I've been coming to this place for over 20 years, even though it is a trek and I have a few good stores near me, Record Outlet always seems to have stuff that the other stores don't. I was looking for a copy of MC5 "Kick Out the Jams" for over a year, and I found it within 30 seconds of walking in! They may be a bit pricy, but it is worth it to find those gems that you just can't get at other record stores. And the staff has great taste in music, they play obscure stuff and I often discover new artists when I visit. They are knowledgeable and helpful and pleasant. Highly recommend this place for anyone who is looking for that old school record store vibe... you won't regret it! read more

I bought my first record player about 13 years ago. I had my heart set on a vintage player that I saw l but I had no idea what I was getting into, so I went to record outlet, met the owner KC, got his opinion, and the rest is history. I'my proud of how much my collection has grown quite a bit. Many pieces from my collection is from record outlet. I lived around the corner for about 8 years so my daughter and I would walk down there on the weekends to see what they had. I always found something when I went in there, and I still do! KC clearly has a passion for his work. He has helped me throughout the years with my set up, and any questions that I have. He is always so helpful and kind. The Record Outlet is dirty and disorganized. I feel like it would be a living nightmare for anyone with asthma to even walk through the door. The albums besides the rock albums and new ones are treated with so much disrespect that its sad to see. Feels more like I'm in a goodwill in the hood in LA, I've seen records treated better there in fact. Check out his library book case of Jazz records he has to left of the back door to see what I mean. Or try out the shitty ass listening station, that must be a joke. Its like they went to the thrift store and picked up the first headphones and turntables they saw. Terrible condition and experience for customer. Every record and item is overpriced by at least 5 to 10$ more then Gradys Record Refuge in Ventura, for absolutely no reason. Overall this place is about 5x worse than Gradys, go there instead. The owner here is a stuffy snot head who has never interacted with any of his customers while I'm there. From what i can tell he doesn't even inspect the quality of the vinyl, just slaps a price tag he thinks is good on there. I was gonna give 2 stars because of the nice younger employees he hires there who I have no problem with, but after seeing some of the responses to the other poor reviews, you bitter people who own this place can go fok yourself. Clean your store its disgusting. Dont treat records like shit and you won't get a review like this. read more

Record outlet is the only thing cool about Thousand Oaks. I remember going to record outlet maybe 1999 and buying Led Zeppelin b sides and John Paul Jones solo albums after my bass lessons at instrumental music. ( shout out to mike bear and Dave bates ) Every time I walk in there they're playing Syd Barrett, Frank Zappa or something off the wall. More bad customer service... Inappropriate and rude encounter with presumed owner- older man in the shop who typically works in the back. When asking this gentleman about why a specific record didn't play correctly on a portable record player he instructed us to "take it out the back and shoot it." After this highly inappropriate comment I looked to the young woman working the counter who was visibly taken back with this man's comment as she raised her eyebrows and avoided gaze whilst looking at the ground, yet said nothing to correct him. After telling us to shoot our portable record player with the utmost snob and disdain he told us these portable record players are for "the children of baby boomers who want to play their parents old records" Keep in mind his opinions were unprompted. He proceeded to ask "did you get it as a Christmas gift" to which we responded yes and he responded with "hmmm can you like return it? You'll want to return it" how uncomfortable we felt. When we decided to tolerate his behavior one more time we asked politely which records in the store he thought we would be able to play, to which he went over to the box of free records on the ground by the front of the store, kicked them (the actual records were kicked, not the container) and said "maybe these" Please check yourself on your rude and inappropriate behavior. Do not for a moment continue to assume that we or anyone else can afford your $1000s worth of premium record players on the market. Please check your opinions at the door and know that places like these thrive on reviews and word of mouth. If this review does anything, it will warn people of the behavior of the employees as a signal to take their business elsewhere if they can. read more

Love this place! When my record needle broke recently, I had no idea where to find a replacement, or what replacement I even needed to get. My dad turned me to this store, saying he had bought his replacement needles here and that the guy who owns the store always knows exactly what is needed. Definitely really knowledgeable! He knew exactly what I needed. While I didn't get to meet him, I did deal with two women who were lovely--excellent service. I left my broken needle at the store and got a call from him just a couple days later, and they had the needle I needed! The store itself is also really neat! A huge selection with great prices. I'm definitely going to return to buy a couple records soon. I also love the little free section. When you buy something, you're allowed to take one item from the free section as a sign of the store's gratitude for your business. If that doesn't say they value the customer, I don't know what else does. Highly recommend! read more

