One of the worst dining experiences I've had in a while. Our group was basically ignored the entire time we were there. At one point they gave the food I ordered to another table, and when we pointed that out, they took it AWAY from them, brought it into the kitchen, and then brought it back out to us. Seriously? My friend had a back and forth with the woman at the counter who didn't even bother to write our order down, where she asked for a cappuccino 3 times and the woman still gave her a latte. We waited over an hour for our food, and it was either wrong, or almost inedible, for each one. Only one person enjoyed their food... it was a grilled cheese. Pretty hard to mess up. Truly a gem of delicious baked goods. During the pandemic, I thought of this place often and hoped Brendal (owner) was healthy and ready to resume business, and she has to my heart's content. I have plenty of allergies, so baked goods are usually not something I can safely eat; nonetheless, Brendal always has something marvelous for me. Today, I'm going home with brownies, flourless chocolate cake, and a soy flour tart that's super delicious. While there, I ordered a kale tomato frittata and ice coffee that made my Fort Lee, NJ to Irvington journey worthwhile. I find myself returning again and again to this delicious little bakery. It creates delicious pastries of all sorts -- most of them are gluten free. Way too expensive for the quality of food. Prices aren't listed on the menu. Each time I've gone, I've been prompted to pay without being told my total. For over $20, their avocado toast was one piece of cold untoasted bread, a quarter avocado (not mashed and spread, just placed on the bread), a cold, grey scrambled egg on top, and 2 blackberries on the side. Honestly if I can give this place 0 stars I really would. My fiancé and I came in to get a drink and wait for the train station. We order two smoothies which was about 30 dollars. My fiancé went to use the rest room and I sat down at the pictured table. The waitress comes over and says to me " I am going to give you a different seat because this seat is very delicate." She was hinting at the fact that my fiancé was ok heavy to sit in this seat. We left because I was so upset. I called to speak to the manager, the same customer representative answered. I asked if she was the manager and she refused to answer my question and kept asking "can I help you" as if to rush me off of the phone. Let's start with the owner, "Cruella", as other Yelpers are calling her...she is just SO RUDE, incredibly unprofessional, handles food with her bare hands and speaks to everybody in a nasty, condescending tone. We've been to Red Barn a number of times, always hoping that things will improve with some targeted feedback - but it never happened. Fundamentally, the food is bad. As a bakery, they should excel at making baked goods, but they are consistently bad - poor texture, almost sandy, coupled with bad flavors. My newborn has several food allergies forcing my wife (who breast feeds) to adopt a vegan diet as well avoiding all oats/grains. Now I know that's a tall order for any restaurant or bakery but when my wife asked what if anything they had that was vegan and didn't contain oats the woman behind the counter at red barn looked at her like she had ten heads, when my wife further explain her situation the woman in essence related "oh, the child is able to eat??" I feel like everyone in Irvington loves this place, and Martha Stewart does too, but personally I'm not sold. My main beef with it is that it's so pricey. Unsuspecting family visitors and first timers come in and are bowled over when they pay $17 for a scone, small bag of 4 broken cookies, and an iced coffee... Or the time my mother bought 4 muffins and one or two other small pastries and paid $30. I totally see the appeal- local ingredients, healthy bakery treats, gluten free options, organic, etc... Everything I've had seems like it is going to be marvelous, until you realize it's how dry or weird the texture is...the scones are SO dry that you feel like a cow chewing grass. Even those little $7 cookie bags, which seem like they're the gluten free kind of Tate's, end up chewy- and those we wanted crispy and dry, right!? The service can be excruciatingly slow, and the iced coffee comes in a PAPER CUP (what!!!). It tastes like a very dark roast that's been single-brewed and put into the refridgerator (yuk). No matter what you say, they always fill it to the brim, so you're bound to spill it all over their quaint shop and feel like an asshole. We stumbled on Red Barn Bakery when we brought our new baby out for a day trip, eager to let him breath the slightly cleaner air of suburban New York, if only for an afternoon. Red Barn was the only thing open by 4 p.m. Sunday - a sort of important commentary on the differences between city living and living in even an inner suburb. In any event, the extremely friendly staff provided us with two obviously house-made soups, a hearty lentil and carrot and a rich leek, a crusty and flavorful (although not very authentic) baguette and a bowl of tasty