What a big disappointment just had what can only be one of the worst roast lunches ever. Used this pub a few times and had some good food over the last year and after a day in the garden decided to have a late lunch / early evening meal. Arrived at 4pm ordered - starters fine and then onto roast pork which was a pile of lumps of meat and fat to the level that it was not eatable, the bar staff came over to see if it was all ok at that point I explained the problem after a very blank response my husband suggested that they changed my meal. So roast beef was then order the new meal then arrived - but no offer of veg, sauces or even cutlery - after a few minutes and a prompt from another member of staff I eventually got cutlery and an offer of sauces ( which was half a teaspoon in a dirty bowl) at this stage I just carried on and ate the meat the veg was then served 10 minutes later. The 2nd meal was just about passable but what has made the situation for me even more poor is in the time that I was sat as the customer really not very happy a member of staff sat on a near my table eating a roast with all the veg etc in place that the chef even delivered to her table - but me as the customer was left waiting. The service / training in the pub has only made the poor meal even worst! If you take my advise think long and hard before you sample the Red Lion at holt Heath they are not a good example of a well run pub and save your money for a pub that values their customers read more

I just want to say I have been told that I am a good cook, with this in mind I resent paying for meals out that I feel I could cook better. This has never been the case when I have eaten at the Red Lion. The prices are more than you would expect for pub grub, but the food here is certainly way above Pub Grub and I feel well worth the money. The staff are always friendly, service can be slow, but this is explained in the menu and is because all food is cooked to order from fresh. The Red Lion is one of the very few places that I trust to cook a meal for me as I have allergies to the whole of the onion familythat's onions, leeks, chives, garlic, shallotsthe chef is always able to prepare a sauce for me without making me ill, which is more than I can say for a lot of other restaurants in the area. There is plenty of choice on the menu and the fish specials change on a daily basis depending on what is best on the day. My husband and I have never been disappointed. I recommended the Red Lion to someone a while ago, I saw him last week and he told me that he had eaten there recently and thanked me for the recommendation. read more

We have been twice to Red Lion at Holt Heath, on both occasions we were well served, the food being excellent as was the beer and service! We decided to book for lunch on the 27th November I looked up the pub on the web in order to get the phone number, which I found on this site. Well, after reading a couple of negative reviews, I was in two minds, BUT I thought its been OK previously. So off we went at the appointed hour and were greeted politely and shown to a table, drinks were served, excellent Wye Valley HPA, Food was ordered, very nice it looked, it sure was, well cooked well presented, NO complaints whatsoever. So today, the 27th November 2011 we are well satisfied with our trip to the Red Lion, yes it is more expensive than the usual buy one get one free joints, but you get what you pay for. I shall also reveiw this pub on Trip Advisor, where if you are interested lokk for the reviews by BaWoch, which is my Polish name but these days its just Tony Dewsbury, its easier to say. I would like to say that the Red Lion Holt Heath was recommended to my wife and I by friends some five years ago. Since then, even though the Red Lion is about an hours drive away, we have dinned as a couple ,taken friends and family members and on each occation we have always recieved a warm friendly welcome from julie and her team. The food is always freshly cooked to order,hence an advised slight delay, before being served in a proffessional and polite manner by the smart waitress's. Carol and I have dinned at the Red Lion on christmas day for the last five years. Previous hotels and restaurants we have frequented on Christmas day have had a set menu,but the Red Lion offer a variety of tradition dishes to select from so each year can be somthing new to look forward too. Finally, watching some of the cooking competitions on tv it is apparent that the winning combination is firstly a good choice of dish then the ability to produce that dish at the exact same quality, time afer time after time, thats what is created in the Kitchens at The Red Lion. read more

A groups of local mothers went to The Red Lion for a Christmas meal. table was booked for 7pm. We were sitting down by 7:05pm after being berated by the owner for being late. We asked for the menus, waited 10 mins. No menus came. The owner struts over and demands to know why there are 4 of our party missing. We didnt know they werent coming until we arrived. The owner launches into a tirade of abuse infront of two other tables of people about how she cannot run a business when places have not been cancelled in advance. The place was virtually empty and she is saying she has turned people away (hmmm?) A member of the group politely reminds this woman she is being very rude to our group of ladies, and she goes completely nuts and tells us to leave. I had been told this woman was rude, and they were right! So she lost at least £200 last night because she obviously has never learnt a thing about customer service! We went down the road to the Lenchford who were most accomodating and the food was great. take my advice, don't even bother! read more

