The owner of RED, Scott, has been my stylist since 1994. What more do I need to say, other than he is simply the best!!!!!

The salon was clean and staff very friendly and supportive of one another. No annoying gossip or drama that I have experienced in other salons. My stylist's name was Tamara and she spent over an hour and 15 minutes perfecting my cut and it looks aMaZing. I'm so happy with this experience. I have definitely found my salon! Initially I was a bit confused at the entrance. The door said it was to the salon but it appeared to be a clothing shop. Upon entry, you need to navigate down the corridor to the rear and up a flight of stairs. The shop has a huge exhaust system that pulls out the fumes from hair styling chemicals. This made me me feel good that the employer cares about their staff who would otherwise be exposed to these harmful fumes all day. I definitely LoVe this salon. read more

Love this salon! I've been seeing Sara once every 4-6 weeks over 6 years now, and she is legit one of the best (if not the best) colorists I've ever met! I've gone from almost black to fully blond at least twice now and almost every shade of dark-medium-light brown in between (I'm a bit of a color fanatic) and she has somehow magically kept my fine textured hair shiny and healthy through all of the damage and torture I've put it through :) She has an amazing eye for color and she really listens to what you want and makes your vision a reality in a way that works for you and your hair. I have this thing with hair. I used to be a hair model - from LA to NYC and a few places in between. Basically, I was a glorified monkey who let people cut, dye, style, blow out and updo my hair - sometimes for paid hair shows and other times just because, you know, a gal needs a free haircut. I also liked the surprise factor of never knowing what I was going to get. My haircuts were always amazing, however, as I had the best stylists working their magic on me. So, when I pay to get my hair done, I can be picky. I flew into Detroit needing a quick clean up for my brother's wedding and Red the Salon in Birmingham was able to accommodate me on short notice. Upon arriving, I was told my stylist, Monica, was running a wee bit late. Red the Salon apologized for the inconvenience, gave me a complimentary treatment and some hair products. When Monica arrived, she chatted with me about my hair - what my lifestyle is like, if I use products, a hair dryer etc - and what I would like. Monica then got to cutting. The cut was totally spot on, fun and easy to manage! I would have given the salon 5 stars, but I was hoping for a little more quiet. Red the Salon was extremely busy and a little cramped, but a great salon regardless. I will definitely pop in again for a trim or cut next time I am home in Detroit! read more

Overall great place. After 25 years of getting my hair cut- colored , and highlighted with one particular stylist, today, I was finally able to put 2 and 2 together, which I don't have time to explain now, however, when trying to make a hair appointment , I found out that I was red flagged. I was told that I was a no show, two months ago, which stylist blocked off for me (4 hrs.) and of course stylist lost out on a lot of money, and I can understand she'd be pissed, however, I can only say that I either did not have an appointment, or I cancelled, which, I have done, and it was not entered into the system, or whatever. In 25 years of going to the this stylist, I had NEVER not shown up, who does that?? I would never just not show up. I don't know what happened, but, automatically, I was to blame. The ending was not good. Stylist had her assistant tell me that if there were any cancellation's on Saturday 's, moving forward, they would give me a call, REALLY!? -as if I would be on call ????? I am just hurt. that this stylist could actually think I would do that, and she would not talk to me herself, as we are both adults, and I wanted to also tell her- personally,- that, If she chose to do my hair again, I would never return, anyway, particularly to anyone who treated me so disrespectfully. I really would have thought she would have been able to give me the benefit of the doubt, or at least talk to me herself. Didn't have to be today, as I am very cognizant of how busy she is on the weekend. I was even willing to pay for what she would have made in tips. I wasn't able to express that, as the stylist's assistant's voice, got an irritated tone to It, and I just couldn't stand it any longer. The assistant stated she called me several times and left voice mails. THAT IS NOT TRUE. I did not receive ONE SINGLE VOICEMAIL Maybe she wasn't telling the truth?? Plus -I have REDS phone number in my contacts, so it would have shown up as RED, and I totally would have answered it. Assistant stated she called my phone 4 times and left 4 voicemails. Again, I am pained, and terribly disappointed with this stylist. She didn't have to call me today, she could have called me any day. Through all of this, I thought about it long and hard, and I really felt that both the assistant and the stylist came off very snobbish. I can only give poor reviews to whomever asks me about Red, and the stylist, who I will refer to by name. Very nice staff, however. So unfortunate, and incredibly sad that after 25 years she wouldn't even tell me herself. read more

