I had ordered a scheduled pickup an hour in advance. I got there on time and found out it was a 30 minute extra wait. I was never told where I was able to sit down and wait. During the 30 minutes I was asked to prepay and pretip and my name 4 times but was never offered any water nor updated on the status of my order. Pretty awful when you spend over $100 and they can't even offer you water. Hope the owner has a conversation with their staff about service. Wish I could refund my tip. Oh and the cherry on top? We even found plastic stickers still stuck to their produce in our meals. read more

Have to confess, we got take out from Red Star ( our "go-to" in Red Deer ) last year during the lock down and it was horrible. Very disheartening. We found ourselves with no other dinner options last week and decided to give it one more try. What an amazing surprise! Even though there was only one woman serving tables and taking all phone orders the service was very attentive and the food was better than ever! We ordered half a dozen different dishes and fought over the leftovers the entire weekend. Way to go Red Star!!! read more

Five stars because - the food is so fresh - and very tasty - (I'm not a Chinese food aficionado, but I've eaten my share) and this restaurant features good, thoughtfully prepared cuisine. Also - fabulous Dim Sum. It's topped off by a really nice staff, who are pleasant and helpful. I've eaten here several times and the food has always been excellent. It's not authentic, but it's not bad food. There is a distinction between Chinese food and food Chinese cook and sell to Westerners. This spot is definitely in the latter category of cuisine. Being Chinese, I tend to like to eat authentic, but I can appreciate the westernised Chinatown stuff as well. The food here is pretty well executed. And, there are dishes here that I really like, for example ... they do a pretty good version of General Tso's Chicken (from Mott Street, New York City) in all it's tart spiciness. The Seafood Birds Nest (from Stockton Street, San Francisco) is pretty good too. The prices are pretty good and the portions are generous. There are some service issues, just a tad less attentive than it should be, but nothing serious. read more

I would rate this restaurant 0 stars if I could! We ordered takeout from the Red Star and upon arrival the door was pad locked and there was no one inside. We waited a while and maybe 15 minutes later a car pulled up, turned out to be the owners. They went inside and locked the door behind them so I called the restaurant instead. When they picked up the phone I explained that we had ordered food and in response she said "sorry not now bye bye". I was taken aback but persisted because the food had already been payed for. she couldn't get off the phone with me quicker. I even tried to ask her how I could get my money back and all I got in response was exactly the same as I mentioned before, and to add to this I mentioned that their times were wrong online then (just to inform her) and she laughed out loud and went "well not right now". Honestly I'm shocked at how bad a restaurants customer service could be. I would have been way less upset if she were to say she was sorry, that there must have been a mix up and let me know if there was any way to fix it. Basic customer service. The food there isn't anything special and there's way better places to go in Red Deer for much better food and way better, if any, customer service. Save your money and time. read more

Terrible food and service. The waitress with the pinkish hair was lazy and ignorant. The food seemed like it came from the buffet which expired hours before we showed up. I know times are tough, but a better effort needs to happen here. Makes me wonder what type of people are working in the kitchen and the state of which the kitchen is in. Stay away. read more

It took approximately 2 hrs to get my order, no apology or discount. They used octopus instead of squid (it's pretty easy to tell the difference and I don't like octopus). It took an hour and a half for our order to be delivered. They use Skip the Dishes but you are unable to track your order. It said it had been delivered when it had not. When I called I was told it would be here "soon". The food itself was very, very bland. Even items that were supposed to be spicy had no flavor. The sweet and sour pork and kung-po chicken was very gelatinous with lots of gooey dough and very little meat. The only decent items were the fried rice and the chow mein, although the portions were smaller that I am used to getting. We were in Red Deer for a lacrosse tournament that my grandson was in. I was looking for a family friendly place that served some Chinese dishes that my grandchildren like and cannot get in Grande Prairie where they live, also at a price that would not bankrupt me. Red Star filled the bill completely. Like another reviewer stated. it is not traditional Chinese, but since very few Chinese people live in Red Deer and the dishes they did have that were close to traditional got me by and were all excellently prepared and very tasty. What really surprised me was that they have a dim sum menu that is very complete and traditional. The dim sum dishes were really good. The service for my party of nine from the waitresses superb; very friendly, helpful and attentive. The restaurant's decor and especially the view was really great. read more

Been here twice and we won't go back. Service really slow, especially Dim Sum. Last time we didn't even get our food after a 20 minute wait despite numerous polite enquiries. If I based my review off of every second order, this place would have gotten 5 Stars. We have never actually been to the Red Star, but we have ordered for delivery six times in the past year. The first time we ordered, it was the best we had ever had. Everything was hot, fresh and flavorful. The second time it seemed like we got yesterday's buffet leftovers. We didn't get sick but we didn't feel great after eating it. However, since it was so great the first time we decided to give it another try and it was perfect again. Quite possibly the worst restaurant experience I've ever encountered. Waitress asked if she could seat us in the far corner which seemed to have been where they store their junk (broken tables, chairs, etc..) while more than half the restaurant was vacant. There were more than a few unusual looks from people sitting at other tables. Sat there for moment feeling fairly clueless as I why she sat us there and was quite frustrated. Another worker came to stand next to the exit with the door open to smoke a cigarette and I had to say something as I was completely disgusted. Approach her asking if we could move to a table in the dining area. It seemed to have been no problem, however her attitude from the moment we walked in was as if she was frustrated herself.
