On a day out of the city we visited this super secluded pub on the outskirts of Kings Norton/Wythall. I actually really like the vibe of the place! Apparently this place brews their own ales onsite which I like a lot I however am not drinking at the moment so went for a reliable diet coke and just took in the country side setting and traditional vibe of the space......oh....and half a pack of pork scratchings ;) If you are looking for a nice quiet traditional countryside pub where you can walk in in your wellies with the dogs this is ideal! read more

Revisited -8/8/12. I checked the website to read the menu, and saw things were the same; which was great I was looking forward to the whiting, and the fillet steak. As I have said before, one of the best places around for a fillet steak. It was our wedding anniversary, and my wife and I were looking forward to the evening. I'd booked a taxi (£20 round trip), booked the table. All set Arrived very few people in the place, the music was bordering on the funereal (ner the end of the evening the CD went into a stutter). Still I had my steak to look forward to. Arrggh! They've changed the menu. No whitebait, no fillet steak. New Chef! I was a captive audience. The next best thing I liked on the starter menu was the pâté. This was good, the toast was nice and hot, the pâté was flavoursome, and the Cumberland chutney added to the flavour. The only thing that let it down was that I was looking forward to the whitebait. Now that I have revisited the site I can see where things went wrong. I used the drop down tab Real Food and looked at the standard menu. I should have looked to the left-hand side and looked at the item: **Take a look at our 2012 main menu** Unfortunately, this wasn't obvious enough on my previous visit to the site. If you have top tabs then that is where I am going to go first and not news items. Drinks to start I had a pint of WHB My wife had a large glass of Pinot Grigio; it would have been more cost effective to have bought the bottle. Again I missed read the wine menu per glass prices. Perhaps it's my age. My wife chose the sirloin steak, and I had the ribeye. They were very tender, but mine was quite thin for a ribeye, and the streaks of fat, that normally makes this steak juicy, were absent. The chips were nice and chunky, but too much for me after the starter. The waitress assured me that the peas weren't tinned, but they had that sweet flavour. However, I must admit that I enjoyed the flavour. It was all washed down with our favourite red wine Marqués de Cáceres Rioja Crianza a bit overpriced at c.£19, shop price is about £9.50. We even order another bottle of wine at the end, a Pinot Grigio, that was nice too. The waitress was very attentive, and took time to chat, but I suspect that was due to the lack of clientele. Also, when I arrived, I couldn't see my name in the book for the reservations. Yes, the evening was clouded by what we expected, and what we went to the restaurant for in the first place. My wife said she wouldn't revisit. I've dropped it one start, but really would only have done so by a half. Shame.27/7/11 Update Food good as usual. One of the best places locally for a good fillet steak. I have mine blue, and no blood oozing out. I didn't have a sweet, but I had a starter of whitebait, which was very nice. My wife went for the traditional prawn cocktail. She enjoyed. This is so 70s, but it's a favourite with most people. I enjoyed the beer. The wine, which we have bought in Spain when on holiday, was perhaps a bit overpriced, but couldn't fault the taste. Only one fly in the ointment I had to wait over half an hour for the bill. -- I haven't been back here for quite some time. When we arrived it was packed with elderly folk, and I believe they do a special deal before 18:30, but I haven't got the details. Starters, not a great selection from my point of view, but that makes for an easier time in the kitchen. I had the pate, and it was fine, I like mine coarser, but still very nice. My wife like deep fried brie, and there was plenty for a starter. We decided to take the chance on the 21 day hung Scottish beef. We both had the fillet. My wife likes hers closer to well done, whereas I prefer blue. If the steak is as sold it shouldn't be a problem. Both were actually quite something. Mine just seem to melt in my mouth, and had a lovely taste. My wife enjoyed hers, and left some simply because of too mu brie. So I helped out. Everything was freshly prepared and cooked. The starters had freshly prepared salad. None of this preparing in the morning, going dry in the afternoon, and served limp in the evening. The staff were friendly, and joined in with the banter. Yep, a place well worth visiting. I was too full for the sweets. I hear that the pub side have very good ales. Comment from their website: The only pub to win the CAMRA Pub of the Year Award four years running. Evening Mail Restaurant of the Year.Returning on the 18/9/09 will do a follow up review. Some people hade said that this place isn't consistent, but it has been for me. I had the Chilli Chicken for my starter, and it was delicious. The chilli sauce sweet, with a little kick. I had the T-Bone steak this time, and wasn't disappointed. My wife had the fillet, and it was equally as good. A chatty waitress who we knew from a previous restaurant. If you get her talking, she won't stop. No, that's not a criticism, she was very nice, and funny, with some witty banter. read more