WAS NOT WELCOMING I went in to hoping to trade in cds .when I walked in the owner and his son were straight to the point not even a hello or welcome in. The owner proceeded to look through my cd collection without even acknowledging me and not even asking if I wanted a trade in or cash. As he finished he pulled seven cds and assumed I only wanted cash. Moreover this was my first time selling/trading in cds and would have liked it if he explained his policies and my options.I have spent a lot of money at this store but it's safe to say I will not be going back and did not feel respected.he's breath stunk and his sons ass crack was out the whole time we were there. read more

Worst customer service ever! I came here with my friend and his daughter because he wanted to pick up a few records. He had been before and really liked this place. As we were looking around, his daughter started taking some of those label/dividers out of their spot and putting it somewhere else. She's 3 years old and was behaving like most kids do, just playing and having a little fun. I tried to move back the dividers as she was moving them but she was a lot quicker than me! The lady working there saw and asked for her to stop doing that. I apologized and told her I was putting them back. My friend heard her say that I was a bad mother letting my kid do that. She came over and was really angry, saying that we were messing up all the hard work she took to set them up. My friend also apologized and said he was planning on making a few purchases. She said that she had the right to refuse service and asked us to leave. First off, these dividers are in alphabetical order and can easily to be fixed in a few minutes. There were no other customers in the store so its not like she was super busy! Secondly, this sweet little girl is 3 and she wasn't trying to cause any trouble. It's not like we were letting her run wild knocking things over and breaking stuff. These were freakin dividers! We left extremely appalled by her attitude and behavior. It seems like such a cool shop with awesome records but its been totally tainted by this woman's bitter and ugly attitude. read more

Let me preface this review by stating that I'm not a "collector" in the way that most people who probably shop at record stores are collectors... I buy vinyl that I want to listen to, but don't have the money to buy every album that I would like to own. However, I have found several things that I have been looking for in this great little shop. The albums are usually in the $4-5 range, except for new items of course. I have bought some Gordon Lightfoot, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Cat Stevens, Beatles, amongst a few others. I've had lots of luck finding classic Christmas albums lately, like Ella Fitzgerald, Bing Crosby, Burl Ives and Nat King Cole. The guy who works here is very helpful and when I've asked about particular albums, he's been able to check their extra stock and has found some for me. And what's with the name-calling and criticizing a guy who works in a record store for being too chill? Isn't that kinda like saying "That barista at Starbucks was just too hyper!" I love this little store, it's great for a kinda-collector like me. And I'm thrilled it's in my town. We might not have any indie bookstores in TO, but at least we have Record Outlet. read more

Don't waste your time. Terrible customer service and rude owner. Went in to sell CDs. Was left waiting for a long time while the owner had a personal conversation with a friend. No greeting, introduction, 'let me see if there is anything I'd take', 'thanks for stopping in'. He quickly scanned my box and just said, "Nothing. I would try Goodwill." No thanks, I'll try a business that values customers. Will not be returning to buy or sell. read more

This is a small little record store selling mostly used but also some new records, CDs, DVDs, blue rays and other random stuff. Everything is labeled and organized well, they have a decent selection and though I only come by here a few times a year, I always find something to take home with me. The employees have always been friendly and you get to pick a free record out of a bin by the door with every purchase. While theres hardly ever anything good in it, theres usually one or two things in there that make me laugh and laughing is good. My only complaint about this place is the records are JAM PACKED together. It makes it almost impossible in some places to sort through them and well, if you can't easily dig through the records, you could miss something fantastic and I hate knowing I might be missing something. read more

