Loved this place!!! We stayed at Warbler cabin. It wasn't exactly a treehouse but you were up in the treetops on the side of a ravine. Spectacular views! The cabin was clean and modern. The wrap around deck and private hot tub were wonderful. So peaceful. Loved everything about it and would highly recommend!!! We rented the Sky Dancer property for three nights. While the property itself is beautiful, we experienced several significant safety concerns that ultimately caused us to leave a day early. Pros: * Great location--close to shops, restaurants and hiking trails, but tucked away enough that it feels private and secluded. * Customer service was very responsive whenever we reached out. * The property is beautifully decorated. The lighting and the cargo nets on the front of the captain's ship were especially fun and a big hit with my son. Cons: Captain's Quarters The Captain's Quarters, which includes the kitchenette and bathroom, is much smaller than it appears in the photos. I would estimate the actual living space to be only about 8-10 feet wide, excluding the bathroom and sleeping loft. While the listing photos accurately show there isn't a couch, it's worth noting that the only seating is a dining table with benches. If the weather keeps you indoors, there really isn't a comfortable place to relax other than sitting on a hard bench or lying on the bed. Ant Problem There appears to be an ongoing ant problem. We noticed ant traps under the sink, which suggests the owners are aware of the issue. Unfortunately, there were ants in the sleeping loft of the Captain's Quarters, and both nights we woke up with ants crawling on us. Safety Concerns Our primary reason for booking this property was the cliffside room, but this is where we encountered our biggest concerns. On our first night, my son noticed that the bedroom door to the cliffside room did not have a lock (see attached photos). I contacted the property the following morning, and they responded quickly, offering us the other cliffside room since it was unoccupied that night. While I appreciated their prompt response, it only partially resolved the issue. The replacement room did have a lock, but it could only be locked from the inside because of the sliding glass door design. As a single woman traveling with a child, I did not feel secure knowing the room could not be locked when we left or adequately secured from outside access. Additionally, access to the cliffside rooms is not truly restricted. The "gate" is essentially just a screen door on a dirt path, with no fencing on either side. Anyone could simply step around it and continue directly to the cliffside cabins. Another serious safety concern was the ladder leading to the Grey Dancer cliffside room. The second-to-last rung on the upper left side appeared to have been completely cut through. It was a clean break that looked as though it had been cut with a saw, making the ladder feel unsafe to use. Because of these issues, we decided to end our vacation a day early. At 11:14 a.m., I notified the property that we were checking out one day ahead of schedule and asked whether a refund for the unused night would be possible. They responded within about 15 minutes, stating they could not issue a refund because their cleaning team had already left. Since standard checkout was at 11:00 a.m. and my request came only 14 minutes later, I was disappointed that there was no flexibility given the circumstances. Overall, while the property is beautiful and the location is excellent, the unresolved safety issues and ant problem outweighed the positives for us. We would not stay here again. If you're considering this property, one of the larger cabins without a cliffside room may be a better option. However, if secure accommodations are important to you, especially when traveling alone or with children, these issues are worth considering before booking. read more

The house was very well set up; We did Boones Hideway. Nice location, very off the grid. No wifi, tv only for dvd's. 4 floors, 3 livable quarters and basement which is off limits. Lots of beds and very unique carpentry inside and out. All you need to stay and cook if you want to make your own meals. Hot tub for 8 and a fire pit for those hot dog & snores times. Little bit of stairs to walk and drive is about 150 feet, so you get a quick work to be in shape for Martins Fork Trail right next to cabin. read more