Sara, is a color master and not half bad with the scissors. Awesome to chat with and the only Detroiter I will allow to touch my hair. I have referred several people to her and they all love her. At Red they give nice scalp messages, plus she does not oversell the products. The cons; atmosphere is a little too trendy for me and the price is crazy but most stylist are - and she is worth it. read more

in my first review i gave this salon only three stars based on the color job that i have received. I found out recently through my best friend who also colors my hair that i told the stylist the wrong color. My mistake. I first found RED while living in Ann Arbor. I had exhausted every salon within a 30" drive and then finally read a review about RED and the owner, Scott, who also had a salon in NYC at the time (I used to live in NY and was thrilled to find someone who spoke my language). Scott was great and then I went with another operator whose schedule was loser (he's since gone so I won't mention his name) and now Shelley does my hair. Shelley is AMAZING with blondes! She's young and she keeps me fresh. I've since moved 2 hrs. from Birmingham and still make the trip back (okay, I love the shops in Birmingham, too) regularly. I would not choose to trust anyone else with my color or style. I love the lively, fun, noisy atmosphere there; it's an "experience" not just a hair appointment! read more

I'm hooked on the Keratin treatment here. It's makes me hair soft, shiny, healthy, silky... And it's worth every cent of the $300+ it costs me. I justify this by thinking of my return on investment. It takes me 15 minutes to dry my hair, not an hour. And I no longer have to fear the weather person uttering that nasty H word (humidity!). The employees are friendly enough, and the salon itself is pretty standard. I awarded the 4th star based on the system they have that sucks the fumes from the Keratin treatment outside. It's way easier on my eyes, and lungs. read more

I always enjoy going here every few months to get my hair done. It is a well run professional business. Contemporary look and studious. Moderatly large about 20 stylist on hand. My stylist is a girl named Nicole. She is great and is always full of ideas and can create a good image to someone, very nice and friendly. Everyone there is friendly and dresses really fashionable and funky. Most of clientele Im guessing is from Birmingham. People can bring there cute dogs in. The owner is some type of European and has a cool style about him and has this crazy big dog that doesnt even look much like one lol. I would reccomend anyone this place if you want a great image. Pretty pricey I usually walk out with a 150 bill with tip. Image is a big thing and I go for what makes me feel like a million bucks. And they do a good job at getting it done right. There is a facial body spa downstairs and they are also great. If you want your eyebrows done right. Go there. They also have pilates in the same building. read more

First time visit with owner, Scott for haircut. While he did take the time to talk with me, I ended up walking out with the worst haircut in my life. It was so awful, I had to seek out another hairstylist just days after to fix the hack job which meant cutting my hair shorter than I wanted. It will take months for the uneven spots to grow in. I have naturally wavy/curly hair so I struggle to find a stylist who understands the challenges with this type of hair. Looks like I'll have to keep looking. read more

The talent and service at this salon is top notch, however it is so loud that I'm exhausted from shouting when I leave and the fluorescent lights are so harsh on the skin that it's actually painful to look at yourself in the mirror there. No one wants to feel bad about themselves when they're getting their hair done, and how the management of this salon continues to miss this basic yet critical point is beyond me. read more

If you want a cut that lasts for months and lays perfectly go see Nathan. He is a superstar!! He's professional, friendly and he knows hair. He has figured out how my hair grows, how it lays best, and what is most flattering on me. I am never nervous to completely change my style when he is doing the cutting! I appreciate that when he cuts my hair he tells me exactly what he's doing and even gives me tips on drying and styling. Although he has given me ideas about coloring over the years he is never pushy. I have tried switching to another salon simply for a better price but I am always disappointed and return to Nathan....he is so worth it! I've never gotten a haircut here, but Jessica did mine and my sister's hair during my sister's wedding and engagement parties. We LOVE her. Not only is she fantastic and creative, she is a pleasure to be around, and very accommodating and calm. That is incredibly important when you are stressed for a wedding or big event. I see Stefanie for my haircut and color and she is WONDERFUL! She is very professional and her personality is so sweet and she is just an overall nice person to chat with while getting your hair done. I have long dark brown hair and Stefanie did a color correction for me because my previous stylist could not get it done the way I wanted it. My hair was damaged due to my color appointment with my previous stylist which I explained to Stefanie. She fixed my split ends with an awesome trim/cut without chopping all of my length off and corrected my color perfectly! It has been almost 3 months since I have seen her last and my color is still vibrant/shiny and lasting beautifully. I referred my best friend to her who is a blonde with short hair and she absolutely loved her results as well! I have been going here forYEARS. But this last time was the last straw. I have probably waited a good 2 years of my life waiting for my hair to grow back from when a red employee cut it short after I specifically ask them not to. (No exaggeration) I don't pay $40 a cut to get what the hairdresser thinks is sweet. I pay it so they f****** listen to what I want my hair like and do it. This last time she even told me that she didn't want to do the kit I wanted because it was a girls cut and wasn't masculine enough. The buzz cut I ended up walking out with could have easily been done for free by one of my roommates. Don't get me wrong they do some great cuts and all in all have very talented people who are far better than other salons. But I would still say listening to the cusomer regardless of what you feel will look best would still be #1 in my book. I would rather not like my cut because of what I told you to do than you convincing me and still end up hating it. read more
