The highlight of our trip was a personally guided tour by Ms. Frye (not sure of that name). She was so knowledgeable and guided us through each of the exhibits enriching the experience with her own personal insights and pertinent facts. We have so much to thank her mom for too and it is worth the trip just to see her mom's watercolors and drawings as well as her extensive fossil collection. The Heritage Center is a hidden gem well worth a special trip.

They perform about six shows September through June, with a mix of plays and musicals in their own comfortable theater. Tickets sell for under $25 a show. Season ticket holders can easily exchange their tickets for another performance if they cannot attend the one they originally purchased. Parking is free in their lot. Concessions of beverages and candy support the theater. Local artists exhibit their work on the walls, which patrons can enjoy before the show and at intermission.

The Virginia Musical Museum is an outstanding semi-hidden gem of a half-day attraction in…read moreWilliamsburg and well-worth a stop if you are an audiophile of any sort. Came here recently with my parents since it had been on our list of spots to try ever since they moved to the area. You might think you're in the wrong place when you walk in and see a ton of pianos for sale, but nope: the manager comes right over, escorts you to where the museum itself starts, and sets you on the path. He was very personable and was a veritable museum of musical knowledge himself, great intro to a great experience. This place is nothing short of a mesmerizing medley of some of the strangest musical instruments you have ever seen, along with an incredibly cool collection of memorabilia from esteemed Virginia musicians, some recent and many from days long departed. I thought the automatic banjo machine was particularly cool, never seen one before and probably never will again. The entire thing took us about three hours to work our way through and it was quite an education. It is mostly reading though they have a few interactive exhibits on the top floor, and they seem to be actively planning even more which is always nice to see. If you have a passion for music both old and new, I definitely recommend stopping by! Overall: 5.0 stars ---- Pros: - Very cool museum with some one-of-a-kind pieces and truly fascinating historical tidbits. - Extremely nice manager with a clear passion for maintaining and expanding this collection. - Good value for the admission price. Cons: - While I can't imagine this place being overly busy, parking is limited so I can imagine this could be an issue, albeit a small hypothetical one.

What a terrific place. Music lovers, and lovers of cool machines should definitely see this place.read more

My husband who passed in April had introduced me to Opera, our first time in NYC. We moved to Williamsburg 8 years ago from Washington, DC and never looked back. We did have our concerns about entertainment since we had taken advantage of the Kennedy Center for so many year. When he was well we had gone to a few of the opera productions at the Kimball Theatre in town. We enjoyed the productions. Last night I attended their season opener a dinner concert held at the Colonial Heritage Country Club. It was grand! After a nice dinner with good table mates the lights were dimed and the unexpected entertainment began. Not really a concert. It was a stream of talent that introduced us all to some of the performers. The voices. The selection of pieces. Some I recognized. All was stimulating and thoroughly enjoyed. When those beautiful voices ring out you find yourself holding your breath trying not disturb what you are hearing. I was grateful to be in that audience welcoming the season. With such a positive experience I felt had to share. Their next production is Die Fledermaus staged at the Crosswalk Auditorium in Norge. It's a large auditorium. Plenty of parking. No walking distance to the theatre. If you aren't familiar with the story you can read about it on line. There is definitely some humor. I'm looking forward to attending the matinee on September 9th. The voices of the talent is electric. Lifting the spirits. We are so fortunate to enjoy the gift these individuals have been blessed with. I look forward to continued delights ahead.

Yesterday I saw Opera in Williamsburg perform Mozart's "The Magic Flute."…read more This is a review of the opera troupe, not specifically Mozart's work or the venue. As one might expect, this nascent troupe is still experiencing growing pains. Casting for TMF was adequate, while the voice of the larger of the Three Ladies (mezzo-soprano Agueda Fernández-Abad, I believe) knocked my socks off. And Pamina (soprano Kearstin Piper Brown) was equally impressive. The normally intimate Kimball Theatre seemed claustrophobic with a sell-out audience. The Kimball, built in the 1930s, was feeling her age, as evidenced by the queues at the ladies' rooms during intermission. And little old ladies (we seemed to be a significant chunk of the demography) frequently do not do long lines well. There were no show-stoppers, however, and I intend to enjoy more OIW productions in the future.

My niece is attending this college and was in this season's first production of Romeo and Juliet (she was the Nurse). The location is easy to find within the campus and is right on Jamestown Rd up the street from the Restoration area. There is plenty of parking available for performances not too far from the entrance. The seats are arranged in typical stadium style but unlike some other college theaters, they were very comfortable to stay in for a 3.5 hour performance. The stage is large enough that you could hear/see everything without too much trouble. There are box seats available for a more private seating. While it isn't an overly large theater, it was still sufficient space for these performances. Ticket prices are very reasonable in comparison to the park. I really recommend supporting these students that work so hard to entertain.
