The Red Well is a fairly typical JD Wetherspoon pub, you know what you're going to get, it's fine and it's very good value, if nothing to write about.
So for the past two years, every Thursday for their 'Curry Night' a friend and I have been going there, once a week for one of their very good value curry meals. A decent range of mostly tasty curries, with sides of mango chutney, popadoms and naan bread, served with a drink from a good range too.
Most of the time the ales are drinkable, despite claims of superior ability with regards to real ales, I doubt they'd win any awards for the range nor the way they keep them - but still drinkable all the same.
So why suddenly write now?
Last night we were served a meal that potentially was uncooked. It was certainly cold and when pointing this out to the manager, a tirade of abuse about us easting "half" of the meal (he later conceded that we'd had one mouthful after making him fetch the dishes from the kitchen) and that that he only had our word for the fact that it was cold! Although quite what we'd have to gain by lying about something like that I do not know.
There was no apology and only an offer of "reheating" our meals was made. Pointing out that no-one had apologised for the problem, he then got personally offensive, saying that I was "too bone idle" to listen to him apologise. We demanded a refund, and left and enjoyed a similarly priced meal, with people that smile at their customers rather than shout at them, just around the corner from this pub.
Calling their Customer Service department this morning, they were similarly disinterested in the fact they'd served a meal that was stone cold - so I guess we'll not be going to this place, nor any other Weatherspoons again, in case next time I get food poisoning! read more