After reading some of the reviews on this site i have to comment arrived at The Red lion 30.10.11 car park very busy, greeted with a very warm welcome by Julie we later found out owns the Red lion ordering 2 glasses of wine we were given the menu although the restaurant was very busy there was no rush to order the order taken we were asked to go to our table starters arrived gorgeous giving us a small break between courses was wonderful and yes it does explain there may be a little wait as everything cooked fresh to order main course arrived roast beef for both of us plenty of fresh vegetables the waitress then came over to check everything to our liking SUPERB as we are not dessert people we were asked if we would like cheese a more than generous cheese plate arrived julie and serge came to have a chat with us asking how we had enjoyed our experience and explaining how long they had had the Red Lion we walked away thinking not only a wonderful lunch but gained friends in the process well worth a trip certainly will be returning read more

I cannot rate the service, food and attentiveness enough at the red lion. Julie and serge are the perfect hosts and along with the staff, the welcome I receive, whether it be with my partner, friends and or family is great. Unlike many other restaurants now, the service is always personal, which is without a doubt refreshing! The food is always faultless. The traditional Sunday roasts on offer are the best in the area. They use local produce and there aren't many places which offer beef cooked pretty much to your likingrare or well done. The Lebanese food on offer is also excellent. It's as traditional as you're going to get in the uk. Julie and serge are great. They now their food, their wine and how to run an excellent restaurant. Any below negative comments are I'll deservedthe fact this place is fully booked for Xmas day by the beginning of September without a menu being finalised, in my view, screams a loud and proud message! read more

I live locally to this pub and the car park always seems busy.. generally a good sign. They have boards outside advertising fresh fish etc so when a friend of mine suggested going out as a foursome we thought we'd give it a go. Big mistake!! Starters were very average, my friends wife had a pate and said the chutney tasted like vomit. It was returned and the chef came out and aggressively proclaimed it had been mad fresh that afternoon. My friend and I had a fish sampler dish for the main course. Essentially four small portions of different fish (one absolutely full of bones) and a small pot with side salad... that was it. My wifes fish was over cooked, needless to say we didn't bother with puddings. So that was three starters, four main courses and 7 drinks (three of which were soft drinks) - £120!!! Against my better judgement we paid the bill and left, never to return. read more

I second the previous comment: "One of the worst roast lunches ever". I've been to the Red Lion twice before on quiet evenings and had no complaints. Today I decided to go for Sunday lunch and clearly they are not capable of handling a restaurant full of people. We waited 30 minutes just to be given the menus, another 30 minutes for the starters and another 45 minutes for the mains. I ordered the roast pork meal and was re-assured that it came with crackling. When it arrived there was none, apparently they had run out. To make it worse the pork was dry and overcooked. I've had better roast meals in my local "2 for 1" carvery at half the price! The service was dis-organised and food distinctly pedestrian. Needless to say I shall not be returning. read more

I can only comment on my own experiences at The Red Lion at Holt Heath, the food has always been of good quality and value. I always expect to wait longer if food is being freshly prepared but this wait has never been an issue. The service is always most attentive and Julie, the owner always goes out of her way to stop and have a chat, she is also very good at remembering faces and useful titbits of information about you. All I would say is, rather than be led by other peoples comments why not go and try The Red Lion for yourself and make your own mind up. read more

We went to this pub recently and what a dissapointment my meal turned out to be, my partners meal was fine ( pork! ) I had the green thai chicken, the chicken was like the processed suppermarket stuff, I left most of it on the plate, I regret not complaining at the time, but decided to the following day on the phone to ask for a refund on my meal only! a man insisted it was fresh chicken and would speak to his partner and get back to me within 24 hours they never did. and we will never go there again. I've eaten at the Red Lion on quite a few occasions now both for evening meals and lunches. The service is always top notch I'm greated with a smile and treated like an old friend. The menu is extensive food to suit different tastes and palets. All the food is freshly cooked to order and is served hot. The pub is very well patronised and this makes for a generally busy and friendly atmosphere. I congratulate Julie and Serge and their team on their business and hard work that they put in for it surely pays off. read more
