This was an awkward experience. I had a 10am massage appointment. I walked in and was greeted by an older lady who spoke limited English. The place was empty with only her. I asked if there was someone else and she said the other person is sleeping in...weird. I ended up speaking mandarin so communication could be clear. First she asked me to pay before receiving service, then pressured me to pay in cash instead of card saying that it's not worth it to pay by card because of the extra credit card fee. Then she asked for a tip before I even got the massage. I gave $5 and she said "wow that's not very much" in mandarin. Then she proceeded to give me the massage which just felt like she was rubbing me with oil. She said she was going to use a particular oil that was more expensive and kept saying it's a special oil and she only uses it on special guests. Then asked for more tip at the end. I was uncomfortable the entire time given the social interaction with her and the massage was terrible. It was a big mistake to select this establishment for 2 major reasons: 1) Upon entering, the odor of the food was overwhelming. Not the smells I was looking for in a relaxing environment. But I was already in and committed. 2) The main lady then looked me up and down and asked me to pay in advance of the service. This is not a normal practice for me and she clearly analyzed me to not be worthy of their standard practice. I was thoroughly dissatisfied as she refused to proceed without my prepayment, so I left. I paid upfront for a "deep tissue massage - that's suppose to be include with stones " all I got was a hand rubbing back and forth with oil - barley a massage! The hot stones just sat on my back on a towel until I had to task the last 3 minutes of the massage if she was going to use them . The staff was incredibly friendly, professional, and prompt - we walked in and were immediately escorted back to the room and the massage began just a few moments later. It is fairly no-frills but that's a great thing as it's all about the actual massage. The beds and pillows were comfortable and just the right temperature. The room was dark without being too dark. And the massage itself was just phenomenal. I've had a fair number of body massages, some at spas at high-end hotels, and this blows all of them away. Can't say enough about how great this was! I think it's unfair to hold this business up to the same standards as the bougie, fancy spas we're all familiar with. As a no-frills, clean and affordable option this is hands down my favorite place. I have the worst knots in my neck, shoulders and back, and after years of expensive Rittenhouse area massages, Recharge Spa was the only one who came close to removing them. The employees barely speak English but that didn't bother me like other guests. I just pointed at what I needed on the list of services, and we understood each other completely! Sometimes there isn't any music, sometimes there is but at the end of the day that didn't matter to me as long as I received a good massage. Upside: they also offer a frequent member card. I got a tip from a friend that Recharge was an amazing place. She said her and her boyfriend go all the time and that it was the best massage he's ever had (and he gets massages a lot). I've had a lot of massages in the past couple years too, so I had to check it out. I called and asked what time they closed and the man said 8pm. I asked if we could get a couples massage tonight. And he said yes, what time? I asked for 730 because I still needed to have dinner. He had no problem scheduling us for an hour, even though he told me they closed at 8. When we walked in, we were greeted by Kim and Jin. They asked if we had called about the massages and we said yes. Then Kim lead us to the cutest room with two tables, a sheet hung from the ceiling that divided the room in half, exposed brick, and very nice lighting. Right from the beginning when I first laid down, I was relaxed. The table was heated and super comfy. Kim and Jin knocked and came in. Then, I had the best massage of my life. He worked on my knots, stretched my hips, and did a number on my butt. People always underestimate the need for a good butt massage. An hour later, we looked at each other with epic euphoric looks on our faces and a strong reluctance to get off the table. I told my boyfriend that I live here now and he understood. Decided to try Recharge for a Deep Tissue couples massage with my boyfriend since the prices are decent compared to other places. The massage wasn't terrible but definitely wasn't terrific either. The reason I will not be returning: -Each time the front door rang, one of the women stepped out of the room to greet the people who walked in, which disrupted the relaxing/isolated part of the massage that I value. -Due to the disruptions, I felt a $20 tip for $150 service was sufficient. The masseuse told me it was "20% MANDATORY" tip for the Deep Tissue service. On principle, being told of a mandatory term that was never indicated until I was handed my credit card receipt is absurd. If there is a mandatory policy of tipping, it needs to be explained prior and indicated on their price board prior to the massage being given. read more

