Every time I pass by Sunnybank Plaza, I'm drawn to the glossy, enticing ducks hanging in the front window. A whole duck is only $40, and the owner will kindly chop it up for you at no extra cost, even including complimentary sauces. The meat is incredibly tender and juicy, with the skin having the perfect crispness--it's incredibly authentic. One duck is enough for two people to enjoy for at least three generous meals, making it the king of value for money! This isn't just a delicious meal; it's the perfect break from the everyday dinner rotation. If you're looking for authentic Asian food, you must not miss the Peking duck from this shop. You will not be disappointed!

For those of you who have never had any of these before, imagine a thick pikelet sandwich with your choice of filling inside. It's toasted, it's hot, the batter is pretty much the same as what you would have if you ordered a crepe... you need to try one. I recommend the custard filled one, the green tea filled one, the chocolate one, the brioche like twists aren't the best, but you should try them anyway. You could easily snack on 3-4 they are so small. The one with peanuts is nice too... they have a million options to choose from so go crazy! If you're feeling a bit adventurous, they also sell cold buck wheat noodle packs... it's something that's very popular in china and asia... it's cold buck wheat noodles with cucumber and some garnish on the sides, with a vinegarette type sauce over the top. It's very appetizing... I haven't tried them here, but they're conveniently packed in the little display unit on the counter.

Clearly, I didn't do enough because a year later, the Garden City franchise shut down and I now have to go to Sunnybank Plaza for my hot cakes. It's well worth the trip though. These sweet battered cakes are piping hot thick pancakes with a variety of fillings inside. I like the taro, red bean or green tea although they do have more adventurous flavours such as coconut and corn. One pancake cost less than $1 and is the perfect afternoon snack. Personally, I think the price is a little cheap given they are actually pretty filling and tasty to boot.

WELCOME Fresh Food Having been brought up on a Chinese diet,…read moremost forms of Asian cooking is second nature to me now. I can't count the number of times I've scoured Brisbane looking for a specific ingredient without which my authentic Thai or Malaysian or Chinese dish would fail. WELCOME Fresh Food is one of my regular suppliers for Asian groceries. For those who are use to shopping at Woolworths or Coles, there are two things you'll notice about Asian grocery stores in general. Firstly, the aisles are not very wide. It wouldn't be unusual for two women with normal sized child-bearing hips to get wedged in an aisle. WELCOME Fresh Food is no exception. There is nothing you can about this. I repeat, there is absolutely NOTHING you can do about this. The only way to deal with it is to learn how to sidle, slip and slide through temporary cracks in the crowd. If you do tend to get claustrophobic, fortunately there are quiet periods - go first thing in the morning or half an hour before shutting. Do not go around midday on a weekend! Secondly, you may notice that the level of cleanliness is not like Woollies or Coles. I'm not saying there are bugs crawling around but sometimes floors are streaked with mud or grocery juices. Things can get slippery so be careful! Also, unturned stock tends to sit on shelves gathering dust. Fortunately, WELCOME Fresh Food is one of the cleanest Asian grocery shops I've been to so hopefully you won't encounter any problems. Finally the range of products at WELCOME Fresh Food is excellent. It's difficult for a general Asian grocery shop to stock everything - that's why there are specialty Asian grocery shops which will focus on Korean or Indian. WELCOME Fresh Food does a decent range of most South East Asian cooking products. I'm singing their praise higher than usual because they helped me out the other week with a purchase of Kombu (seaweed) which I was unable to find at four other Asian grocery stores in Sunnybank. Along with all the usual longer life stuff there's a good sized fresh produce section with vegetables that actually look good, unlike some of the other places where the bok choy falls to one side in protest as soon as you pick it up. One thing I like about this place is that they have more than one check out - I've been in one too many Asian supermarket where I've had to wait for much longer than should be necessary just to buy one item, while I've been stuck behind people buying a week's worth of groceries because there's one measly cash register in the entire place.

Sure they'll have your range of dashi for Japanese cooking or bean vermicelli for Chinese cooking, but I've had difficulties sourcing unusual products. If you're like me, and like your Miso Paste, Chu Ching Yi Ding instant noodies, your pork and beef balls and your vietnamese pork rolls, this is one of the places to get them. Whilst a little cramped inside, don't bring your babies by the way, they manage to stock a lot of stuff in the lots of shelves they have put in this space. There isn't much space to move on a busy weekend day, but it's fun I've got to admit. Navigating my way around the fully packed aisles looking for that special ingredient for my pho noodle soup or my pork adobo... I can usually find it. They also have cheap fruit and chinese vegies in the front by the cashier counters as well. The staff are always very friendly and although you can't get everything here, it's a great place to start your asian culinary adventure.