Roaches, roaches and more roaches. At first I thought our standards might be too high. I was wrong. Upon arrival it was pretty obvious that the photos left out a lot. The swing on the boulder has virtually no path way and is very difficult to get to. The bedrooms were surprisingly eerie, the dishes were filthy and you could tell it hadn't been dusted in a long time. The shower needs recaulked and there is what appears to be black mold growing where it needs to be recaulked. The wood provided for $25 wasn't great and at no point could we get it to light. We did notice someone else had thrown the same wood piece burned like ours that they couldn't get to light on the side of the house. The stairs to get to and from the car aren't great. The ceiling fans with the lights only worked sometimes. One of the AC units didn't work at all. All of this isn't enough to make me give it two stars. After me and my dog were creeped out by the room on the first night I went to go sleep on the couch but there were too many bugs. It is the woods, so that's to be expected. But what I didn't expect was for me to go up to bunk with my friend in their bed and find a large dead roach that someone had stomped on and left previously. Having been grossed out by that we decided to do a bed bug check. They have no bed protection to prevent bed bugs, and we saw some red flakes on the mattress topper. At this point we both decided to sleep on the couch where we ended up sleeping the entire time. The next morning we went through all of our luggage one by one and bagged everything and carried it to the car one by one to not bring home roaches. This took up the entire day. We decided to reward ourselves with a soak in the hot tub which was the highlight of our trip. Then came the large live roach in the living room. We decided with everything packed up in the car and everything inside packed into bags to get out and see the gorge. Unfortunately for us this was the only day we experienced any of the gorge. We had planned to cook but were feeling uneasy about the roaches but decided I would make one good meal for us. I showered then my friend went to shower and the water ran out. I will say, the most wonderful maintenance man Stuart did his very best to make it easy on us. We were without water from about 8:30 pm till noon the next day. So obviously, no hot tub that night and by the time I had finished cooking and cleaning without water we were both exhausted- so we ended up sleeping (again we were sleeping on the couch) for most of the next day considering we couldn't shower until the water was back on. Stuart was at our place in 25 minutes at 9 pm once he was alerted of the situation. Every number I called led me to another number to call or text and we did get a text reply after the 11th call. We did notice earlier that day that a light under the porch was on before the water went out. It wasn't on previously so we have no idea who was there doing what during our one day out but it was creepy to know that someone had come by and been underneath the house. Stuart brought us two very large water jugs to hold us over and carried them up those stairs at 9 pm the night the water went out. He was back 3-4 times to check on us and update us about the water. He was so sweet, very considerate and we absolutely adored him. He is the reason I'm not giving 1 star and also one of the highlights of our stay there. Obviously it can be a little uncomfortable having a man come to your cabin at night but he was absolutely amazing and we TRULY appreciate how much he cared and updated us. Stuart gets 11/10 in our book! Once the water was back RRG offered us an extra night at a 'discounted rate.' At that point we were already only staying because we paid for it and were already trying to make the most of it. Between the roaches and the water outage, the time spent trying to light a fire and the time spent trying to sleep knowing there's roaches all around you it was a stressful, really crappy excuse for a cabin vacation. We considered leaving several times but toughed it out since we had already spent the time, money and effort to be there. We had a full schedule planned, in the end we only did 2 things we had on our agenda. I can honestly say this was the worst experience I've ever had staying in a cabin and we will never stay there again. We encountered 5 large roaches total. We stayed from Sunday night to Thursday at noon. I would not recommend these cabins ever. Stuart does deserve a raise though as he is awesome! We stayed at Boulder Springs. read more

Hygee cabin rental review: We recently stayed at this rental and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience, especially given the price point compared to other properties we've rented. Here's a clear summary of the issues we encountered: * Driveway is not suitable for larger vehicles and likely needs replacement * Bedroom door was broken and never addressed * Hot tub was not usable until the final day * Dryer appears to be a fire hazard * Toilet functioned, but had very low suction and visible sediment In addition to the major issues, there were several cosmetic and cleanliness concerns throughout the unit: * Holes in the walls * Pet scratches and damage on lower doors * Areas that were not fully painted or finished * Ongoing issue with stink bugs -- we came back each afternoon to find 12-14 on or around the front windows There were also significant issues with the setting and overall experience: * Constant freeway noise, including car alarms waking us multiple times during the night * A large convenience store/gas station at the bottom of the hill that is brightly lit at night (orange and blue lighting), clearly visible when sitting outside and detracting from the atmosphere Overall, this property fell well below expectations and did not reflect the quality we anticipated at this price. Unfortunately, based on this experience, we would not stay here again or book with this company in the future. read more