For me this is a proper pub.it has a side you can go and eat if you want, but for me it has a proper bar area where you can have a pint or two with your dog if you have been out walking,or your parrot...yes parrot ive seen them in there..befor i started drinking .great outdoor area super friendly people, they even chat to me! We love to go to this pub for a decent pint, to sit in the beer garden and be quintessentially British. It's a lovely pub with food and a restaurant attached. You need to book for the restaurant but can just turn up for the pub grub. The beer garden is lovely, there isn't a play area for the children but there is some pace for them to run around, with the odd tree to climb. Children are generally welcome, but not in the bar. It's a popular place and can get very busy on summer afternoons and evenings. The pub food is good stuff. Not gourmet or spectacular, but tasty and decent value. The thing that really sells this place for my husband is the onsite brewery. The Weatheroak Brewery makes sone very tasty tipples and is popular with beer lovers. They offer their own beer festivals as well as special events like pig roasts. We tend to go here in the summer when we have the children, and on our own (when we get the chance) during the other months. It's nice and cosy inside in colder weather. A note to parents here, there tend to be quite a few dogs around with their owners in the beer garden, so be aware if your children aren't keen on our furry friends. The dogs all seem o have been well behaved whenever we've been here though. read more

Utter rubbish! The table was not set properly, half the cutlery/serviettes were missing, no apology to say let me get that corrected, we had to ask for the cutlery when the mains arrived. The menu was different to online and nowhere near as good plus the menu was a creased piece of A4 paper! And still the menu hasn't been changed online after we brought it to their attention 2 days ago!! Customer service, smiles, friendless was lacking and the general atmosphere and appearance of the pub was awful. Food was average. We came a year ago, amazing how downhill it has gone!! read more

Who doesn't fancy a good quality pork pie with mustard on, washed down with a pint of locally brewed IPA in a lovely family and farmer friendly beer garden out in the English countryside on a summers day? Why not grab yourself a freshly prepared crusty cob with thick roasted ham in from the bar. Or a cheese cob that uses the creamiest, locally sourced slab of cheese there is. Add onions from the bowl on the bar to give it that real traditional taste. If youre not that hungry why not go for a pack of scratchings. Yum. Don't bother with the food. Was served an overbaked pie obviously reheated and a chicken curry that should have been called vegetarian. 3pieces of tiny chicken. Did complain but just got a measly sorry. Have eaten here several times before and it's average and can be hit and miss but this was dire. Will not eat there again read more

One of my favourite places...the menu is fairly priced and varied. Their half pint white bait is something to behold...chunky chips, generous portions. Fabulous cider, friendly, large garden (even being on a slight hill brings it's funny side. Drinks must be carefully positioned in some areas. Like the final beverage aboard The Titanic). Yesterday for bank holiday they had a fairly decent band and a hog roast. Lots of dogs - very welcoming to man's best friend. Fabulous old interior....just a gem. read more

I visited here on 10/12, a Sunday lunchtime with my parents and wife. I booked on the Saturday evening and the lady who took the booking was friendly and helpful even checking to see if they had any white bait in stock which wasn't on the current menu but was on the menu on their web site and my mum really wanted it. We arrived at 1230 while it was stiill quiet but over the next hour it filled up. The modern extension dining area is a little lacking in ambience reminding me of a Little Chef but the tables are quite well spaced out and on damp and chilly winters day it wasn't a bad place to be, temperature inside was spot on (some places can be so drafty) The menu choice was varied with unusually many items I fancied. I had prawn and crayfish cocktail, others had garlic mushrooms, white bait and soup all of which were excellent. Mains were turkey x 2 (from Xmas menu), roast beef from the bargain £12.95 for 3 courses menu and cod & chips all again excellent. Dessertwise I had the crumble which was superb. Portions of all courses were generous. I also sampled an ale brewed on the premises which was a delicious aperitif. Total bill was £75 which in some pubs is what you pay for a meal for 2. A great good value unpretentious pub with locally sourced and produced food for the same price as a chain pub's bought in meals. read more

xmas meal 19 dec had lamb instead of turkey good portion size fab desserts huge very stuffed starters were brill coulnt fault it at all will come again last day in sept 2011 the red hot friday nite went for a meal the garden was packed but the eatery was empty not so good for the pub but were doing a roaring trade any way really smooth house red to accompany my starter of smoked mack pate which was nice no lemon wedge to go aside the plate but the portion was fine already buttered white trianlges of toast fine the mushroom soup was very smokey tasting v unusual fab it was my weding anniv so a quiet table was needed and it is such a nice atmosphere here i do love it lamb shank fabby nice veggies and gravy husb had steak and ale pie brill portion chips a great meal a toffee sundae to finish of with just right stufed to the gills i so recommend you go here for ordinary grub not messed around with just good honest food 3 July 2011 sunday lunch 2 courses for a £10 both had roast beef nothing frozen all homade all the yorky puds and roasties beef although not rare was soft and very tasty even the parsnips nice gravy rave rave rave very god service great little independent pub i love this place dessert was ok custard a bit watery but ok 25 June 2011 fab meal great service salmon and prawn starter huge portion loads of sauce the homemade mushr soup looked delish as did the pate it really did look homeade mains were stilton pie 2 steaks lamb shank wow honey chicken a further steak and K pie with loads of new potatoes my rump was nice and pink chips were chips diane sauce had a tang to it the deserts were a good size orange and choc cheesecake nice whipped cream to accompany my cheeseboard was very good pickle nice slection of cheese and biscs trifle looked really nice coffes with mints nice shiraz to go with the steaks cannot fault this meal at all i would like to try the sunday lunch which will be fairly soon Have been told there is a brewery on site as well how cool is that very good read more
