We were considering Redeemer for our 2 children and thought the school seemed like it had a strong community and curriculum. My wife was raised Lutheran and was looking for a church in Austin to become part of and to teach our kids about her religion (we are an interfaith family, I am Jewish). We did a tour with Beth Knippa and sent our oldest for a shadow day after submitting an application. My child had an OK experience but said "other kids couldn't follow directions" (we were also told by faculty on pick up that my child followed directions and participated better than current students). We later got an e-mail from Beth asking how it went which I responded to positively and a short follow up later saying Redeemer "was not the proper learning environment for them". After the feedback we'd received so far this was surprising so we e-mailed Beth to ask if she could provide more context on their decision. She adamantly refused to provide any additional information (after my child had spent the entire day there and my wife did a follow up meet and greet with my younger child). Overall, it seems like interfaith families are out for the school - of course they couldn't cite that specifically (even if you're actively looking for a church community and 1/2 raised in the faith). Typically I wouldn't post an online review but both my wife and I were appalled by the lack of transparency in their decision which leads us to believe a lack of openness in the community to families from different backgrounds. We're still considering churches/a school that are the best fit for our kids and in hindsight are relieved that Redeemer made their true colors known early. It's certainly not the welcoming Christian community we'd hoped for. read more

My son thrives on the love and personal attention he's received since he started attending PK2 more than two years ago. Being the parents of an only child, my husband and I were unfamiliar with how little idiosyncrasies in his behavior were of some concern on a larger scale. We just thought his younger age was the reason. At the end of the spring semester, both his PK2 teacher and school director, Amber, brought it to our attention with the utmost respect and love. Upon returning for his PK3 year, his new teacher and Amber addressed it again with the same respect and care saying that he may benefit from further evaluation from his pediatrician. Speaking from personal experience, this was THE BIGGEST BLESSING we could have received for our child. We saw his pedi, followed up with more professionals, and he has improved drastically in less than a year and a half. We want what's best for our son, and it is so apparently clear the loving staff at this school sincerely wants what's best for him and every child there. I find the teachers very approachable, Amber is always around for a conversation with little ones and parents and her door remains open all day (unless she's in a very rare personal conference, like the ones we had about our son's social development), and they have been the best at improvising given the Covid19 quarantine. They are sending daily pre-recorded lessons from his teachers for my kiddo (can't get enough of his music class or storytime!), and they gave us the option to withdraw while still holding our place for semesters for which we've already registered. A rumored claim I'd like to clarify from a reliable authority on the issue is that teachers were given the option to stay home during the outbreak while maintaining employee status and their health insurance. Given all the options some workers face at this time, staying home unpaid, while keeping health insurance, is better than being unemployed. It reassures me that the administration's loyalty to the teaching staff is of utmost importance for the social and emotional wellbeing in the young students who rely upon that stability. I recommend this school to everyone with room in their hearts for God's message. The preschool alone lays such a balanced foundation of faith, love, and service to others. They have been a cornerstone in our son's social, emotional, physical, and faith-based development. read more

It's been such a great transition to middle school, here at Redeemer! As a former public school middle school teacher, I know that the good ones are a special breed - able to relate to, guide, teach, discipline, and have fun with kiddos of this wonky age, all at the same time. Teachers here at Redeemer's middle school definitely fit that bill, and are such a gift to our kids and families. We just started at Redeemer this past year, and have enjoyed the experience as a whole. We are pleased with our teachers showing kindness to students, yet holding them accountable. We felt at home the moment we first met with Mr. Geyer (head of school) as we were coming in as a new family in elementary school. The front office staff, nurses, specials teachers, counselor, and principals are available when needed with answers to any questions. They have so many opportunities for kids (STEM, Art, Choir, PE, Music, Library, Recess and fun field trips) and make all levels of sportsmanship welcome. They have fun ways to get kids excited to learn (especially with math and reading) and integrate technology appropriately. The performances the kids participate in show the dedication and love the staff put into this program. We are grateful for Redeemer and happy to be part of the family. He tests above grade level and while once considered shy, he was just elected community leader of his sixth grade class. Redeemer is an excellent school to develop your child. Our children are on their second year here at Redeemer and we couldn't be happier. The teachers are amazing in getting the kids motivated and they always challenge them to do better and more. Books in a bag is a big hit with our kids and the reason why they love reading so much. If your child has difficulty with reading, they will provide Reading intervention (K-2). Math and Science are hands-on and they works! The kids' handwriting is another thing that I want to mention. We have had family and friends that commented that their handwriting is so neat, such a night and day compare to 2 years ago when they first came here. They are introducing Project Based Learning (PBL) this year and I couldn't wait for them to get involved. The Christ centered method of teaching has shaped them into kindhearted children but yet they are being prepared to face the 21st century challenges. Technology is abundant within Redeemer but yet being active outdoor is as important. They have awesome age-appropriate playground, the latest one where they built obstacles for aspiring little ninjas. Plenty after school enrichment programs if you are interested in that, mad science, scout, music lessons etc. Overall I would recommend for you to consider/visit Redeemer when you are researching elementary/middle private schools. Was a great experience until about 3rd grade. Lots of homework, sometimes over 1.5 hours and 4-5 tests a week sometimes. Punishment can include running laps (for not turning in church attendance) or doing push ups for not paying attention in Math. Lots of sin and Satan this year which was not great for a kid with anxiety. My child is a great student and does not get disciplined (2 laps in two years) but it was upsetting for her to see other kids treated this way. Spoke to administration (first time in six years) and went on deaf years. Pulling our child out in January. I do not recommend sending your child her past 2nd grade. read more

