Dog Friendly out on the patio!

Incredible setting here at Poplar Grove Winery. Started with a $10 tasting surrounded by beautiful views of the Okanagan Valley. Made our way to our lunch reservation out on the patio and oh man was the food superb! The menu is a bit limited, but when everything is delicious, it doesn't really matter. Everyone in our party was extremely satisfied with their dishes. Beef Tartare- GET!! even if you don't normally eat tartare (like us), but this was super tasty! Halibut Burger - fresh, light, and balanced. Oyster Mushroom Mafalde - yummy pasta Summer Pea Risotto - was perfect And apparently they have fan-favorite Honey Buns which sell out quickly, so we'll have to return for those. Recommended to make reservations for a meal as the patio filled up quick. Also TIP: bring a coverup or jacket/sweater as you can get a bit of a wind tunnel/breezy through the patio if it's not too hot outside.

Still not over my weekend in Kelowna had the chance to check out so many wineries for the very first time! Poplar Grove has such a stunning view to wine and dine in!. -- Their charcuterie board was absolutely amazing! Loved all the flavors that went well with every pairing on the board; gouda, brie, smoked duck, wine marinated beef, smoked salmon, fresh olives, & black berries!. -- I also recommend getting their mussels, such a HUGE portion, two people could share it! Also order a side of bread to dip it into their delicious broth! I kept dipping my spoon in to drink the broth . -- Their soup of the day was a Tomato soup with Parmesan on top which added amazing flavor to it! . ( IG source: @foodaliciious)

Made reservations for Wine Tasting and in the restaurant. During COVID, Poplar Grove did all the right things. As you walk in you are immediately greeted by a host. We were lead to our tasting station and given a sampling of some of their wines. The gal that was pouring our tasting was entertaining and informative. All of the wines tasted were good, some not may fave, but that's the deal with tasting. Once we were done our tasting it was over to the restaurant where the views just couldn't get any more spectacular. Our server was very good and it's what you'd expect from an upscale vineyard (rivaling those of California). I went with the Steak Frites and my Halibut. I have to say her meal was better than mine. I found the while the steak was tender is was a bit flavourless. There is a very nice chutney on the steak which definitely helps. Overall, service for both the wine tasting and the restaurant are very good. I found my meal to be a bit bland, however presentation was excellent. The real deal here is that view of the lake, and having a nice glass of wine to enjoy it ! Definitely go for the view and enjoy the wine !

Beautiful view and very clean and almost brand new looking facility on top of the hill overlooking the winery and the lake. The food was fantastic and very fresh. Great seafood option. We tried the lamb sandwich which was quite tasty. Definitely recommend it.

I bought a Viognier from Poplar Grove, and I felt I had to because the winery itself was so impressive, the kind of place you shoot films or stage weddings at. That was verified the afternoon we were there as a handful of women draped in white and men clad in kilts strode by us on their way to a hill where vows would no doubt be shared. I glanced at my girlfriend as we enjoyed our meal at the Vanilla Pod and she returned a gaze clearly conveying I shouldn't get any ideas. The experience at Poplar Grove begins, like so many, with a very expensive door, one of those traditional and yet expensive entrances you admire, take a photo, and ultimately pass through. Inside sits a less conventional arrangement. Instead of an angular wine bar where several hosts can work their trade, there are several crescent-shaped wine tasting pods. How novel and welcoming. The winery itself though somewhat antiseptic is also spacious and artistic when it needs to be, from the wavy and almost disorientating wine racks to the glass wall overlooking one of the best views of the region. Outside sits the Vanilla Pod restaurant, to be explored in its own review. The winery checks every box required to being a good winery. It even supplies one of those expansive tasting lounges dominated by a single table for larger groups. The hosts themselves are delightful and knowledgeable. The experience was agreeable, leading to a crisis of conscience. I felt compelled to buy at least one bottle. I guess such an impressive display does lead to an inevitable guilt trip. Admittedly, the wine isn't bad, just not terribly exciting. The selection is massive, over twenty varietals, including magnum and double magnums, and maybe if it had been earlier in our journey, we might have picked up more. We had journeyed from Osoyoos to Kelowna, visiting 60 wineries and collecting 120 bottles. And only one was from Poplar Grove. Poplar Grove didn't impress enough to warrant a larger purchase. Not only that but on a second journey only a few weeks ago, although we stopped at the parking lot to show our friends that signature door and breathtaking view, we didn't even go inside. And there's still the Wines of BC that opened only weeks after our return at our local Save-On. But the reason to go to wine country is to experience the wineries, as much as or more than the actual wine, making Poplar Grove the opposite of Monster Vineyards just down the hill. With the latter, their wine is amazing, but the winery is mediocre. This is a review of the location, and Poplar Grove is worth the visit.

Poplar grove view

Fantastic experience! Such a great view as well and really enjoyed our tasting ended up with two bottles of wine. The staff were very nice and very attentive to our needs as well.

Wow! Such a beautiful location, an amazing building and small garden area and the chardonnay and pinot gris are great!

Amazing view and building, wine was just average. Just like the other reviewers have stated, service is poor and staff are rude.