This little, out-of-the-way shop has become one of my favorite record stores in LA. Large "new arrivals" area (don't miss the stacks on the floor) for that random dig when you arrive. Carefully organized rock-pop A-Z, and nice specialty sections (eg tons of stereo test & demonstration records; kids' records, lounge/exotica). Other sections for jazz and R&B. A lot of country and pop vocals, but these are tucked inobtrusively away. Pricing: Incredibly cheap for this day and age. The store seems resolved to not charge over $8 a record; most are between $4-$7. (A beautiful copy of Guns & Roses G'n'R Lies was $15.) I grabbed a pristine Elvis "The Other Sides" 4xLP box set for $8. Condition: Good but not great. In Goldmine terms covers range from G+ to VG and vinyl from VG to VG+. Not a lot of NM's in here but certainly there are some. Genres: Overwhelmingly classic rock from 60s and 70s, but honestly? A little of everything. New Arrivals is chock full of goodness; mostly titles you own or would like to; virtually no thrift-store crap (Barbra, Neil, Herb, etc.). Snagged a Violent Femmes debut for $5-7 and a Velvet Underground debut (repress with no gatefold) also $7, both in terrific shape. Found a Doug Leedy Moog Christmas album I've really wanted for $4. What you won't find: Incredibly rare records, or all items in mint condition. This doesn't cater to the collector's market the way Amoeba, Rockaway, and Atomic do (though all those guys have cheaper records, too). They don't have wall items. Though you still may find those Beatles, Hendrix, Zep, and Floyd albums you want thrown casually in new arrivals. if the 101 is kind, it's a pretty quick trip from central LA. If the place was any closer, it'd be brutally picked over (or they'd pay higher rent and charge higher prices). I've been here 3-4 times and every time I come away with a stack of stuff. Not sure how this place gets such high reviews. I'm a huge vinyl collector and was stoked on going to this store since it's in the town my girlfriend grew up in. What a let down. The cave man staff member (hopefully not the owner) that crept out from hibernation when I walked in was there......moped out..........monotone hello........back to hiding in the back.......cool, thanks! Terrible records. I've never seen so many jackets with seam splits in my entire life...with price tags on them....seriously? A few new records here and there of common titles. Don't waste your time unless you have nothing better to do or don't have gas money to drive somehwere worthwhile. I'm shocked this place is still in business. read more

One of the best costumer service experiences I have ever had. I only had the slightest worry that the cassettes i was buying would be warped or damaged (I've had bad experiences buying used cassettes), but the girl at the front offered without me even asking to test all the tapes for me! She played them over the speakers in the store and assured any doubts I had!! Friendly, helpful and informative, an all around incredible employee. Honestly amazing. For a shop this small, (and it is a wee one), the selection is not bad at all. The stock on hand is mostly used vinyl and CDs, along with some hardware - there were several turntables on sale at reasonable prices ($50-$70). It's easy to jam a small shop full of second-hand crap, but I liked, owned, or generally approved of the majority of what I saw while flipping through the stacks of vinyl. This tells me the buyer(s) have taste. I didn't have time to really look through the CDs on my visit. I bought a new pressing of Project Mersh, and the price was $10, which is a very reasonable markup. You'd easily be asked to pay $14-$15 (or more) for the same record at a lot of shops I've visited. Even the Amazon.com price is higher. Prices on used vinyl were also reasonable. The owner is a friendly guy, didn't catch his name, but he did offer me a free used record out of a special little bin behind the counter, which was nice. I spotted some cassettes and even some 8-tracks (I can't imagine what anyone does with 8-tracks these days... I guess they have some nostalgic and/or ironic value). Given the choices in record shops I have between Ventura (near where I live) and L.A. (where I work), I probably won't be stopping by all that often, but this place is a God-send for anyone living in Thousand Oaks. Great store! and a lot of records in a smaller store...I will often find what I am looking for and for a good price. Sure, not as big as Amoeba but will have some of those hard to find records for a decent price where Amoeba charges a lot more. Plus Amoeba is too far to go. A local shop that has been around for 20 years. They sell used and new vinyl, cd's 8-track, cassettes, movies and a lot more. Don't forget the free bin! You can get new belts and needles here as well. They usually have what you need in stock. The employees are very knowledgable and friendly. KC, the owner, does a great job fixing tables and stereos too! I have spent soooo much time and money at this store! I am sad that i had to move to az but i always call up to see what came in and stop by at least twice when i visit home. I never leave there without spending money. I can always find something there i want or need. I have been to most the other shops in the area (Salzers, Grady's record refuge (another great store), american pie records, and a few in SB and SFV and hollywood) but i will always come back to Record Outlet over the others.
