For me Cutting Edge Meats is what I think a butcher should be. The staff are always friendly and helpful, willing to prepare your meat as you request if they don't have it on display. Our experience of the quality of the meat itself is that it is probably some of the best we've found on the northside of the city and it won't cost you an arm and a leg. In particular the lamb that we've purchased has been exceptional. I quite happily stock up here and feel like I'm getting good value for money and supporting a local business in the process. Don't overcook it he said... as he pulled me aside and took me through a step by step. Much appreciated... although I did end up undercooking the piece of meat having underestimated the weight... or in my case... guestimated. I always appreciate butchers who don't feel the need to put glad wrap over all their meat because of flies or whatever reason they want to give... it just gives the impression the meat isn't fresh and no one has bought anything. These guys have the freshest reddest (not fake red, real fresh red!) meat on the market here. The prices are really good too and if you've had a hard day wheeling 2 young screaming kids around, these guys may even 'accidentally' throw in a spare crumbed lamb cutlet... because one looked kinda small. So generous in their nature, boisterous when called for, these guys know their meat and are proud to share the good meat knowledge. Will be back!

They've got celebratory signage and flashy highlighting over the meats which are from Kilcoy (4 hours away). This was the first thing to get my vote. If you're looking for something a little more unique, they offer a mean cranberry/apple/pistachio pork mini roast for $16.99. The macadamia satay chicken wings for $3.99 also get the tick of approval. The service is very laid back and friendly, and it's just one of those places where you really get a kick out of supporting a local family that supports local industry.

If I want quality cuts of meat, Billy's is where I make a beeline for. Last week was no exception when I wanted to buy a few of the Italian Sausages that I'd discovered were what Merriweather Cafe use in their breakfast baguette. Unfortunately, they were sold out when I arrived but that didn't stop me leaving with bacon, Canadian Maple pork sausages and a leg of pork to slow roast. There's plenty of condiments to consider as well and you'll rarely leave empty handed. The lads behind the counter are friendly, helpful and, using a fan dangled pulley-system contraption, will even open the door for you as you leave. And yes, it is slightly more pricey than what you might buy in the supermarket but I feel it is worth it for the higher quality of produce. It isn't often I crave meats of any kind but if I do, I want it to be good.

They know where the meat came from (which is important to environmentalists and animal lovers like me) and they can take you through the different cuts and best cooking methods for each. Like all awesome butchers they also have dog bones for sale, and are not above slipping a little extra in the package for a particularly personable puppy. You will pay a little more than at the supermarket, but the taste difference is astronomical and well worth the expense.

Although I don't eat meat very often, my husband and daughter love it so I cook it for them. I don't really buy it anywhere else because I know that the produce sold at the Meat-ing place is in its most natural form, free of growth hormones and other nasties. All of the gourmet sausages and small goods (including bacon) are free from preservatives, gluten, HVP and nitrate. Typical Aussies, my children love the rissoles and the beef sausages. I feel good knowing that the money I am spending is helping out our local farmers and that I am buying quality meat that is full of flavour and free from artificial (and dangerous) additives - just like the olden days.