Red River Gorgeous rentals at Natural Bridge State Resort Park is awesome! We rented a tree house from these folks, and everything was perfect! We stayed in The Sylvan Float tree house, and our neighbors were also nice enough to let us explore their space in The Observatory. We also walked over and checked out The Trade Winds, though we didn't get to go inside. Everything we saw and experienced was awesome! I highly recommend these rentals. It's such a fun experience! Red River Gorgeous was easy to work with and everything was as they said it would be. We didn't have any issues whatsoever, and we had a wonderful trip! We definitely plan to return to check out the newest tree house addition - The Looking Glass! read more

Red River Gorgeous is our favorite cabin company in the Gorge. We have been staying in their cabins for 7 years and should have posted something sooner. We have stayed at Wildfire, Firefly, Backcountry, and MossRock. We go to get away and enjoy the outdoors. Without satellite tv it forces you to relax and have meaningful conversations. We enjoy the off the grid cabins which do not have electric and toilets instead they have an outhouse. MossRock is our new favorite. This place is a short hike up a path that can take your breath away. From the hike and the views. We have been there with large groups of people and just the two of us. They have a lot of room on the porch. One of the trips we had so many people that our brother slept with his family on the porch in a tent that they brought. It is off the grid so no electric and no toilet. The outhouse does have a large window that provides an excellent view. They do have a propane stove and heater (winter is our favorite time to go) Water is provided but we always bring our own as well. We do use the water from the pumps to fill up the shower bucket. Literally a bucket that is on a pulley system that you can shower in the tub. In the winter we will heat up the water on the stove which takes some time but is worth it. It is very secluded and close to many hiking trails. Martins fork is down the hill. Most people will go to Greys Arch but our favorite is Daniel Boone Hut for a short hike and Rough Trail for a longer hike. We are not huge climbers but was told that this is the closest cabin to Left Flank and Military wall which are suppose to be one of the best places to climb in the Gorge. Firefly is smaller version of MossRock and do not need to hike to it. They don't have a tub like MossRock. The porch is cozy but spent a lot if time on it because of the view it provides. We have only stayed in the winter and fall (again our favorite time to go to the Gorge) but always kept warm from the propane heater on the wall. We bring headlamps and lanterns that provide us light for a game of monopoly or cards that are not provided but bring with us. Wildfire is a great place if you want electric and a toilet. It has a beautiful window that faces the creek. Our first stay we thought the propane heater was not working but it was user error. My wife kept turning off the water so did not allow time to heat the water since it is on demand and does not have a tank. They do have a beautiful covered porch with a nice swing. We have used this area to grill when it was raining. read more

My family and I just stayed at the Looking Glass tree house from Red River Gorgeous rentals and it was incredible! It was immaculate when we got there and was exactly what I was looking to surprise the kids with. I was a little worried about staying in a tree house with an upcoming storm, and Aaron was wonderful about talking to me about what to expect, even stating that they would let me opt out of renting it if we decided not to come (and without losing our money!) Zack also professionally answered my e-mail about my concerns and we decided to go for it. I'm so glad we did! It is an incredible tree house, complete with a flush toilet (you know you were wondering) and hot shower in the bathhouse at the bottom of the stairs (41 stairs if you wanted to know). Aaron was quick to respond to any questions and was great to offer help. He has a great attitude and his love of the place really shows! (And his daughter Teagan is adorable!) The storm came in and everything Aaron and Zack said held true. The tree house was rock solid; the rain on the roof was wonderful to listen to as we fell asleep. The rushing waterfalls and birds chirping in the morning were glorious to wake up to! The sleeping arrangements were comfy and my kids loved sleeping in the hammocks! The kitchen was well-equipped (I'm talking microwave, mini-fridge, coffee pot) and we had a blast just enjoying nature and each other. I definitely plan on doing this again someday! I highly recommend Red River Gorgeous cabin rentals. My daughter and I stayed in the Observatory this past weekend. The treehouse was incredible - 4 separate rooms accessible by walkways and ladders. Our favorite room was the bedroom - perched high atop the structure amidst the trees with beautiful views of the Gorge. The sky lit up with starts at night and we spent a lot of time sitting on the top deck using the binoculars provided gazing at the night sky. Breathtaking. The treehouse had everything we needed for a comfortable stay - including a battery powered fan for the hot summer temps. Pots and pans, utensils, a gas powered stove and even a small power charger that charged our phones each night. The staff went above and beyond to provide great service. There was a car alarm beeping for several hours and echoing throughout the Gorge. I called the office to ask if they could help in any way. They drove around the area several times and must have found the culprit because the beeping stopped. Thank you RRG for an incredible weekend at the Observatory. Memories my daughter and I will treasure. read more

