Excellent, comprehensive, but approachable and easy to work with; able to handle all levels of…read moreprojects, from solo demos to large broadcast quality recording & mixing. A prominent recording artist/performer introduced me to Hilltop about 2010 and I've been traveling all the way from Texas to record at there every 2-3 years since, most recently in April-May, 2018. We (session musicians, producer and I) have completed a number of multi-song, multi-musician recording and mixing projects there over the years. Hilltop's part in that work has exceeded my expectations every time. The "A-list" performers and songwriters who have recorded there are legion (it's the oldest continuously-operating studio in Nashville), but they've always been friendly and helpful to me, a relatively small-time indie, and never rushed or condescending; I get the feeling that I'm valued just as much as the "big guys." John Nicholson, the manager and chief engineer is extremely competent (he also does on-site sound for well-known touring performers), but laid back and easy to work with for both recording and mixing. There are two main studios. "A" is the larger, with a drum room with full kit, two other isolation rooms, a multi-station main room with grand piano & B-3, and 128-track (I think) capability. "B," has two smaller isolated studios and a smaller (but still big) board, ideal for less expensive solos, post-production vocals & fills, etc. There are comfortable lounges for breaks and plenty of room for observers. The computer system is huge and redundant, filling its own room. Access is easy: little traffic, lots of parking.

During the piano move, the two movers seemed to struggle a bit moving the instrument (just an upright spinet) 30 minutes down the road but didn't end up damaging anything--home or piano. You do need to be upfront about your move logistics so that Fretter's can staff and charge appropriately: length of sidewalk, number of stairs, etc. Rick is no-frills. Like other reviewers have noted, his communication style is direct. He has a bag of tools ready for anything in his early 2000s minivan. His tuning fork and his ear don't lie. He has years of experience leading to successful repairs and tunings no matter your piano brand. Rick's provided realistic advice to me on frequency of tuning and if maintenance is worth the cost, based on my specific instrument that I acquired from Facebook marketplace. I've not been to the physical location in East Nashville in Inglewood.
