wealth of experience and knowledge. She also pointed out many different plants and other interesting things along the way. Great conversation, if you like to chat. If not, that's ok too. Pace was good for me as I'm a slower hiker. Checked on me to make sure I was hydrated and feeling good. I felt very safe. I had wanted to hike both Pierce and Eisenhower on this hike, if possible based on time and my ability. When we got to top of Pierce and had lunch we reviewed how much time it would take and calculated when we'd be back to car based on my ability and how I was feeling. We did it! Time was absolutely perfect! We even had time to see a beautiful waterfall a little bit off trail on the way down. I can't say enough great things about this experience. I'm already signed up again to hike Mount Washington in the future. In the meantime I feel more confident and better prepared to hike more on my own. I contacted Redline Guiding to guide me in my attempt to reach the summit of Mt. Washington during the winter season. I spoke with Mike Cherim over the phone and went on the mountain with Ken Hodges. I met both of them on the day before heading out. They did a great job advising me on choice of gear (I brought my own, even though they have all the gear available). Also, the route that was chosen was exactly what I was hoping for. Great views, consistent and direct. The hike itself was nothing short of great. It felt like hiking with a friend, not with an instructor. Ken was even willing to extend the round trip past the sunset (after confirming that I had a headlamp). I am going to try for the summit again next winter season, and so far Ken was extremely helpful in answering my questions from his experience as to how I should prepare, physically, or gear-wise. And the follow-up with pictures that I received by e-mail a few days after was a great touch, I did not expect it and was very pleasantly surprised. If you're looking for something memorable to do in the Conway area besides driving up Mount Washington, this should be it! My father and I took the all-day wilderness navigation course with Mike and had a blast. After a short introductory activity where we learned how to use a compass, we spent a couple hours learning how to read a map, set a course to wherever you want, including isolated peaks that have no official hiking trails. I would definitely recommend the full day course because in the afternoon we took our new skills outside and bushwacked through the woods at one of the local parks. It felt great to go off the beaten path, literally, and feel equipped to navigate back to it in an emergency. Mike was a great guide; he was funny, knowledgeable, and patient. He really wanted everyone to understood the concepts before they left and invited anyone to call, email, or text him if they ever felt they forgot anything we learned. There are quite a few things that I wanted to accomplish before I was too old to get them done, and one was to traverse the Presidentials in one day, running what was runnable, power-hiking the rest. My wife wisely did not want me to do it alone, so I contacted Redline and they provided the right person for the task. My experience running the FKT course of the Presidentials with a Redline guide was all that I had hoped for. It did take us a while to complete the traverse, which was just fine as I am injury-free and totally happy with how everything went, just a month shy of my 70th birthday. I had such an amazing experience with Redline Guiding. Although I thought I was in decent shape, I quickly realized that climbing the White Mountains was no joke! If you're interested in winter mountaineering and being prepared to summit a peak, I highly recommend Redline Guiding. If you're physically fit enough I recommend the full day course followed by the summit. I now feel confident that I can properly use crampons and an ice axe. The number one thing I learned is that it is essential to stay on your feet and proper training and hiking in crampons is highly essential. Thanks to Mike and Ty for my classroom and outdoor training I was ready to summit with Ryan. Ryan was highly qualified and a pleasure to spend the day with. We had challenging conditions but never once did I not feel confident in my guide. I've taken the Wilderness Navigation class, and two fantastic guided hikes in the White Mountains. Each guide was a different person suitable for my needs, requests, with safety a priority and knowledgeable about the area, plants, flowers, and so on. Always professional and a great time! The guide assigned to my hike (Dominic) was awesome! He was able to easily guide me through 2 bushwhacks, a slide, and several water crossings to help me accomplish my goal of hiking all of NH's peaks that are over 4K (finished my last peak - Owls Head). We were on the trail together for 9 hours (16 miles), and I felt very comfortable with him the entire time. He was very accommodating to rest/water/refuel stops and pacing. Conversation easily flowed, and it became quite apparent how qualified Dominic is to lead people through the wilderness areas of NH. First time utilising a guide service, although I've taken WFA through Redline, but what a great exposure to (for me) a new sport! I could have fuddled my way through a first-time ski tour in the White Mountains but my guide Dominic took all the guess work out of it and helped me avoid some common mistakes. He even pre-scouted the trip a week ahead to know the terrain & route... An excellent day on snow and I highly recommend Dominic for all things uphill (ie skiing, climbing, ice-climbing). I am deathly afraid of heights, so, of course, hiking the Huntington Ravine Trail became my obsession, my White Whale. I had myself convinced I was not capable of doing it.