My four friends and I enjoyed our stay at Wildflower cabin this last weekend for a quick climbing trip. The cabin was very clean and it was plenty of room for all of us! There were notable changes since pictures posted on their website was taken. Mattress pads and pillows were actually provided (no pillow case). The fridge/freezer was a little small but it served our purpose. I was a little hesitant reserving this place because of a previous review, but upon arrival and through the trip, I see that the staff at RRG definitely paid attention and took care of any problems. There were plenty of kitchen and dining utensils. We did not include linens or firewood in our reservation. We all used our own sleeping bags and pillows. We did not arrive on our first day until super late. I gave them a call ahead of time to let them know. They were very accomodating and gave us directions so that it made our arrival as easy as possible. The staff was also available and very responsive to my inquiries via email. Overall very satisfied with this rental. I recommend this cabin and company to anyone. read more

Stayed at the wildflower cabin.bought wood wasn't left for me. Mattress was dirty and no tp in the bathroom.random women showed up NOT wearing a mask to put curtains up.that could've waited, since the first day i didn't have any why would the second day matter?if i had to go to the office twice think they could've asked if i wanted them in or not.the whole reason i went was to get away and not be bothered.the wood i bought and finally received was wet and didn't burn.ended up just leaving the 2nd day at 2pm.waste of money and a good time read more

Usually iam very much easy to please..but they miss the mark here at the tall timbers cabin. Filthy! It pains me to leave a bad review because if the owners are unable to check on it regularly they may assume the cleaning crew is doing their jobs when in fact they are not. The floors were so bad we were shocked,but whatever...then there were so many bugs! Ok I get this is the south but last year we got a cabin just like this one in Tennessee and it was immaculate and no bugs at all! We had tons of spider and white a few cockroachesa huge one on our bedroom wall making it unable for u to sleep.were from MI and are not used to that especially a cockroach almost the size of a very small lizard.i didn't get a pic of that one before we killed it because we were just so freaked out. so on our bedroom floor there were more dead cockroach and a very old piece of French fry. We didn't eat in the rooms at all and never had fries. There was no hot tub which was a bummer. It does state in the website no hot tub but seen videos and reviews on this very cabin with a very nice hot tub on site so that was very misleading. It would of been an ok stay except it couldn't of been cleaned in a very long time and to many bugs. read more

