Notice, there's "beaten" lamb on the menu.
    Crystal H.

We skipped on the tasting, as we'd already had a full morning of tastings, and headed straight for a compelling smell: the barbecue. Red Rooster is a big operation compared to many of it's neighbours, and it offers one wide view of the lake and, of course, vines. The lunch menu is limited to salads and what can be cooked on the grill, but the skewers and accompaniments that come out are first class. It's also worth mentioning that compared to the lunch offerings at other wineries, like Poplar Grove*, Red Rooster's is very reasonable. $16 for the lamb, $14 for the chicken. On the service front, it's pretty tortoise like, so if you're like us with a sorta-time-sensitve schedule to keep, be warned. Our strategy: order right away, and ask for the bill. Bonus - the bill is accompanied by candied rose petals. As someone who scrunches up her nose at the idea of receiving roses, I have to give it to them, I'd love to receive these anytime, anyplace.

Red Rooster certainly ran down the checklist of attributes for a successful winery. Great view of vineyards? Strange sculpture that appears disconnected to the theme of the business? A bistro most people forget is even there? A large tasting room selling stuffed chickens, glasses, bottle openers, and occasionally wine? Check, check, check, and check. It's a stunning location, with vast grassy fields with a shocking lack of grapes. The winery is spacious with ample counter space for numerous groups. Red Rooster does everything right--it just suffers from a lack of personality. Or maybe it's just context, or in contrast to competition. Red Rooster sits across the street from Ruby Blues, the latter overflowing in personality like the waters of the Okanagan (too soon?). High heel shoes. Volkswagen busses. And Red Rooster has chickens. Well...that's okay too. If that garnish does not appeal to you, Red Rooster has an ample of selection of wine, most of which I didn't purchase. Nothing really spoke to me (in the metaphorical way, because if literal, then I have a condition). My girlfriend and I were on a wine trip from Osoyoos to Kelowna. Over a week, we visited 60 wineries and returned with 120 bottles. And obviously, Red Rooster made some form of impact, as we revisited them on a second trip with friends only a few week ago. But on my second trip, I still skipped most the selection. There were exceptions, like a slender bottle of 2013 cabernet franc icewine. Yes, you got me there--I just mentioned none of the bottles appealed to me other than the most expensive one. Call me a sucker; I have a soft spot for red icewines. And it's not even a large portion. Red Rooster has had its share of accolades, and I admit having a mixed palate, so feel free to ignore my eccentricities. Some of the wine I didn't mind, just not enough to pile it into a box and carry it home. But outside of the wine itself, the winery checks all the aforementioned boxes. It does everything else right and is worthy of quick visit. At the very least, with a modicum of effort, you can walk here from across the street from Ruby Blues. Not only that, both Maple Leaf Spirits and D'Angelo also sit just within walking distance, and both of those are good (especially the latter), so why leave this one out?

Red Rooster is another winery with a gorgeous vista of the valley, lake and vineyards. They have some interesting statues around their grounds and the art continues inside -- there's a gallery upstairs. Since we were there in a group of seven, we were taken to a private tasting area on the patio. It was a great way to enjoy the wines! Our host was charming, knowledgeable and had a great sense of humour. He said "let's just be wine snobs for a minute" and then talked to us about some esoteric wine topics. He also dealt as well as he could when a hen party joined us outside. They were totally smashed and obnoxious, in addition to being dressed as hussies (at 2pm at a winery -- clubbing is a different story). They were loud, broke a wine glass and spilled another. It was a mess. Our group just moved aside and the host tried his best to deal with both groups. It was an impressive feat! They have loads of wines to try, and even more on sale in the shop. Most are quite reasonable price points too!

What a beautiful place to enjoy a delicious flatbread, and cheese plate, because that's pretty much the only thing on the menu, but they do a hell of a job at it so it's worth the stop! BC still has their liquor laws backwards, god forbid you actually purchase a bottle of wine from the winery attached to the restaurant and enjoy it on the patio, but you can still get delicious bottles at reasonable prices so I highly suggest a bite and sip on the patio!

    Best burger in the Okanagan!

Best burger in the Okanagan! Hopefully you like mushrooms, bacon and a butter-like bun with your burger. The red wine reduction burger was awesome, of your a burger lover and have a big appetite, check it out!

Beautiful view, great service, fantastic wine. I wish I could live here. We had the pizza and the flatbread and it was phenomenal. I also loved the ice wine and chocolate truffle pairing...to die for.

The peppercorn came through. - 2020 Tempranillo - more herbaceous, a touch smoky and smooth. They're one of two wineries that do tempranillo in the area. - 2020 Gamay - soft, juicy and hints of berry. We bought a bottle ($25.00) for home. Very chill, solid wines from TSW.

