But enough of the history ... it just seems that with each change of ownership the new entity starts off with a hiss and a roar in all areas of customer service, quality of food and entertainment. And then something happens to change that, whether it's within the owner's control or not. And so it is with the Social. In the beginning the food was something special, photos of incredible plates of food were posted on various social media sites, and people were raving about it (there's something wonderful about the good ol' word of mouth!). My friends and I prided ourselves on being daily guests at The Social but had to walk away after experiencing consistent poor quality food, particularly at lunch time. Don't get me wrong, the ambience is pretty cool and it's a nice place to relax! Today, after a few month's break, we decided to give it another go ... Not overly excited but it was alright. My dining companion tells me the fish n chips were very good, my burger was good. Unfortunately, it wasn't so great that we rushed back to work to rave about our experience! It's my go to order, it's a core of any western dining experience. We were here for about 4-5 hours and we ordered two 'nibble' dishes and then went of the quality of those dishes to order a meal. Let me tell you about the nibbles, a platter of delicious looking bite sized items, ranging from chicken wings to mini hotdog pastries, to black pudding, with cheese fondu, great for 3-4 people. But my favourite was the chicken, tender breast chicken bits, wrapped in a nut/rosemary/sea salt mixture, with manuka honey sauce. It was freaking delicious. After that, several wines and a rousing debate over local body politics we attacked a dinner. I had a steak and due to my long lasting hate affair with tomatoes, I asked for a different sauce and settled on a red wine jus. What followed was their special triple thickness home cut chips, heavily battered (but not oily) onion rings and one of the best steaks I've tasted.