Ever since I was a kid I dreamed of sleeping in a treehouse. Thanks to Red River Gorgeous and the Canopy Crew, you can sleep in a treehouse with many creature comforts in an off the grid hideaway. Located 2 hours from Cincinnati or Louisville, Ky, The Red River Gorge is a rock climbers haven with many limestone outcroppings and the most natural arches in the eastern US. The area is also known for some of the best trails, such as The Sheltowee Trace, which runs the entire length of Kentucky north to south. To get to the parking area one must go through the Nada Tunnel, a rough-hewn one lane tunnel that can be a game of cat and mouse if another car is approaching. The Observatory treehouse rental gets its name from the high-powered telescope that sits 50 feet above the ground on the highest level of the 3-level structure. To reach the treehouse requires climbing 200 guard railed steps to reach the gear room. There is a crane built in for hoisting coolers or sleeping gear to the upper levels. Off the gear room is the composting toilet complete with giant window overlooking the canyon. Climb a few more steps and open the hatch to the kitchen complete with propane cooktop, built in countertop/seating, solar lighting, 10 gallons of water, and propane heat. Climb up to the top level and find the large deck and bedroom with full size bed, propane heat, and glass ceiling for star gazing. I recently visited the Observatory for an overnight on a cold January evening. It was great to get away from TVs and cellphones. We cooked mahi tacos and sipped wine next to a roaring fire on the fire pit at the bottom of the steps. Your heart rate will soar as you climb the steps from the ground to the top level! We were unable to use the telescope as that night was cloudy. We experienced the quality of workmanship that evening as the winds picked up and gave the treehouse a test. Except for some rattling in the doors and windows, the treehouse remained stable and secure with minimal swaying. It was a perfect spot for proposing to my bride to be! We woke to the bright Kentucky sun and hot coffee from the French press provided. Rates start at $225/night in the low season (winter) and go to $325/night for the high season (summer). The best time to visit is late spring when the mountain laurel is in bloom and fall when the leaves turn. There is a shower available at the nearby office and too many trails to mention in this "Alice in Wonderland" landscape. Besides rock climbing there is ziplining, canoeing on the Red River, and a must stop at Miguel's Pizza, a legendary hangout for climbers and the best food in the area. Allow me to preface this review with the following statement - I'm in the Army and I have slept in plenty of crappy environments. With that being said, I still have reasonable expectations of cleanliness when I'm paying money to stay somewhere. That expectation applies even in a rustic, bare-bones cabin such as the one I stayed in this past Labor Day weekend (I stayed in the Sycamore.) There are positives - the location is great. We were within walking distance of the Martin's Fork trailhead - thus giving us the ability to hike the Rough Trail from our cabin. But there was just one issue that I couldn't get over. We walked into the cabin on Friday night and did our usual checks - making sure there are no axe murderers hiding, scoping the place out, etc. We decided after our initial look that we would sleep on the futon instead of the actual bed because the window AC unit was in the main room. After stripping the flat and fitted sheets that we paid $15 for off the bed so we could transfer them to the futon, we noticed the bed was COVERED in mouse poop. That is not an exaggeration. It literally looked like someone was making chocolate cupcakes in the bed and dumped the sprinkles. The fact that the fitted sheet was on the bed with all of this mouse crap under it, to me, says that whoever prepared the cabin consciously overlooked it and decided that was acceptable. It doesn't stop there. There was also mouse feces in and on the dishes, on the counter tops, and on the wooden shelves that were hung. You know, pretty much any surface that would be of any use to us. To top it off, the mice visited us while we slept that night and nibbled on some of our food. The cool part was, they also pooped in our travel bags! YAY! Anyway, enough about the ridiculous amount of mouse dump. I tried contacting management and was told they would get back to me ASAP, though my guess would be that my contact information probably got deuced on by a mouse because I never heard from them. So I emailed them - no response. Then I decided to suggest they change the name of the cabin to "Mouse House" and notified them of situation on Facebook. Yeah, they pretty readily deleted that wall post - which I think is funny because one of the testimonials on their website says "NO MICE!" which is a pretty random, unprovoked observation if you ask me. When I stay at a hotel or a bed and breakfast, my first thought isn't "Man, what a great hotel. They didn't even have mice!" But I digress. My significant other messaged their Facebook in the event they may take the time out of stuffing mouse nuggets in their beds to respond - but they declined to do so as well. In short - unless you have a mouse poop fetish and thoroughly enjoy being ignored after an exchange of services for money - sleep in your car or spend the $15 on a back country camping permit before you even consider this place. read more

