I attended a Blockchain conference at Rebel. They had available accessible handicap parking in the parking lot about 50 meters from the door (which was ramped). They also have an elevator that can be used to access the 2nd floor. I really appreciated how accessible this is, making it a great venue for midsized conferences. The signs and cleanliness of this location is definitely also something that I truly appreciated (especially since it's used as a nightclub).

The last time I was at this venue, it had just become Sound Academy. Before this name change, it was called The Docks. I have been away from this venue for ten years. The last time I saw a concert here was Keane in June 2009. I absolutely loved seeing them live. I went to see Robyn at Rebel last Thursday night. I had forgotten that I had a VIP ticket. This package allows you to get into the venue an hour earlier, along with getting a commemorative bucket hat and laminated badge. This venue has always been general admission. I don't normally like to go to a general admission show. It means that you are on your feet for most of the night. Considering that I got there at 5:30 pm and the show ended at around 11 pm, I was on my feet for a while. I also wanted to see Robyn badly. I remembered that there was a parking lot across from the venue. I got there and noticed that it was at a steep $20. Thank goodness I had cash, as it's the only acceptable payment method. The guy at the parking lot was nice. I got my ticket, parked, and went in. I didn't know where the box office was. I was supposed to go there, according to the e-mail. I asked a guy at the black tunnel. He said that it was off to the left, but he asked whether I was picking up tickets. I said it was for VIP ones. I was in the right place and he said to walk past him. Cool. There really should be a sign in front of the black tunnel saying VIP. It wasn't until I got to the end of this path that I saw a sign saying that I was in the fast-track ticket lineup. Yay! I will say that Rebel has its act together for VIPs. First, your name is on a list. You simply give your name to the person and she checks it off. There is no need to provide ID. Second, she and another member distributed the hat and badge in cute pink bags before we entered the venue at 6 pm. For the first time, I didn't print my ticket out. I tried at work, but the printer was down. Instead, I did mobile check-in. The woman with the scanner was doing something odd with my phone screen that I didn't get. She just needed to try a different angle to get her scanner to work. It finally did. There is a coat check-in. However, you pay something ridiculous for it. Considering that I just spent $20 on parking, I decided to wear my jacket around my waist for the entire night. Rebel's interior looks all spruced up. I loved how chic the bar areas looked. The lounge chairs looked comfy. The washrooms are spacious, classy, and clean. There are lots of stalls, which I typically complain that there aren't enough at concert venues. I stood in the second row in front of the stage. Another thing that I don't like about general admission is people who feel that they need to be pressed up to you during the entire show. Look, I am taken. I don't enjoy being on a packed subway train during rush hour and don't want to simulate it at a concert venue. The evening started with Kindness, a DJ, who did his first set (yes, first), to get the audience going. Next up, Channel Tres sang and danced. I liked them. Kindness came back on. I will admit that I grew tired seeing him again. He was good, but I didn't need two sets. Finally, after such a long wait, Robyn came on at 9 pm. She did not disappoint. I felt like I could reach over and touch her. I stood at the right place. She was fabulous. I also liked that she invited everyone back on the stage to dance with her. Toronto was her last North American stop on her Honey tour. She was gracious and seemed incredibly touched when the entire audience sang "Dancing on My Own" without her lifting a finger at one point! The downside to Rebel is its dancefloor. It's flat, which means that you can't see a thing if someone taller is standing in front of you. There was a guy bumping into my left shoulder blade for most of the night. I finally looked over. He was Chinese and was so short that it was his cap that was hitting me. Hilarious! My legs felt like Jello after the show. I probably looked odd waddling over to the women's washroom. There were a ton of empty booze cups all on the floor. I will give credit to the venue staff for cleaning them up pretty quickly. Kris was kind to give me a tip on parking before I got into the venue. He advised that I should leave the show early to get out of the parking lot, as it's horrific with the mass exodus. As much as I wanted to, I wanted to see Robyn till then end. My tip goes the other way. I was hungry and ended up getting a hot dog at the vendor closest to the parking lot. It was $5 and was delicious. I sat in my car, devoured it, drank my iced black tea, and then pulled out of the lot. It wasn't too bad leaving. The other tip is that I didn't stay on Cherry Street like most people did. I took Commissioners Street and headed eastbound. It was great! It's not a horrible venue for a concert. It's also not the best. It's simply okay. (107)

