Cool old school hamburger/hotdog stand with an awesome burger. No frills...bring cash. I am a huge fan of the double cheeseburger "chicago style." I often eat out under the train and people watch. Fries are also top notch...fresh cut and reminiscent of Al's on Taylor street (which is high praise from a life long Chicagoan). Highly recommended. I got their chicken tenders with fries. I had a cheese to the fries and it was a pretty substantial amount. I could not finish everything. Service was great. Best fried shrimp in the city! They have Chicago-style hotdogs and burgers and really good hand cut French fries, but their shrimp is awesome! Big, with no tails, and just the right amount of breading, fried to golden brown perfection. This is a little hole in the wall on the north side of the city on Western (near Fullerton) with standing room only and they only take cash. (They have an ATM and a few picnic tables in front.) They have a parking lot and they're open til 4 am during the week and 5 am on Fridays and Saturdays. If you like fried shrimp, you must give them a try. read more

This whole in the wall staple of Chicago is incredibly unassuming from the outside. I've ordered a double cheese burger and fries to go and was not disappointed. For those who've had Jim's original hot dogs, this place is very similar but in my opinion, has better burgers. I'm not a huge fan of their fries as they aren't crispy and light like I enjoy but no complaints on the main burger. Definitely a must try for late night eats in the city. read more

Very good fast food. I hadn't realized that they moved from their original location and thought that it was a new restaurant that popped up. I had never gone to their original location but from what I have heard from family/friends that had gone, the food is just good or even better. They don't have inside seating but they did have picnic tables outside when it was still nice out - the downside is that it's under the train tracks. I see the same complaints about Harold's. It's called double frying. The fresh cut fries are intentionally dropped twice. (I admit they occasionally skip this step when the line is out the door filled with hungry boozy patrons, lol.) - If you're enjoying a wild night out on the town and then decide to break your organic-gluten-free-vegetarian diet at 3am with a deliciously greasy bag of umptuousness. .. your tummy might not like you anymore. It DOES NOT mean you have food poisoning. That's a very specific illness cause by bacteria. Sometimes certain foods just don't agree with your body, especially greasy food on the late night. I hate to even mention that term in a review, but food poisoning is wildly overused on Yelp. Just like "hidden gem" OR "I really wanted to like this place, but. .." OR "this is better than Au Cheval" OR "I wish I could give this place zero stars". Phew, now that I got that off my chest. .. As far as short-order burgers go, this is my favorite. The fries are pretty good too. I think they may be fried in beef tallow. Splurge and pay the 50 cents for an extra slice of cheese. Fantastic burger and fries. Candidly, perhaps the best burger I have ever had and I have had quite a few. One thing that struck me as especially exceptional was how warm both the burger and fries were. Of course, would appreciate slightly more ambiance; i.e. sit down indoor seating, etc. and I am not a Pepsi product fan but these are minor compared to the over-all and over-whelming quality. Red Hot Ranch is a cash only, no frills, late night fast food joint located right near the McDonalds at Western/Milwaukee/Armitage. There is an ATM located inside. I walked in around 5:30pm and there wasn't a line. I ordered the Red Hot Ranch Double Burger and Fries, which was $7 after tax. It took them about 5 mins to make my order so very fast! This was probably the best $7 I have ever spent! The burger was crispy like a smash burger, toppings were fresh, and the cheese was melted to perfection. The fries were very very good as well and they gave you a ton of them! Yes, I can confirm that Red Hot Ranch has one of the best burgers in Chicago! You will end up with a mountain of them. The fries are more of the soft kind with no crisp. I'd suggest buying some extra sauce on the side. Maybe it was the drunchies but the Chicago dog I ordered really hit the spot. Better than portillos for sure. I'm sorry if I offended anyone by making this comparison. The red hot ranch burger with cheese was decent as well but not as good as the Chicago dog imo. When I am in the mood for some greasy good fast food, I go to Red Hot Ranch and when I want to eat healthy I step down a few doors to Suffron Cafe! Their fries remind me of Jimmy's hot dogs which is way out west, and it's a lot safer in this neighborhood. Always get my fries with a side of cheese.. service is no longer than 6 minutes. Nice outdoor seating but you may need some earplugs because every 15 minutes there's a loud train just above the outdoor seating. read more

In my personal opinion, it is rather difficult for a place to really do fries well. Often they are soggy, undercooked, overcooked, or the salt is all messed up. Now I'm not going to say that these are the best fries in Chicago, but these are up there with the best of 'em. And the shrimp: very, very good. This is my favorite burger in the city, and is the best burger bang for your buck. Red Hot Ranch (RHR) is famous for their $7.25 double cheese burger meal which includes two flavorful beef patties smashed to crispy perfection, lettuce, onion, mayo, and special sauce. The fries are fresh cut, delicious, and crispy. Fountain drinks are $2.25, and ear plugs are free if you are sensitive to the noise of the CTA blue line that passes directly above the shop. The CTA line presents a vibe of its own, especially considering that the outside seating is byob/420 friendly. There is a counter for indoor eating during the cold weather season. RHR isn't quite on the same level as my other favorite Chicago burger spots like Au Cheval, Gretel, or the Loyalist; however, it's not as expensive either so I frequent RHR a lot more often. If you want to treat yourself with a great burger without spending the $100 that you would at the aforementioned burger spots, then I highly recommend checking out the Red Hot Ranch. read more

Very disappointed with this new location, which is upsetting because I liked Red Hot Ranch. I have visited several times and each time my very small orders have been incorrect or were missing items. I have always tipped, been polite, and not mentioned the mistakes until today. When I called in and explained the errors, I was told that I could come in for a replacement, which is what I expected. This is hands down one of my favorite burgers in the city. It's super affordable but the only thing is that they are cash only.

I stopped into this restaurant after seeing it show on Apple Maps. It states "credit and debit cards accepted" but when walking in there is a sign that states cash only. Trying to gain clarity I politely asked the staff "are you guys still cash only" to which I received a very snotty and rude toned response from one of the workers "it says it right there". If this sets the tone for service I wouldn't go back here even if I did have cash with me. read more