I originally gave this place a honest 5-star review, but after my latest visit, that had to be changed. After being a regular customer of Recharge Spa for nearly 3 years (every month, a few couples massages, and Tons of recommendations), it has unfortunately significantly dropped in quality, atmosphere, and service. I had to stop going March of 2017 once I couldn't lay on my stomach anymore due to pregnancy, but couldn't wait to get back to my masseuse Linda once able to again. Well, Linda is no longer there. Still, no biggie. I was going to this place before she worked there, and still loved it. HOWEVER, this last visit, the table wasn't setup the same (Some weird cloth over the normal white sheet--sanitation purposes perhaps?); there was a foul smell that I thought would eventually go away; no music was played; and last but not least, the massage was AWFUL. The woman who serviced me was rubbing my back super hard, rather than massaging me. I actually had to tell her to stop this "technique" as it felt as if she were trying to give me a rug burn! And when she did massage, her strokes were too fast and didn't feel focused. She used her forearms rather than her hands mostly. Once the massage was over, she took a too wet warm towel to wipe the oil off my body in a very careless matter. I had to shower once I got home. Positive note: When I told the masseuse of a crick on my left shoulder/neck, she did work it out. Also, they still give out little bottles of water upon completion of your massage. Amazing massage for good price. I am a recent NYC transplant to the area, so I'm used to some pretty good massages in new york city. I stopped in here to check it out and was very surprised. It was one of the best massages I have ever had. Don't get me wrong, its very much a "no frills" place, but the quality of the massage you receive is top notch. My reviews are mixed because I have been here a handful of times but have had different experiences each time. The most recent time is what I will talk about. First off, for the price based on other prices in the area, it is "okay" my fiancé and I did a couples massage as we usually do, it is supposed to be relaxing and stress relieving but the two ladies spoke the entire 60 minutes with eCh other in Vietnamese, seeming to be gossiping and laughing loudly. In addition anytime the front door opens bells ring and one of the two have to leave the room to greet them. The massage it self was with someone I've never had before. It was odd. She was very soft in places that need pressure like the back and shoulders yet very hard on places that don't even have muscle, like my breast bone and NOSE! My nose hurts so bad the next day as if it were punched. Neither of us got feet done. Time was called right at the hour, even though we started late. My fiancé had a much better experience. He was even walked in and wants to request his lady the next time. He was pleased with the pressure and was not massaged in the odd places I was. Hence the 3 stars. read more

This was seriously the best deep tissue massage I ever had. At first when you walk in, it looks sketchy because it is insanely tiny and doesn't really look like much of a spa. There is no "spa" music, no spa scents, no water fountain, nothing! But then you enter your massage room and boom! Magic happens. It was the first time having a man masseuse and honestly, he was the best ever! I am in constant pain all of the time and like most people carry most of my stress in my shoulders. He really paid close attention to ever inch of my body. He did not rush any area and went straight for the knots with out any direction from myself. And then at the end he stretched ever limb of mine. At first I was skeptical of this "stretching" because I have never been "stretched" during a massage. But afterwards I felt so light, so limber, so refreshed. After the massage was over he left me warm and toasty under a heated blanket and rested on head on a pillow, smiled and said "rest a while you deserve it". And so I did! Customer service, the massage itself, everything was perfect. They even give you a 10% off coupon to use on your next visit, which I will definitely be using very soon! read more

If I could give negative stars for my experience here I would. I went here with a friend to get a massage for my birthday. The masseuse asked if we were getting deep tissue or Swedish massage. I was hesitant to get the deep tissue massage because I have heard they can sometimes hurt, but I was assured that it would not. This is where I should've listened to my gut. This was my first mistake...This was the most painful massage I have ever received. I have gotten massages before at places like Hand and Stone and they have never felt like this. It was almost unbearable. My masseuse never asked if the pressure was ok and I did not speak up for myself (mistake number two). After the massage, I rejoined my friend and asked how hers was bc I know I can be sensitive sometimes. She agreed this was the most painful massage she's ever had and did not enjoy it at all. Upon paying, my friend left her masseuse a tip that was slightly under 20% and her masseuse confronted her and told her she must leave a 20% tip. I was appalled as I have worked in the service industry many years and have never seen anyone demand a higher tip. My friend ended up leaving her the $2 difference. To my knowledge a tip is based on the service you receive, not determined by the person receiving the tip. It seemed extremely unprofessional to me. As the day went on my back became more and more painful. When I finally looked in the mirror I had