My view of Marina from the mezzanine

My first impression was not the greatest. They don't open their parking lot until an hour before doors. I wasn't there for early entry, but I'd be even more angry if I was. It should really be an hour before early entry. Street parking is not allowed after 6:00 PM so those people were risking parking tickets. I managed to find a normal parking spot at a business a short walk away without any indicated restrictions. When I did get in, I was one of the first with mezzanine tickets so I not only had my pick of where to stand, I had time to get an overpriced drink and rest my feet in a booth until more people started filing in. If you do not get a VIP ticket for the best shot at front row on the floor, mezzanine is the only way to go - especially if you're claustrophobic. I do have a heights issue, but felt secure. It was only about $30 more. The show was sold out so as far as I can tell, they sell just enough mezzanine tickets to allow everyone an unobstructed view. We were not packed in like sardines like people on the floor. Sound was great. I do think I ended up with one more wrist band than necessary. They were giving out wristbands for legal drinkers while people were waiting outside, but there's also a wristband for mezzanine, which is already restricted to 19 and over. No biggie. Just something to keep in mind.

Visited Rebel for the second time to attend the Facebook annual holiday party and had a total blast. I had been once years ago for an Edge concert. It was open bar (of course) and there were food stations set up everywhere. I tried a few items but the highlight for me was the poutine station and Christmas trees decorated with chocolate truffles in the ornaments. The view of the CN Tower from outside of the club is amazing. I would visit for the Instagram photo opps alone. The space itself is massive, and obviously conducive to concerts, clubbing, etc. The space was very festively decorated for the holiday party with lots of cool places to snap amazing selfies. For the occasion I visited, Majid Jordan were performing and it was awesome. The bartenders, servers, bouncers I interacted with were fairly friendly so that was a plus. They also had multiple coat checks open which I appreciated to help get peeps out faster at the end of the night. Will likely return again someday!

We came for a private event on a Wednesday night. This place is huge!! It is right on the waterfront with a nice view of the Toronto skyline with CN Tower. There is a stage for the DJ, band or performers. A huge dance floor in front of the stage with many seating areas on the sides and back. Several bars and washrooms. Coat check at entrance. Upper level also has a bar, several seating areas and a great balcony to look down at lower level. Outdoor patio on upper level too.

    Sea theme !

3 different sounds: the main stage/dance area was top 40 mostly, upstairs room was house, and the ground floor room was rap/hiphop. The main stage and hip hop room was always packed, while the house room was pretty empty. There was popcorn, a mixed crowd, and super creative/extravagant displays for themed nights. Although it's out in the middle of nowhere and a nightmare to uber/taxi out of, it's definitely worth it and I'll be coming back for more!