olive oil. Much happier for having eaten, we nabbed one of Red Barn's excellent apple galettes, which tasted much as if I had made it myself (that's a compliment) and headed for the nearby park. The local bees apparently thought the galette was as good as we did, because we ate it in fits and starts, swatting away our bumble-friends in between bites. In NYC, I would probably rate Red Barn around 3 stars. But the staff is so friendly, the galette so good, and Red Barn so much more open than everyone else in Irvington that 4 is justified. The bakery case here is beautiful and in appreciate the organic ingredients. But the customer service is horrible. Today's interaction: "do you have iced tea?" "No I have iced coffee." Then it turns out that the tea just wasn't ready and she could make it, she just wasn't offering. Coffee is totally different from tea - they are not substitutes of each other. There was no effort to explore options to make the customer happy. If you are charging $5+ dollars for small baked goods, please at least do it with a smile. I understand Covid times have made it difficult for small businesses. But why is it that other bakeries seem to have it together and not this place? Granted they may not have a window where you can order from and you cannot enter the store. But they can still develop a system whereby you call the order in, they take the order down and they come out minutes later with the coffee and scone. I'm so glad Red Barn Bakery opened in Irvington. It is a great place to grab coffee and a tasty baked good on my way to the train. They have scones, muffins, and this thing called a Breakfast Cookie which is amazing. It has oatmeal, coconut, raisins, almonds, papaya, and mango! I've also had their apple galette (I brought it to a dinner party for desert) it was terrific. They have vegetable tarts too. I've seen mushroom, beets, spinach, and asparagus so far. I love that everything is organic, there are gluten free options (which is great for my sister) and they support local farms and community shared agriculture. Plus, if/when you go in, they tend to have samples of their new items to taste! You should stop in and try something. Everything i've had has been delicious so far! read more

So I've been scoping this place out for a little while and dancing back and forth between four and five stars, but I think someplace that I plan on getting to at least once a week or two like an addict proclaiming it my cheat day eats and mine and my mom's Downton Abbey sweets - that's gotta be a five star bakery. So yes, I eat Paleo now, but I firmly believe in cheat day, which I need to be gluten free and my little one absolutely has to eat gluten free and now my brother has jumped on board. So when we saw some delicious IG photos of a donut muffin and a gluten free cheesecake, we knew which river town we were hitting next cheat day. I had read all the reviews ahead of time so we were prepared for awful service but when we went in we said we needed gluten free stuff and Randell, the owner (yes, that's her actual name people) showed us everything that was gluten free, gave us a minute and someone else who was also absolutely lovely took our order and boxed up two huge boxes (7 people in the house with a sweet tooth) of goodies. We paid a hefty price, left a little stunned, but not at all down. We tried the carrot cake which was very good, brownies which are insanely fudgey (oh and if you warm them up they are divine), donut muffins (my mom's vice), flourless chocolate cake that the little one loved, lemon tarts that were so smooth with just the slightest tart edge with a nice creamy balance and gluten free macaroni and cheese that thrilled both my brother and the little one. My favorite thing of all though was the cashew cardamom macaron. Now I had sworn off macarons for a while, but these are amazing. The flavor is unlike any I've had before and they are quite a generous size. My next visit was the following Sunday at about two minutes to closing, surely that would make the young woman behind the counter rude, but no. She boxed up everything I asked for, this time there were chai macarons that were also insanely delicious and I decided to try the vanilla as well as raspberry - they don't disappoint, and got a few more of the same baked goods and a whoopie pie for the little one. This trend continues for weeks. Delicious cheesecakes, highly addictive macarons (even the pistachio puts other pistachios to shame) and yesterday the owner introduced herself to my brother and I. She was incredibly pleasant and smiling. My brother and I can be a little on the goofy side, but I told her about my macaron addiction and she explained how into the macarons she is, grinding the almonds herself and everything and it really shows in the flavor. She even told me they can do a macaron cake for special occasions, something to keep in mind for sure because these things are not your typical macarons and those are not easy to find outside of the city. But most surprising was that this woman was nothing like the reviews that I've seen on here. I can only assume that