We went in for salt blocks but managed to spend an hour just browsing the aisles. They sell a little bit of everything in Ace, which is why I love them so much. Whether you need a Big Green Egg, a Yeti, or canning jars, you can find it at Ace. They had 5 or 6 varieties of apples for sale that you could buy by the pound. I had never seen that in an Ace but they smelled great and so we had to buy some. There is a black cat named Baby that wanders around the store that also adds charm to a small-town hardware plus misc. store. We found it asleep on the deer corn on our visit.

I think a lot of us in the area went into…read moremourning when St. Paul Builders closed, and though we understood the desire of the owners to retire, we worried about losing a hardware store locally, and we worried about the employees. I did, anyway. So it's wonderful to see two familiar faces when I go to Hometown Hardware. This store is smaller than St. Paul Builders, but Steve and Jerry are quick to order anything you need. I wanted some DAP plaster-of-Paris powder, and it was waiting for me the next time I went in--and at a good price. Steve and Jerry are professional, accommodating, and also very nice and friendly. I predict that Hometown Hardware will become as much a local institution as St. Paul Builders was. And I very much appreciate that I don't have to drive a long way just to pick up hardware and supplies. The location in downtown St. Paul is extremely convenient.

I was having trouble mounting a TV on the wall. The included screws in the bracket box did not…read morework out at all. So I headed for a *real* hardware store, NOT a big box home improvement store. Why? Because you get one on one help even when its with the littlest of things such as the needing the right screws. This is important to me especially when I'm in a hurry. Chevy Chase came through for me. There is plenty of off street parking in the back plus a back door for customers. The inside of the store seems huge but its hard to tell since the aisles are narrow and it looks like its two buildings put together inside. The rows of aisles is endless it seems. I got there just before closing and did not have time to browse the whole store. Staff was super friendly and extra helpful. I highly recommend this store for your home maintenance needs.

Paint, nails, cookware, cleaning supplies, tools, keys, and many odd and end items. The guys that work here are great. They strive to assist people any way they can and do it with a huge smile. They also still wear the old school True Value Aprons like they did back in the old days. Entering this specific store is like you went back into time when things were more simpler. I love it. They write everything down on a carbon copy receipt and tally it all up on a hand calculator. This kind of store don't seem to exist any more. This service and nostalgia is why I gave them a 5 star review. These men deserve it. Just stop in and see for yourself.

I needed a key copied for my truck and Lowe's and Home Depot in Lexington were giving me a hassle,…read morewouldn't copy it, etc. The friendly folks at D&S Hardware did a great job copying the key, were super friendly in the way that businesses were decades ago but aren't anymore, and the cost of the key copying was so low that I wanted to leave a tip! I should move from Lexington to Winchester so I can live where stores offer this kind of value and service. The store is conveniently located on Main Street but seemed to have more stuff than the Lowe's superstore near me (where their inventory is a hopelessly disorganized mess). D&S Hardware is well stocked in the way hardware stores were before the big box retailers took over. I love D&S Hardware... not just the large variety of merchandise, friendly and knowledgeable staff and great value. I love the customer oriented attitude they convey and the entire experience of shopping there.

That's what VanHook smells like when you walk in the door. VanHook is definitely the local hardware store. Located in a long and narrow downtown building, the store has a variety of hardware ranging from screws and bolts to paint and barn gadgets. Older men in suspenders are available to assist you, and there's something interesting to find in every aisle. Sure, it's kind of unattractive, cramped, and din, but it works. You'll find what you need here. Need keys cut for your RV? No problem here. We even brought in a paint can from Lowe's and they were able to skillfully color match the paint. WIN. This place may not be as big or have as many options as Home Depot or another national chain, but it's local and they have heart. Support them. Give VanHook a shot before heading to a big box store. Oh, and on your way out, lift up the latch a bit on the door to open it.