The service was decent, not amazing but to be fair they had a wine tour there when we were there and I am sure the group is going to be what they concentrate on. They have two areas to do their tasting outside; we opted for the tasting inside. Our pourer was younger but very informative and fun. We were given a couple bonus pours. Bottles are in the $19.00 to $45.00 price range. One of the few wineries that show prices with the taxes included. - 2021 Pinot gris - slightly off dry. Fairy solid. - 2021 Bench white - a bit on the sweet side (from the gewurztraminer) with a tropical note. - 2021 Rosé - made from pinot noir grapes. Mostly strawberry and cream notes. - 2020 Pinot noir - medium-bodied with a bit of tartness from the sour cherry. - 2020 Syrah - more full bodied but drier than we expected. The peppercorn came through. - 2020 Tempranillo - more herbaceous, a touch smoky and smooth. They're one of two wineries that do tempranillo in the area. - 2020 Gamay - soft, juicy and hints of berry. We bought a bottle ($25.00) for home. Very chill, solid wines from TSW.

Storytime! My…read morefriends at I were on a wine journey through the Okanagan, second day. Third for me, first for them, and we were on our return trip back to Penticton after just catching Blasted Church before they closed when we discovered one solitary winery in the region was open after 5:30 pm. In fact, even though it might have since changed, Crescent Hill Winery was on this day open until 7. That's amazing, and wise given that it corners the market as people return to their hotels after a long day of drinking. So, with literally no other options, we drove for Crescent Hill. I didn't claim it would be long, interesting, or even necessary story. Still better than Armageddon. This exuberant recommendation of an unembroidered hidden gem does come with a few caveats. The first is that as wineries go, Crescent Hill appears on par with those GMC Vandura Cargo Vans with the words "Free Candy" lazily sprayed on. Seems legit. There is actual garbage fringing the narrow lane down the hill to the limited parking. Even the sign indicating we had not missed the location was a makeshift board with the words "winery" scrawled across it. As I turned in, my friends thought we were about the drive into a Tobe Hooper film. There's no flamboyance to the location; it's all about function. I'll also supplement that by saying renovations were underway and the finished product will probably be more personable. Darn. I kinda liked the ramshackle, like visiting your uncle's moonshine operation...or so I'm told. The walls inside the cozy tasting room were unfinished. The bathroom sported a forsaken toilet surrounded by boxes, dust, and total lack of other facilities. This is not a place you go to celebrate a graduation or a recent breakup. You go in because of the reputation of the wine maker and for a truly personal exchange with said individual. These are the locations I look forward to, where all the elegance is stripped away, leaving only the truly important elements of a wine tour--drinking good wine and talking about that wine to who made it. The owner was delightful and knowledgeable, captivating us far past the moment where he made the sale. The bottles are simple yet surprisingly attractive. It's what's inside that...wait, I just said that? Okay, firstly, a lesson in life, that's not true, though it is here, especially with my two favorite bottles, Consensual Chaos, and Hissy Fit. Amazing names, right? You were just thinking, wow, what do those taste like? They taste like wine, seriously, what else would they taste like? Someone asked me what hints I picked up, the faintest soupçon of a possible vegetable perhaps, or the odd flutter of a good cheese. I responded flippantly by saying it had a winey flavor to it. It's good wine. One was a blush, the other a rose, though I thought those were the same thing. Even if you had better wineries at the time to go to, eventually, Crescent Hill will eventually be the only one left, so you might as well visit. You may end up buying something. In fact, odds are you probably will. And despite appearances, you won't require a tetanus shot.

We had been to Naramata a few times since but because of COVID, Upper Bench was not serving food. Disappointing, but understandable. Anyways this year was our year. We were heading to Naramata from Edmonton for our annual pilgrimage. It took forever with wildfire delays, the rockslide on Hey 9u and other such issues, it we made it. Planned our entire day around getting an Upper Bench pizza. Glorious! We got there on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. Walked up to the host stand with sheer excitement. We were asked if we were there for a tasting and we enthusiastically stated we were there for pizza. We were met with "oh the girl who does pizza called in sick today." Try to imagine the level of disappointment. I asked if there was anyone else that could make a pizza, as it seemed strange to me that only one person could make pizza and that if this person called in sick, the entire pizza operation shuts down. But it would seem this is the way it is. Again, sheer disappointment. Please do better.

Our…read moreentire morning was spent scouring yelp & social media looking for a winery with some gooooood charcuterie. Cheese is one of my love languages and we were excited to try it. It was PACKED when we arrived & we ended up sitting at the bar where they make the pizza, then migrating to a table as it cleared out. We were only there an hour, but quickly found ourselves alone on the patio. We ordered the charcuterie, which had apples, cherries, a couple slices of bread, a red pepper jelly & 3 small-ish slices of cheese. They included their blue cheese, brie and whatever the 'gold' cheese is. We'd seen prosciutto on their boards on instagram and were really bummed that there wasn't a meat included on the board. While the gold cheese was our favourite, the rest of it was honestly underwhelming for $29, which was a bummer considering it's why we chose this place. However, we also ordered a pizza at the suggestion of our server -- just a margarita pizza, plus added proscuitto which was PHENOMENAL! My boyfriend lived in Italy for a year & said it's the closest to authentic Italian pizza he has found since living there in 2017! My partner enjoyed the Merlot, while I drank the Chardonnay -- the Chardonnay is hands down the best I've ever tried. Honestly, I regret not buying more than 1 bottle! The service was prompt, our server was friendly & checked in with us a few times. He made great suggestions & ensured we were well taken care of. Overall, we'd go back even if just for pizza alone next time we're in Penticton or passing through -- but wouldn't make the 1hr drive from Osoyoos just for the charcuterie! Lol.
