Really Good Stuff is pretty amazing. I find it's a great place for small gifts and for arts and crafts projects. Occasionally you'll find a stellar piece of musical equipment too, but then it's usually too expensive. That's my main peeve about this place. Too expensive. The owner is a cool guy in my opinion. Maybe not a warm and inviting guy, but interesting and fun to talk to. It's really fun to go off searching through the piles of junk for treasure. Usually I spend a long time trying to find something cool but usually succeed. The cat and dog that are usually there are both adorable. The cat seems to prefer to rest on top of the vinyl collection. Definitely worth checking out once a month to see what new oddities have arrived. read more

This place is unique but incredibly overwhelming. There are thrift stores back home that remind me a lot of this place; I've reviewed them in the past. They are a hoarders dream. And for some people that is great and fun to sort through. And sometimes it's fun for me. Really depending on my mood sometimes. But I came here in hope that I would find something very specific. But the second I walked in, it became clear that finding that specific thing wasn't going to happen. I don't mind sorting and digging, I do it a lot as an antique and oddities collector. But only really when the prices reflect how much time and effort the customer goes through actually sorting through everything. I'm willing to pay for items that are easily found in a store. I don't know, I thrift shop a lot. And I dig a lot. Heck, I shop at the goodwill outlet sometimes and that is.. something else. But here, it was just really hard to differentiate between what was what and when I looked at one price tag, I went "woah!" And left. Because the price just wouldn't be worth the dig for me. I'm sure this place is fun for tourists and the people that really love to dig, just wasn't for me. If you want an orderly, fancy antique store, this place is not for you. If you love digging (literally) for treasure then you can't get better than here. The inventory is constantly changing, moving, and disappearing. Great place to get random junk for projects, pick up a missing part to that doo-dad you have, or finding a weird random Christmas present. They also have some amazing furniture in their back room (which requires you to be fairly nimble to weave around) and cool old bicycles in various states of repair. There's always something to look at, something to find, and something to buy. The staff is friendly, although not in a corn-syrupy kind of way, and will usually work with you on prices. I dropped a tiny pin on their floor once and they said if I found it I could have it for free (and I did!) Really awesome junk spot! The guy who runs it is super friendly and gives sweet deals. Great finds, but you will have to dig a shimmy through tight spots. Last time I came by they just got a 1920's Player Piano, super creepy and I've been keeping my eye on a sick 1950's pink dentist chair and a hair dryer haha. Perhaps the last authentic treasure-hunting joint in PDX. Love this place, but then I love the hunt. As to overpriced comments, well, I bought a blaupunkt radio for $10 and sold it on eBay for $175. So, know your stuff. As for the two comments on rudeness... I've been here probably 20-30 times, and never had a rude word. Great staff who treat you like you're a human being, and may actually know something. I Find it interesting that both of these negative assessments were from out of towners. The owners are treasure finders who have a keen eye for interesting, odd, and beautiful antiques. The owners know the worth of their merchandise and have priced good deals according to that. This isn't my first time going into a shop where they wanted you to leave your bags at the front, so I completely get it. Anyone who has anything negative to say about this store is an idiot. i wouldn't bring a 3 year old here, but this place is packed full of amazing treasures & the entire staff is really very friendly & knowledgeable in everything awesome. Lots of amazing things to buy & the only store I would think about selling stuff to. I've brought things here that I didn't know about & Evan was able to give me the full history on it. I think we found this place by accident. We didn't have much time our first trip, so we made a point of going back the next day. The first day I walked up to the counter with some odds and ends with no prices on them and some photos and he said $5 for the whole pile, which seemed like a steal. The second day I think evened out the deal since he charged my husband $5 for a tiny glass zipper puller thing...maybe he marked us as tourists. The photo file cabinets could occupy me for days. Although they need a better system for the larger photos--rolled up and shoved in the drawer, not the best or easiest. Tons to look at, seems like good people. read more

I love me some old stuff. A friend took me here, and I could have walked through this place for hours. There are so many hidden "treasures" (which all depends on what you consider a treasure) and SO much to see and find, that I came back two days later and was still being surprised by new unique and rare discoveries. The guys there are really helpful, and precariously climbed up some shelves to get down something I was asking about. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 star is that most items are not priced, so I had to ask about each of the three treasures I dug out from the store. But if you have any appreciation for antiques and items that clearly have a past, this is worth checking out. read more

I freaking love this place. It's not vintage for irony's sake, it's vintage for 'I have a hardon dedicated to the stuff that I grew up with'. And when your father was a collector of stuff from /his/ childhood (the 1940s), you end up with a distaste for the brightly-colored mid-century modern kitsch that fills every other store. RGS wins because they always have what I'm looking for (be it a dusty tube radio or a small electric fan from the 20s) and the guys that work there somehow know where everything is. I'm pretty sure the younger guy is psychic, or maybe he's got X-ray vision like Superman. This place will always be my first stop when I'm on the hunt for a new treasure for my place. read more

