And the MoCa Bar is a nice pub indeed: It offers quite a healthy selection of hand-pumped real ales from many different small breweries (rotating), and it's centrally located. However, it is the only place in Cheddleton apart from the One Stop that sells alcohol so that's not surprising. It is conveniently located on the main road, with parking available to the side, so easy to access. it has the usual range of wines, beer, spirits, soft drinks and sweets and chocolates, and the service is quite friendly for the type of shop - probably because it is in a village location. All in all, it does exactly what is says on the tin - sells booze at bargain prices!

If it's not The White Swan, it's The Black Swan. If it's not that, it's The Wellington. And then of course, The Prince Regent. Why is it never The Flat-Breasted Floozie? ;) Anyway, this one The White Swan is a very likeable, friendly real ale pub next to that odd "crooked-spire" church in Chesterfield. Positive proof that good real ale pubs do not have to be grubby and grimy, as CAMRA sometimes wants us to believe. The selection of hand-pumped ales is certainly more than decent, about 10 available when I visited in February of 2015, whiling the afternoon away following a trip to Bolsover Castle. Staff know their ales, and are very friendly, if maybe a tad hipster-ish. But they'll warm up to you more after the second pint. You will warm up to them, too. Literally and figuratively. If you're a real ale fan, this is the place to go in Chesterfield. It's about a 7-10 minute walk from the station (which itself is not in the city centre - this pub is).

She quickly gripped onto my arm, started charging me up the road, rammed a tenner into my hand, led me to bargain booze and demanded I buy her some vodka. So I did. And somehow I ended up back at her house which had no carpet, just a sea of letters and bills and newspapers and general crap. Anyway, I didn't get ID'd and the vodka was cheap. The end.

As the name suggests, it has an extensive cellar and it takes as long (if not indeed much longer) to choose the wine as it does to choose the meal. The owner is very knowledgable and friendly, making the choice a little easier. Upstairs there is a sitting room where you can take your drink while you wait for your table, so getting there a bit early is no problem. It also has a large whisky shop up there with the finest assortment of malts (and the odd brandy) this side of... ummm... Oh I dunno, somewhere that sells a lot of whisky. This isn't the usual supermarket chioce either. While you'll find a few bottles that you would recognise off the shelves of your local CostLo, the range at La Zouch is more what you would expect from a good whisky shop and contains some pretty fine drams. It's not as extensive as some I have been in, but it's probably similar to the whisky shop in York, for example. Back down in the restaurant, the food is well cooked and well presented. I've been a few times and have yet to have anything to complain about. The service is always pleasant and the price is pretty reasonable. My only gripe with this place, and the reason it hasn't hit the dizzy heights of 5 stars, is that they never seem to change the menu. I must admit I haven't been for a while now, but the a La Carte menu is still the same now as it was 4 years ago when I first went. If you happen to be visiting the bustling busy business district of Ashby de la Zouch and fancy a power lunch with some high flying clients, then La Zouch is a great place to visit, although you'll soon get bored of the food choice, which, considering the baffling choice of drinks, lets this place down.