people have caught the staff at a busy time, or perhaps have not been so nice themselves. I am of course a bit sympathetic having worked in the food service industry. However I look forward to doing continued business with Red Barn as with my other favorite gluten free places. Now two things I will address as my issues that had me agonize between four and five stars for so long. A while ago I knocked babycakes pretty hard (the name has now changed) for calling itself a gluten free bakery but having things in the same case that are gluten free and things that are made with spelt, which were immediately cross contaminated. Everything at Red Barn is in the open air next to each other, although neatly organized and separated between what is gluten free and what is not. HOWEVER Red Barn does not call itself a gluten free bakery, as a matter of fact on it's website it says "gluten free and vegan friendly" and that it is. My little one who is usually very sensitive to cross contamination has not as of yet had a reaction to anything from here, but I suggest if you are highly, highly sensitive you do keep this in mind. The other thing that threw me the first one or two times was the price. However, Red Barn is making a product that is not easily found elsewhere and it's something to keep in mind. Yes, there is another gluten free bakery in another river town that I also love but they are dairy free and they carry completely different products - apples and oranges. So you are paying for a unique product and organic ingredients which is a huge deal, because non organic stuff is just poison lol. Oh and as an aside, as far as someone getting mold in their Apple roll up, that's happened to me with organic baked goods from the farmer's market in the city, I always check stuff that has fruit in it as it's prone to growing mold very quickly. Bottom line, I need to have less cheat days, but I don't think I'm breaking up with Red Barn any time soon lol. read more

Friendly staff. The place is cozy and quaint. I love how the food is organic and healthy. When you walk in, you're just mesmerized by all of the food that is laid out on display. The savory tarts (frittatas) look AMAZING. What is the difference between a frittata and a quiche? I should have asked, since I mistakenly called them quiches. Anyway, I tried the morning cookie, a morning muffin, and a coffee. The coffee that they serve is really smooth, and not bitter at all. It's a nice medium flavored coffee that goes perfectly with their pastries. The muffin is hearty and yummy. The cookie is out of this world. I ate only 1/2 of it for breakfast today because it is HUGE! It reminds me of the cookies from Levain Bakery. This organic Sayulita breakfast cookie--named after a Mexican surf town that's brimming with sunshine, where papaya and mango are prevalent and scrumptious--is "best" for three reasons: it's so big it can last for days; it's good for you, prepared with unbromated, unbleached flour, brown cane sugar, oatmeal, almonds, raisins, coconut, banana, vanilla, salt, and, of course, papaya and mango. It is probably one of the best hearty cookies that i have ever tasted. It is sweet, yet not too sweet like your typical cookies. It actually tastes healthy. It's chock full of fruits, and nuts. I was welcomed by the outstanding hostess, waitress, cook?, coffee maker, and I'm sure a lot more. The poor girl was running around doing ten jobs at once! I think that's just madness..She should either get a raise or maybe they should hire more help. She helped me as best as she could but I couldn't help but feel bad for her. If you come here please be polite and patient with Sabrina (I think thats what her name was) as there is only one of her. Other than the lack of staff on deck, the food and coffee was yummy. Very tasty high quality products made from locally sourced ingredients. Right off the bat I am going to agree with other reviewers that yes, this place is expensive. A tart and two scones ran me $35. While it does come with the territory of being artisinal products made with local ingredients in a suburb north of New York City, there is minor sticker shock at the register. In the end it is worth every penny. That being said..... The cheddar kale scones are absolutely delicious. They can not be over-hyped. The scone is more like a really great biscuit than a scone. Light, fluffy, not greasy, yet moist. Randell Dodge really kills it here with the scone, and it alone would be worth a drive from the city. The cheddar is just enough. Just enough that you think it could use a little more but not so much that it turns it into a greasy cheesy mess and it lets the scone be the main attraction. A little kale adds a nice earthy note to the whole package. The kale, chevre, mini heirloom tart is just as good. The whole wheat tart crust is beautiful. The egg custard is light and airy and melts in your mouth like cotton candy. The crust and custard are the star here as well, with the chevre, kale and tomato there to add some layers of flavor. Although expensive, don't miss the scone. I hope a cookbook is in the works. read more