The kids really enjoy themselves and the teachers have been at that location for a generation. Redeemer is the best private school in Austin!!! I went to Redeemer School 5th-8th grade after going to public school before, and the difference in the education and community is amazing. We came to Redeemer in 2012... All three of our children attend and it is 'home'. The teachers care and engage the children. They are focused on a Christ centered life application way of teaching. Chapel every week and I love the Chambers! They are a gem in the faculty that the middle schoolers love. The updated technology and play scapes are wonderful... Great schoo!There is not like in a previous review stated 5 tests in a week this is just false. Home work in our home takes about 30 min. This is a Christian school so sin and yes the topic of evil does come up at an appropriate age but Jesus love is always stressed more according to my child. My child is in 6 th grade and I am continually impressed with the love and care these teachers and administrators have for the kids .They go above and beyond for the kids.When My child was ill and was absent for an extended time the teachers took additional time to help her get caught up and make sure she was not overwhelmed.I have never heard of running laps for church attendance not being turned in as the teachers are not the ones that keep track of that .this is a positive and loving school and My child loves Redeemer!! read more

If your child is not completely compliant, avoid enrolling in Redeemer Lutheran. Our son was at Redeemer for almost six weeks, and it turned out to be an unpleasant, stressful experience. His teacher claimed to have a "heart for children" but she did not seem to feel this way about our son. She was very hard on him, and he became so stressed and distraught that he couldn't do anything right. When some school work came home to us with notes from the teacher saying he wasn't coloring in the lines, we knew Redeemer was an unhealthy environment for him and us. In trying to wrap our heads around Redeemer's culture and environment, we found out from very reliable sources that there seems to be a pattern of asking and encouraging kids who do not follow their militant, "mission field" ways to leave the school. In addition, there are a number of family members who work together at Redeemer. At first we thought this was great. But we began to wonder if this led to favoritism and some of the chilliness we felt by the end of our "tour" at Redeemer. We are happy to report that there are other wonderful schools out there...our sweet son is in a great school now and is happy, healthy and thriving as he should be. read more

Both of our kids attended Redeemer Pre-K thru 8th grade. We could not have asked for a better experience all the way through the school. The teachers, administration and staff are caring and encouraging, help students grow spiritually, academically, and socially. Our son had a speech issue when he was in preschool. Being first time parents, we did not realize if this was something that would fix itself over time or not. The preschool staff was great at walking us through why we needed to get him tested and start in speech therapy sooner than later for his benefit. Both of our kids were reading delayed and the lower elementary staff helped us to develop a plan to get both of them back on the right reading levels. Through both of these situations, we felt like our kids and our family were cared for and that the best interest of our children were at the forefront. Throughout elementary and middle school, we saw our kids grow by leaps and bounds in their confidence of who God designed them to be socially, spiritually and academically. Both of our kids have fond memories of their time at Redeemer, from athletics, to chapels, musicals, field trips, class parties, and academics. The foundation that they received at Redeemer set them up for their success in high school and college. I would highly recommend anyone looking for a quality Christian education for their child(ren) to take a serious look at Redeemer. Is it a perfect place, no, but they work hard on treating everyone like family and practice Loving Jesus, Loving Learning, and Loving Others. Parent with 2 at Redeemer. Administration , particularly the Principal and the "Board" run the school based on the opinion of a few select Redeemer families. Nepotism runs amok and the same families run school policy catering only to their whims and not the majority. Beware of the Board! ! Illogical School policy runs rampant here and the principal is ineffective when it comes to disagreements between parents and administrative policy and simply repeats the mantra "it's a Board rule..." . Keischnick is ineffective in this cpacity ,buying his time until retirement. It's true , they allowed a BOARD MEMBER to be hired as "school Nurse" despite the fact that she was unlicensed and unregistered to practice .She impersonated an RN for the entire school year of 2009-2010 and was hired over a music teacher because she needed a job despite her lack of legal credentials to practicing nursing. Instead of acknowledging that they made a mistake by hiring an unqualified, unlicensed person to practice medicine on our children, they persecuted the parents that pointed it out. Administration appear to be "good Christians" in the halls but behind closed doors they protect their Board members and throw the rest of us under the bus without so much as a passing "God Bless You." They have lost countless wonderful people to other schools and churches because of this type of behavior that just continues on and on. read more

I have two children there now and a third on his way. I feel very comfortable having them there and keeping them there all the way through the 8th grade. The teachers are well trained and very expierenced with many of them having been there for dozens of years. The diversity of the programs and the quality of the education make this a home run for me over most of the private schools around town and especially over the public option. Parents may be interested in any number of positive aspects about Redeemer. The teachers care about their students and are there because they believe in the mission of the school. It is gratifying that they are partners in our children's upbringing. The school has testing (ITBS) but it is not implemented in a high-stakes fashion, more as a measure of progress. Additionally, there is an intentional awareness of all the needs of a child's growth, from play, to music, to exercise, to theater, to sports, to academics, and above all to personal development. The small community which extends K-8 was a good choice for our family, since large middle schools felt pretty daunting for our kids. read more

They could not handle two days with my kids and had the nerve to tell me my 4 year old was behind. Um, had testing done and his IQ is above average and qualified him for gifted and talented. Next time, be honest, you can't handle them that is fine, but don't provide input based on 3 days of being around my son. read more

I can't say enough about Redeemer - it's been the biggest blessing in our lives since moving to Austin. The teachers are wonderful, the campus is great, and even the administrators are top notch.