Rebel nightclub is located in the Port Lands area of Toronto which is approximately 10 minutes from downtown Toronto. It's also probably the last big box nightclub in Toronto, most nightclubs are going towards the lounge/club feel which means a smaller venue because of how expensive rent is in Toronto. Rebel nightclub is probably the only venue in Toronto that resembles a Las Vegas nightclub. Really spacious, nice decor and outstanding sound and lighting system. It also has Cabana Pool Bar for day parties in the summertime. I went on a recent Friday to see EDM DJ Alesso. Advance tickets were around $50. If you go on a normal Saturday night admission is usually $20 unless you have guestlist or do bottle service. We got there around 11 pm, line moved reasonably fast and checked our coats ($3.50 each). We ordered a round of drinks 2 cans of corona and two jagermeister shots ($39.00 total tax included). Mark Oliver who use to be the resident DJ at Guvernment was the set before Alesso and he dropped some filthy beats. Alesso was alright and dropped a lot of his anthems. If you go to Rebel nightclub on a Saturday night, club is usually mixed, a lot of university/college students, some young professionals but not many since most young professionals go to the nightclubs on King St West and some 50 plus years old who use to party at Guvernment and still haven't grown out of dropping molly and partying. As I mentioned before the decor is beautiful, it's right on the waterfront. They have the best light and sound system in the city, equivalent to the nightclubs in Las Vegas. Drinks are a little on the pricey side but drinks aren't cheap at nightclubs in general, that's where they make their money. Parking is normally $20.00 outside the club and at the T&T supermarket. There is free street parking nearby if you are willing to walk 5-10 minutes. Overall, Rebel nightclub provides the best big nightclub experience imo and a great venue for music concerts. If you love electronic music you will really enjoy Rebel nightclub on a Saturday night since it's predominantly EDM and some top 40 but they do have other rooms within the nightclub that play other music genres (hip hop). The only downside to the club is since the capacity can hold a lot of people probably a few thousand, they need bodies to fill the nightclub, it attracts some riff raff. It happens when people are young and drunk. If you are looking for a more mature upscale crowd, than you probably want to hit up the clubs on King St West.

Came her for a deadmau5 concert. Immediately when I walked in, I thought this was such a well designed place! Washrooms everywhere, multiple bars, and they pumped the place with A/C (Too many places are like God damn sweat lodges). The stage was a good size and the sound system was exactly what was expected. One downside: during the show they didnt have the orbital lights in motion. There is parking near the venue but it's $20....yikes. Also, I've heard of crime in this location but I felt pretty safe regardless. I'm not the clubbing type, but I would come back if someone like deadmau5 were to come again.

Let's go with the original Hugh's Room. It used to be at 2261 Dundas Street West. It was founded in 2001 by Richard Carson, in memory of his brother Hugh, a musician who died of cancer. Hugh's Room Live moved to its current location on Broadview Avenue in July 2023. It is where the Broadview Faith Temple Church used to be. It makes sense that a music venue would take over a defunct church. The acoustics are fabulous! It is kind of weird returning to this venue. I used to stand in front of this church, be it talking to my mom or chatting with friends before we parted ways. I spent a lot of time in this neighbourhood, especially on Saturdays taking Cantonese classes a few blocks away. The concert was at 8 pm. I drove down to the Riverdale area and parked on Broadview. It's free parking after 6 pm on weekdays. Otherwise, it's Green P paid parking. This concert was general admission. Considering that most Melanie Doane fans would be my age or older, I didn't see this show being standing room only. I was right and relieved. There were seats, but you nabbed them when you arrived. The day before, I travelled home through Chicago. I walked for twenty minutes at Chicago O'hare airport to get to my gate. At Pearson, I walked for ten minutes from the plane to customs. My legs did not want to stand for this show! It is an older church, so there are stairs. It wasn't built for accessibility, but there aren't a ton of steps. If you use a cane or walker, you'd be fine here. Otherwise, it's not the venue if you have complex mobility issues. A woman at the front table said hi. I reciprocated and showed my ticket's QR code on my phone. She scanned it and let me know that I could sit anywhere that wasn't reserved. I asked where the washrooms were. They were downstairs. I used the women's before and after the show. There were three stalls. The washroom was quaint and clean. No complaints. I sat on the main floor. I tried a pew initially. It felt like church. There was no back support, so I moved up to a chair with some decent back support. Perfect! The front rows were reserved. There was seating on either side of the walls. You could also go up to the second floor for more seating. I love Melanie Doane and her music. My first experience was taking in my first Jann Arden concert at the National Art Centre in Ottawa in the late 90's. Opening for her was Melanie. I was floored by her singing and her playing multiple instruments, such as the mandolin, ukelele, and violin. I loved seeing her at shows when I lived in Winnipeg and when I moved back to the greater Toronto area. She doesn't perform often these days. She made giving the gift of ukelele playing to youth her commitment. I was pleased that she held a benefit for her music school. My first instrument was the ukelele in grade 3, so I get it. I went on to play until I was in grade 6. Melanie put on a terrific show. I last saw her a decade ago at, yep, the original Hugh's Room. Insane, right? I had a wonderful time here. Good memories came flooding back. She brought some special guests. Her children, Rosie and Theo, joined her on a song. The former is a singer and the latter is a drummer. They are products of the school and they frankly are blessed growing up with two musical parents. Kathryn Rose and Emilie Claire Barlow joined Melanie to sing a couple of songs. I loved that they covered Depeche Mode's Personal Jesus. They offer the best harmonies with edginess. It was nice seeing Gill Deacon there. I used to listen to her on a CBC music podcast years ago. She helped get the word out on donating to the school. Madeleine, a student of Doane Music School, sang and displayed her uke skills. She was sweet and talented. This venue does not have any food for purchase. It does have beverages, including alcoholic ones. Debit and credit cards are accepted. I liked coming to this former church for a fine evening of Melanie Doane music with her friends and family. I'd return again to take in another concert. It's the perfect venue with the best acoustics. (382)

