We built a Classic Custom Homes (CCH) house in the Lake Wisconsin area that was started in the fall…read moreof 2016 and finished in early 2017. We actually live in Maryland, and went back-and-forth to Wisconsin during the design and building of our home. We selected CCH after due diligence involving the opinions of local real estate agents, looking at an in-progress CCH home and asking questions of the future owners, attending the Madison area Parade of Homes, and checking out a completed spec home with Jennie (the builder's wife) in the Kilkenny Farms development just outside of Waunakee. Jennie really helped us decide on CCH, as she just seemed confident, knowledgeable, and above all, credible. The design process went well, as Brandon was both talented and easy to work with. Building a home is never stress-free, and this house was no exception. 2016 was the wettest year in Wisconsin history, and so the job site was extremely muddy. This made everything more difficult, starting with the ground and driveway being too soft for a cement truck to drive on. With the cement truck having to stay on the main road, cement for the foundation was delivered via "pump" system, which delivers cement via a series of long pipes. The "pump" system was a cost overrun, but given the operating environment, it was unavoidable. When the home was completed, it was not difficult to have the few "punch list" items corrected. Our completed house is everything we had hoped for: beautiful, well-made, and energy-efficient. We still live in Maryland, but plan to move to Wisconsin soon. We were away this past winter, and when we got to our CCH house this summer for the first time in about 8-9 months, we had a wet basement. Thus was likely due to a particularly brutal winter, with heavy snow and then a sudden thaw, and compounded by our not being here to keep snow away from the house. With our insurance company ruling that this was caused by "ground water", our claim was dismissed. However, Bryan of CCH has helped out a lot, first sending out a crew to remove wet carpeting, drywall, and trim, and then scheduling a crew for final remediation. Since our house was completed over two years ago, and we were absent for the entire winter, we are more than grateful for the assistance of CCH. Bryan can be blunt, it is true, but in my view he is also honest and helpful. We are at an age where we may never build another house, but if we do, it will be with Classic Custom Homes. Without reservation, I recommend this builder to anyone.

Here are some comments about Classic's results/performance in several key areas: Quality: This may be where Classic made the greatest impression with us. Brian and the entire team set very high standards for quality, and it shows in their results. This includes high quality materials and craftsmanship, and valuable consultation with decisions. On numerous occasions, they helped steer us towards great style and other decisions that will ensure our long term satisfaction. We regularly receive compliments from friends and family about our home, and Classic deserves a lot of the credit. Communication: We had a true sense of partnership with Classic, and they did a great job keeping us updated along the way. Like many people in our situation, we were nervous and had lots of questions. Classic was responsive and consistently put our minds at ease. Cost/Budget: The process of putting together bids and cost estimates was very easy, and Classic provided accuracy and transparency throughout. The final cost was exactly what we expected, and it was less than the initial bids we had received from other builders. Schedule: Classic did a great job adhering to the planned schedule (which they shared with us along the way), and our home was completed in less than 4 months. Not only that, but we needed a place to live during construction (our previous house sold quicker than expected), and Classic provided us with a flexible arrangement at one of their rental properties. Standing Behind Their Work: In any construction project project, there will be things that didn't quite go as planned or that need follow-up work. A good measure of a service provider is how they handle these occurrences. We had a couple minor things (quality of work from a couple of the sub-contractors) that needed attention and Brian took care of everything quickly and at no extra cost. All in all, we were (and still are) extremely satisfied with our decision to have Classic build our home. We would definitely build with them again, and recommend them to anyone we know who is thinking about building a new home.

We had significant communication issues with the designer, who did not seem to understand our vision and did not have any ideas or input beyond the inspiration photos we gave her. She was also slow in responding to all e-mails (average of one week between us contacting her and getting a response) and extremely slow with updates and scheduling walkthroughs, consults, etc. We ended up taking over some of these tasks and scheduling appointments ourselves. We chose Edge as we did not want to serve as our own contractor, but we ended up needing to prod the designer to get things done and/or do them ourselves. Edge did not catch that our original masonry fireplace would be complicated to update. The designer spend much of her time fine-tuning the design on the fireplace, surround, etc. Unfortunately, after we had spend a lot of time making decisions on the fireplace, she finally had the mason look at the photos and was told that removing the existing fireplace surround would be prohibitively expensive and/or impossible. Edge never consulted an architect or engineer on our project despite the fact that the primary change was to be the elimination of a load-bearing wall. As such, we did not receive a usable floorplan. The mock-up we received did not contain any measurements or other specifics we would need to take a plan to another builder to enact. We decided to end our relationship with Edge after three months of working with them and receiving no deliverables or timeline regarding when construction could begin. We asked for a refund on our $1500 design fee due to receiving no design deliverables and were told that Edge felt that fulfilled their side of the design agreement and would thus issue not refund. Would not recommend this company.

The project we did remodeled a huge section of our kitchen and dining room building a second story even. They helped us through every step of the project. From the initial design estimates, to iterating on our ideas and providing feedback, to helping select trims and finish, and then building the entire extension. They were always patient with us when we needed more time to think about the project, but they were always immediately responsive when we needed their input. They are certainly a premium contractor, but for a project of that scale, it was not something that we could have ever hoped to accomplish on our own. It certainly made sense for us to pick a excellent contractor who would be prepared for every scenario. And that is what we got with Frey. With a project of this size, I think common knowledge would cause the average person to assume that there would be substantial delays and setbacks. but the entire time we worked with Frey, there from the day they broke ground to the day it was done, they didn't slip a single deadline. Their staff was always incredibly professional. The subcontractors that they worked with were top notch. You could tell that the people who were here working on our home really cared about the project and wanted to make it good and make it right, and they would redo parts of it if they weren't done correctly. we really appreciated the attention to detail. There were many times when I thought that they went above and beyond to help make the remodeling project go smoothly. Notably, they helped move all of our appliances and counter surfaces into our living room so that we could continue to live out of our living room while our entire kitchen was being demoed and remodeled. It wasn't work that they needed to do, but they were more than happy to help. If we ever needed to do another large scale remodeling project, they would be the first people we would call.

When I asked him if he could've made a mistake, mixing up our project with that of a much larger house, Zach Peterson ghosted us. Then it all fell apart -- weeding cost $75 per person hour, and weeds were left everywhere. When we called about it, they came to look and said all the weeds must have grown back in the time it took them to get out to see it. Then our fall cleanup -- clocking in at $2400 -- left leaves everywhere and plants untrimmed. When we asked for them to do the job properly, they came out, said it was too windy and that must have blown the neighbors leaves into our yard, declined to do more, declined to acknowledge they could have done better, and knocked some money off the bill. So it only cost us $1600 to do a job we could have done ourselves in a couple of hours. Don't waste your money here -- you'll waste a lot of it.

The planning and installation went well even though it was a rainy season and the installation got delayed until November 2019. This spring after waiting all winter, I was eager to install some plants as the rock work looked great. One thing I didn't anticipate is that previous to their work I had a layer of black plastic down to kill weeds (plastic had been in place at least 20 months). Even though there were some holes in the plastic the soil was now microbe and invertebrate poor because of the solarization. I reached out to Avant to consult and Becky has been very responsive and helpful in working with me with plans to amend the soil. So even after Avant's project was complete they continue to be supportive and responsive in making sure their customer is satisfied and the garden is healthy. Thanks AVANT!