bruising and broken blood vessels all up and down my back. I went back the very next day to let them know what happened. They asked me to show them my back which I did. The one masseuse gasped when she saw my back while the other lady who had worked on my friend yesterday tried to explain that this was normal. I told her I've had many massages before and have never received bruising from a massage, let alone the extent to which my back was bruised and that I was really upset. The lady continued to laugh and tell me this was normal and that it would go away. I never even received an apology. I told her that at the very least in the future she should inform people before they decide to get a massage what it will feel like bc I was told it was not going to hurt, and it left bruises on my body. My intent on leaving this review is just to make people aware before going here what you are in store for bc the people that work here clearly don't care. It took a bit to convince her that I really didn't want to pay for an upgrade but in the end it ended up in my favor a bit as I got a full body 30 minute massage instead of a chair massage. The massage was pretty good and afterword I felt nice and loose. This place is a definitely a no frills massage parlor. We were in the side room and any time someone walked in it was very noisy and took away from the experience. Just finished a deep tissue and hot stone couples massage and am left unimpressed for a number of reasons. Ambiance - this is NOT a fancy spa by any means (which is fine and the prices reflect that and are fair). However, the entire massage the two ladies are speaking in their language to each other, making it completely unrelaxing! Massage - the massage itself had ups and downs. The hot stone was HOT to the point where I'd squirm a bit with the temperature on my bare skin. Also, I kept my underwear on for sanitary reasons but my masseuse just pulled them down during the massage and my bare ass was just out it was a bit uncomfortable and caught me off guard a bit. Tip - this was the icing on the cake and the main reason I WILL NOT RETURN. The total was $150. We were planning to leave $20 as tip in cash because of the above feedback on the massage. Well the lady goes we charge 20% tip.....? We handed her a fifty dollar bill asking for $30 back and she said well we charge 20% tip so we can give you back $20. Completely ILLEGAL! Customers tip based on how they felt the service was you cannot demand a 20% tip!!!!!!! In the end, we let them take their 20% and we will never return. Be aware!!!!!! Went here with my boyfriend for a couples massage. Its not super high end or anything but 30 min was only $40 and we were both sore from workouts so we just popped in. They were able to give me the appointment time I wanted even though I called that morning. Very friendly and sweet. I'm sort of petite so the pressure was a little intense for me, I should have spoken up but other then that its a nice place for a good price if you are just looking to get a nice rub down with out the fireworks of a high end spa. Sadly I did not get the man everyone raves about in the reviews. I got a woman who really had no understanding of foot reflexology and spoke no English. I tried using google translate to politely explain that rubbing feet hard and fast may be a form of massage but it's not reflexology which involves pressure points. There was a foot reflexology chart next to us which I pointed to. The fast rubbing of my feet got so uncomfortable that I said I had to go and I would pay but I was disappointed not to actually get reflexology. Got a Swedish couples' massage here. The environment was nice in that the room was quiet and clean. The masseuses worked hard, the back massage was very relaxing. I felt the leg, gluteal, and foot massages were lacking though. The masseuses also spoke to each other in a foreign language frequently at the beginning and end of the massage which was distracting. My masseuse used too much oil, and also frequently rubbed it into my hair as she was trying to keep my hair off my back. I was really disappointed by my experience at Recharge. From past massage experiences I expected a quiet room with a bit of music playing so that I could try to tune out the world. Unfortunately the way the room is set up, the wall doesn't go to the ceiling so you can hear all the hustle and bustle from the rest of the studio and from 2nd street. I asked to turn the music up which helped, but then the woman who was giving me the massage answered her phone after a few loud rings and had a conversation while sort of massaging my back. When the phone rang a second time and she was about to answer I decided to cut the massage short. The massage itself was okay at best - there was too much pressure on my neck but not enough on my shoulders. She switched body parts randomly which was distracting. It looks like this place has new owners and is more of a nail salon now? I decided to stop in to try it for a mani/pedi. Usually I just go to the cheapest/quickest places, so the $40 price was higher for me than usual but they offered 10% discount for the grand opening. All the equipment was brand new, and the technician worked with painstaking care on my hands and feet. I have to say it was quite a treat to not have all the yelling and smells of the usual places I go to. They had tons of Essie, OPI, and gel colors, all of which looked new.