It's Green P parking. I recommend paying for parking through the Green P app if you need to add more time. When you walk in, there's a flight of stairs and a main floor: - The main floor has a restaurant, bars, and Back Room for concerts - The second floor has a full bar, stage, pool tables, and arcade games I entered the main floor. I was greeted by John, the owner. He was super nice and hospitable, leading me to where my friends were. We were a party of six. Main floor We feasted. We got a lot of food. We divided, shared, and conquered. We ended up boxing leftovers home. I ordered a Diet Coke. It was cold and perfect. I ended up getting another one later on. Balls menu The balls menu consists of appetizers that are sharable with friends. I can also see having a few for yourself to enjoy. It's good finger food eats if you want variety or something lighter, especially before a show. We enjoyed the following ballsy items: - Wookie balls - Beefy Danish balls (frikadeller) - Fish ball fusion - D'oh balls - Garlic mashed potato All the balls were scrumptious and filling. The Wookie balls are one of the Rivoli's signature items. They are rice balls with mirin, sesame oil, and herbs, coated in black and white sesame seeds. They were crunchy and yummy. The beefy Danish and garlic mashed potato balls are comfort in ball form. I dream of this combo still. I was fortunate to have been invited into the kitchen, to check out where these talented chefs make all their food creations. Every order is made fresh. I could tell how much these chefs love what they do. They cooked and plated everything so effortlessly and with such precision. It was impressive! I got to see them make these offerings for us: - Blackened burger - Korean chicken lettuce wraps They were delicious and full of flavour. You can get the lettuce wraps made with veggies if you're vegan. Noodles We got the vegetarian pesto linguini. I loved the roasted red pepper and garlic cloves, with pesto that was fresh and bright. You can also get this dish with chicken. Rivoli's classic pad thai has been a staple since Rivoli opened in 1982. Pan-seared chicken and shrimp are your proteins. Egg, scallions, peanuts, and bean sprouts, and the proteins are tossed with rice noodles in Rivoli's signature pad thai sauce. The sauce is ketchup-based, which may offend pad thai purists, but they are missing out on yumminess by knocking it. You can also get this dish made vegetarian with veggies and tofu. Flatbreads Flatbreads are part of the Sound Bites appetizers at Rivoli. We enjoyed the following flatbreads: - Spicy thai - Spicy thai sauce base, with baby shrimp, marinated chicken, green onion, bean sprouts, ribbons of egg, roasted peanuts, cilantro, and fresh lime zest - Korean BBQ - Korean BBQ sauce base, with marinated chicken, red pepper, red onion, carrot, cheese, cilantro, and green onion - Love from parma - drizzled extra virgin olive oil on the flatbread, with thyme, sea salt, cracked black pepper, prosciutto, sun-dried tomatoes, roasted garlic, shaved parmesan, arugula, and flat-leaf parsley - Blanco - drizzled extra virgin olive oil on the baked flatbread, with fresh thyme, cracked sea salt, gouda cheese, and bufala mozzarella All flatbreads were perfectly toasted and made to order. They were both chewy and crispy where they should be. Scrumptious! Back Room The Back Room is the main stage. Adele, Amy Winehouse, Gord Downie, The Kids in the Hall, Mike Myers are some folks who have performed here. It was cool to look at the stage and sit on it, to soak in everything. I'll need to return and check out a show or more. Second floor I took in The Empty Glasses play a live set at 3 pm on the second floor. The stage is by the bar. This band plays every other Sunday. It felt like being in Nashville, visiting a bar, knowing that there is good, live country music playing as you grab a drink and a bite to eat. The difference is that you save a bit by soaking up country vibes in downtown Toronto. It's a tight-knit community of talented country musicians that can play or sing anything on a Sunday afternoon. It was special to witness. I instantly became a fan, as attending live concerts and performances is my thing. There's also a pool hall with games on this floor. It was a throwback to my undergraduate years learning how to play pool with friends over drinks. There are a decent number of pool tables. I counted eleven. The purple one in the middle is the largest one out of the bunch. The oldest one is over a century old. It's like being in a pool hall museum, but you can touch the artifacts. You can also play video games. I saw Pac-Man and other great 80's arcade games. They made me happy. I had a great time. The food and drinks, and live music were excellent. (436)