The owners of these properties have gone above and beyond the call of duty. I got my car stuck with one wheel hanging off the edge of the embankment. When I came back the next morning to meet AAA, there was already a rope and a pulley set up. Not only did he help me pull my car up onto the road, but he backed it down for me. This is such a gorgeous area and the owners couldn't be better people! I'll be definitely be staying there next time I go! read more

My husband and I just returned from Red River Gorge where we were celebrating our anniversary. We decided we were up for a little adventure and rented the "luxurious, off-the-grid" cabin - MossRock. This place has so much potential - but we were incredibly disappointed when we realized that no one had bothered to actually clean the cabin prior to our arrival. We first found a shirt on the deck furniture. The outhouse clearly hadn't been attended to in awhile. Some creature had been in there and shredded toilet paper everywhere. There were cobwebs throughout the kitchen area. The container of water in the bathroom was undrinkable and had a film across the top of the water jug. It seemed to me that there were so many little things that could have made this a spectacular stay! 1) cleanliness; 2) providing tea lights/candles that actually had some wax left; 3) letting renters know that there isn't any wood provided for the fire pit; 4) having a wood sling so that you could easily haul wood up to the cabin; 5) providing clean dishes; 6) responding to email inquiries. - Nice touches and good customer service - that simple. There were definitely some positives - being tucked in the woods, away from the road was great. The design and materials used for the cabin were nice. The porch swing was fabulous! read more

My husband and I choose Red River Gorgeous as a place to spend our wedding anniversary. We were put in Tall Timbers Cabin. In the pictures the cabin looked very nice and it seemed like an ideal place to spend some quality time and get in some hiking and share the beauty of Red River Gorge. However, upon arrival we immediately regretted the decision. The cabin didn't appear nearly as nice as it did in the pictures. Actually, it wasn't nice at all. The pictures online appeared as though they were taken when the cabin was originally built before being used. It appeared as if it hadn't been cleaned since then either. We felt completely ripped off!!! We have rented cabins every year for our anniversary and have paid a comparable price, if not less considering the extra fees we paid for linens and firewood. Not to mention the linens were stratchy uncomfortable blankets that I remember having as a kid back in the 1980's. Definitely not worth paying extra for. The cabin was in poor shape and in need of maintanence and a thorough cleaning. It smelled musty and foul upon entering. It states it sleeps 4. Maybe 4 drunken college kids who don't care where they pass out at because no sober person would want to sleep on these beds. My husband and I carried our bags inside and upon walking around and checking the cabin out we carried them right back to the car and left to find a decent place to sleep. Before my husband agreed that we should go find somewhere else to stay I was comtemplating how I could sleep in my car because that would have been better than sleeping in the cabin and definitely cleaner. This anniversary trip was a major disappointment considering all our activities were planned around red river gorge and we had to go stay an hour away because the cabin was so awful. read more

If you are looking to be immersed in the wild beauty of the Red River Gorge then this is your place! If you are looking for elegant accommodations, go elsewhere. The cabins are simple and beautiful in their simplicity. Some cabins have creeks running alongside them while others are on hill sides, off the grid and surrounded by the lush vegetation of the Gorge. I felt the cost was a little high for such simple accommodations (that's why 4 stars instead of 5) but was willing to pay a little more for the location. Speaking of the location, it is nearly smack dab in the middle of the Red River Gorge Geologic Area so it makes a great location out of which to do day trips. We also "hired" the managers to shuttle us to the other side of the wilderness area so we could backpack and not have to do any backtracking, which worked great. read more

The windows were wonderful and I loved the little kitchen. having no running water or electricity wasn't even an issue because of the scenery and hiking. I have stayed in two different cabins owned and maintained by Red River Gorgeous on three seperate occasions. Twice in the Backcountry shelter (No electricity or running water) and once in one that has electricty and water. Both times were great! The Backcountry shelter exepecially has an awesome location. Cabins were clean and met ever expectation that I had. I'll definitely be going back for another stay! read more