Third for me, first for them, and we were on our return trip back to Penticton after just catching Blasted Church before they closed when we discovered one solitary winery in the region was open after 5:30 pm. In fact, even though it might have since changed, Crescent Hill Winery was on this day open until 7. That's amazing, and wise given that it corners the market as people return to their hotels after a long day of drinking. So, with literally no other options, we drove for Crescent Hill. I didn't claim it would be long, interesting, or even necessary story. Still better than Armageddon. This exuberant recommendation of an unembroidered hidden gem does come with a few caveats. The first is that as wineries go, Crescent Hill appears on par with those GMC Vandura Cargo Vans with the words "Free Candy" lazily sprayed on. Seems legit. There is actual garbage fringing the narrow lane down the hill to the limited parking. Even the sign indicating we had not missed the location was a makeshift board with the words "winery" scrawled across it. As I turned in, my friends thought we were about the drive into a Tobe Hooper film. There's no flamboyance to the location; it's all about function. I'll also supplement that by saying renovations were underway and the finished product will probably be more personable. Darn. I kinda liked the ramshackle, like visiting your uncle's moonshine operation...or so I'm told. The walls inside the cozy tasting room were unfinished. The bathroom sported a forsaken toilet surrounded by boxes, dust, and total lack of other facilities. This is not a place you go to celebrate a graduation or a recent breakup. You go in because of the reputation of the wine maker and for a truly personal exchange with said individual. These are the locations I look forward to, where all the elegance is stripped away, leaving only the truly important elements of a wine tour--drinking good wine and talking about that wine to who made it. The owner was delightful and knowledgeable, captivating us far past the moment where he made the sale. The bottles are simple yet surprisingly attractive. It's what's inside that...wait, I just said that? Okay, firstly, a lesson in life, that's not true, though it is here, especially with my two favorite bottles, Consensual Chaos, and Hissy Fit. Amazing names, right? You were just thinking, wow, what do those taste like? They taste like wine, seriously, what else would they taste like? Someone asked me what hints I picked up, the faintest soupçon of a possible vegetable perhaps, or the odd flutter of a good cheese. I responded flippantly by saying it had a winey flavor to it. It's good wine. One was a blush, the other a rose, though I thought those were the same thing. Even if you had better wineries at the time to go to, eventually, Crescent Hill will eventually be the only one left, so you might as well visit. You may end up buying something. In fact, odds are you probably will. And despite appearances, you won't require a tetanus shot.

We had been to Naramata a few times since but because of COVID, Upper Bench was not serving food. Disappointing, but understandable. Anyways this year was our year. We were heading to Naramata from Edmonton for our annual pilgrimage. It took forever with wildfire delays, the rockslide on Hey 9u and other such issues, it we made it. Planned our entire day around getting an Upper Bench pizza. Glorious! We got there on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. Walked up to the host stand with sheer excitement. We were asked if we were there for a tasting and we enthusiastically stated we were there for pizza. We were met with "oh the girl who does pizza called in sick today." Try to imagine the level of disappointment. I asked if there was anyone else that could make a pizza, as it seemed strange to me that only one person could make pizza and that if this person called in sick, the entire pizza operation shuts down. But it would seem this is the way it is. Again, sheer disappointment. Please do better.

It was PACKED when we arrived & we ended up sitting at the bar where they make the pizza, then migrating to a table as it cleared out. We were only there an hour, but quickly found ourselves alone on the patio. We ordered the charcuterie, which had apples, cherries, a couple slices of bread, a red pepper jelly & 3 small-ish slices of cheese. They included their blue cheese, brie and whatever the 'gold' cheese is. We'd seen prosciutto on their boards on instagram and were really bummed that there wasn't a meat included on the board. While the gold cheese was our favourite, the rest of it was honestly underwhelming for $29, which was a bummer considering it's why we chose this place. However, we also ordered a pizza at the suggestion of our server -- just a margarita pizza, plus added proscuitto which was PHENOMENAL! My boyfriend lived in Italy for a year & said it's the closest to authentic Italian pizza he has found since living there in 2017! My partner enjoyed the Merlot, while I drank the Chardonnay -- the Chardonnay is hands down the best I've ever tried. Honestly, I regret not buying more than 1 bottle! The service was prompt, our server was friendly & checked in with us a few times. He made great suggestions & ensured we were well taken care of. Overall, we'd go back even if just for pizza alone next time we're in Penticton or passing through -- but wouldn't make the 1hr drive from Osoyoos just for the charcuterie! Lol.