My main was the totally mediocre burger, fries & an Amsterdam Blond Beer. Beer was delicious ($7.96). It was their "Blackened Burger" with blue cheese ($21.99). It was good but not great. Very small portion as I've noticed at many other restaurants. The service was good. Our Columbian Server was a very nice, polite young man. In the beginning the restaurant was well cared for & in the beginning it was quiet. We went to the in-house show after dinner. The show was a burlesque show consisting of a bunch of overweight women that were a way too old taking off their cloth! All hosted by a transvestite comedian! It was funny as hell, entertaining & super weird all in one! It was also the Neublanch Art festival on Queen W. Let me just say that, that street was weird central last night!! To me, this was a totally enjoyable evening & I'd recommend this restaurant & the subsequent show for sure! It happens once/month.

Everyone, makes you feel so welcome. The Friday Night Blues jam with Mike and Robin and Juliette is just amazing. What great musicians, and so welcoming to all other musicians who turn up to play. I help run a huge music festival "Govfest" check out Govfest.ca and we have been holding our Battle of the Bands at Black Swan for several years. The sound run by Kevin is awesome and the support provided by John and Bill makes it so easy for anyone wishing to host a night of great live music. Black Swan has so much history and it will always be my bar to go to for a night of great company and great music. Dorothy Currie

Note there's a coverage charge for this jazz section to be $15. I believe the next performance is about $25 around 7:30ish. This spot is pretty vibey and would work well as a date spot. Note: the views we got as a group of 8 is not that great Music was good as well and I noticed several servers went up to sing(not sure if singing is a hiring requirement but they're pretty good). We ordered tequila shots and some cocktails. I noticed the cocktails were pretty strong! They def did not skimp out on their liquor.

We arrived on time for our reservation and were reminded about the $20 per person cover charge, which was fine by me since it goes directly to the musicians. We were shown to a table that was very close to the stage, which was cool, but the way the table was placed meant that my back was to the stage, which meant I had to keep craning my neck to get a decent view. It was uncomfortable, to say the least. Add to that the extremely loud music and a lack of proper air conditioning and I was just suffering in my seat. But I was trying to be a trooper about it, so I ordered a Manhattan. The drink was pretty decent, but I was just so hot and so uncomfortable that finally I threw up my arms and requested the cheque. Our waiter was very apologetic but we were charged the full cover, which meant that with the drink and tip the bill came out to $77. $77 for a 26 minute experience is a little ludicrous. I can't say I'll ever return. One thing I'll say is that there's a reason jazz clubs usually have round tables. It's so unpleasant to have the band at your back, and I'm shocked that's the layout they're going with.
