The meat is always EXTREMELY high quality and the pricing is very fair. Its great to have a banter with a real butcher and to be able to have meat cut as you'd like it instead of taking what the supermarkets serve up (pumped full of water) on plastic trays. I commend this business to you.

I love this butchers…read more They've got a great range of meat (lots of it organic or locally sourced) and the guys behind the counter are HEAPS more knowledgeable than me. I could never get the background on a piece of meat they can provide from the guy in a supermarket. The prices are as good as the supermarkets too, and you're supporting a great local business by buying here. Their position next to a bakery and fruit shop / deli also means you can do your daily meal shopping without having to enter a big chain. Oh, and they have cheap dog bones. Love that.

These guys remind me of the butchers of old (yes I'm old to). They open the door for you, genuinely talk with you about.....anything really. Carry your meat to the car (which helps with screaming kids) and always remember who you are. The meat itself is amazing. My partner is a raving hippy so for her it has to be 'organic'. Me, I don't care, as long as its red, dead and juicy I'll eat it. But the different sorts of cuts and marinates really spices up our barbies and makes 'us' look like 5 star chefs! Mmmmm....meeeeeat.

I go past this place everyday on the bus. What originally brought me to Rayner's door was the few…read moretimes I'd spied whole rabbits for sale in the shop window. When I finally went to Rayner's to more thoroughly peruse their goods, I was pleasantly surprised. They've got quail, free range duck ($14.99 kg), duck parts, and other delightful meats on offer. Their sausage selection is also top notch: mint and rosemary and honey macadamia are two recommendations (both $13.99 kg). They also offer gluten free sausages! (enquire about price in store). If you're into your more fancy kind of nosh, they offer pate and the like as well. The service isn't terrific. When I was last in there, it was only myself and another lady ahead of me who were waiting to be served. After a couple of minutes of the lady waiting there, a man came to serve her. It took a lifetime for her to walk out with her goods, and I can't fathom why- her order seemed simple enough. I had been waiting for ten minutes at this point, and I couldn't bring myself to wait any longer in a practically empty butchery, especially when there were two other people out the back talking casually with each other. It's something of an expensive butchers, (a premium rib fillet will cost you $41.99 kg) but it's also a butchery where you can find meats you wouldn't be able to get so easily otherwise. If you're after your usual cuts, then you could probably find cheaper meats elsewhere. However, if you're looking for something a little different, I would make a bee line straight to Rayner's front door.

For me Cutting Edge Meats is what I think a butcher should be. The staff are always friendly and helpful, willing to prepare your meat as you request if they don't have it on display. Our experience of the quality of the meat itself is that it is probably some of the best we've found on the northside of the city and it won't cost you an arm and a leg. In particular the lamb that we've purchased has been exceptional. I quite happily stock up here and feel like I'm getting good value for money and supporting a local business in the process. Cutting Edge Meats does offer a spit rental service too.

But what I saw when I walked in was the childrens drawings on the wall, the certificates of appreciation from local community groups and the butchers greeting customers by name. Give them a few days and they'll do specialty requests (boned turkey saved me a lot of effort) and they are great at making recommendations. If you live in this area you really shouldn't be buying your meat from anywhere else.

I seem to recall that on my last visit to a butcher I was wearing my elementary school uniform and still referring to someone as 'mummy'. However, I still have a little bit of knowledge on the subject and I know for a fact that this particular butchery is big. I can only think of one other in Brisbane that may be larger (Patton's Big Gun in Underwood). The large room is spacious but lined with fridges full of every cut of meat under the sun (or protected from it in air-conditioned comfort). I didn't see any exotic meats, it was mainly variations of pork, chicken and beef, but they came in any shape or form you could possibly want. The room at the back where they prepare and package everything is also visible from the front, which I find somewhat comforting as well as a little gross to look at.

The reason I go to Petersen's is because it makes me feel good to support that business. The shop is awfully quaint, and looks like the kind of place your grandma would have gone to get T bones for your grandpa because they were his special treat. (It's impossible not to get romantic about this store). On a busy day, I'd almost consider it fun to stand in the narrow customer area with every other man and his dog, breathing in that flesh smell, waiting patiently for someone to serve me. It's the atmosphere of this place that gets me more than specialty or novelty items they sell here (anything 'duck' is not ever a problem here). The prices are more than reasonable, and the meats are delicious. The butcher experience is a happy one here.

Ah, how I wish the days of shopping for meat at an actual local butcher could be revived! And it can, if you all shop there. The store is conveniently located on the corner James and Kent Streets in New Farm, and the prices are much better than other places in the area. Plus, the meat is fantastic!