They claim to have amazing prices but I saw a mix from amazing to crazy so be picky. If you love to peruse a crazy amount of stuff, you'll love it here. Don't expect to find ridiculously cheap prices on things that are worth real money, of course; but DO expect to nab rare parts for stuff you already have! What don't they have here? It's all jumbled and a mess, so don't go in looking for Crate and Barrel organization. You have to take your time, peruse the goods, pet the cat, pet the dog, touch a few things, remember that you used to have that exact same toy, and your grandmother had that horrific oil painting too! It's just that kind of place. The guy working there was nice and helpful. It doesn't get five stars because parts of it are difficult to navigate and it certainly isn't accessible to people with any kind of locomotion issues. I could have spent all day there just looking at stuff. I didn't want any of it, because my husband is firmly anti-stuff and I would get yelled at if I brought anything home that didn't have a concrete purpose in the bigger scheme of household goods, but it doesn't mean I don't enjoy looking at all the fabulous treasures and wondering who owned them before. read more

The minute we walked in, the person I assume is an owner was a total condescending jerk. I've never been treated so poorly literally 10 seconds after I've walked in a store. We didn't even say anything before he took his frustrations out on us. I'm amazed that people as horrible as this person still exist. Being in business for 20 years does not make someone successful in life. If the golden rule applied, they'd be out of business. After shopping around the rest of the day I heard many similar stories about the mistreatment of customers there. I won't let this experience ruin my perception of Portland, everyone else I came into contact with were really warm and kind, just like I had heard Portland usually is. I guess this place is just a disappointing exception. Oh well there are plenty of other fantastic places all around Portland that don't treat people like crap. I spent my money there. read more

Really Good Stuff is a cavernous pile of junk that is tempting to paw through. There are plenty of diamonds in the rough here and their specialties are old musical instruments, oddities, old family photos, and old cameras. I'll always regret that I didn't buy that 3-D camera I saw here a few months ago. Don't be afraid to wander into the back--they store larger furniture and pianos back here. A least a few cats live in here somewhere, so don't be surprised if your purchases are garnished with cat hair or if you find a kitten sleeping on one of the sofas for sale. It only adds to the feeling that you're in someone's cluttered house digging through theirs and their dead ancestors belongings. Always worth a look. read more

I love this place. I wanted something unique that I could modify to house the most obnoxious thing in my life - MY CATS' LITTERBOX. Perhaps a piece of furniture, a vanity, an old hi-fi... I ended up finding the greatest old cedar-lined steamer trunk at RGS. When I shared my grand vision of getting my bathroom back and putting this thing out as furniture, Evan of RGS offered to cut an arch in one end and clean it up a bit for me - which he did perfectly. HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY! We now have this uber cool vulcanized rubber and brass trunk under the window in our living room. My slightly smaller litter box (about a third the trunk's size) is inside which is also precisely where all the litter stays, too. My cats are totally rockin the casbah with this thing, thanks to Really Good Stuff and it's fine staff! (Coincidentally, the previous trunk owner's name was on the trunk so I googled her to learn she was a US NAVY nurse during WWII, and seemed to be a very cool person. She lived not far away from us and died on Feb 4. Somehow we think she'd be OK with this repurposing. We framed her black and white photo and she now sits regally atop her lovely old trunk :.) read more

This place is part museum, part vintage shop, part thrift, part episode of Hoarders. (The crafty kind of hoarders, not the creepy rat-infested hoarders.) Still, I wouldn't say Really Good Stuff is for the faint of heart. Mind you, they certainly do have a lot of really good stuff, but it requires a hearty amount of patience and intent, as well as free time on your hands, coins in your pocket, and a commitment to haggle. They should just call this store... "OVERPRICED JUNK WE AREN'T INTERESTED IN SELLING." Yeah, there are some neat items, usually it is something attached to something else you want so you can tear it apart and make something nicer...but nothing is neat enough to justify their prices. Any store that leaves price tags off half the items is baiting customers so they can size them up for how much it looks like they would pay, rather than just pricing competitively. They even have signs that say to make offers. But when you make an offer, they are so offended, they become so indignant, you just want to toss a match in the place. Truth is, they aren't interested in making any deals to move their junk inventory. Best advice, think of this as a free museum where you could be injured by increasing piles of junk likely to fall on you while you look for a price tag that doesn't exist. Don't fantasize about buying anything unless you enjoy being exploited. There is nothing in this store you can't find at goodwill, ebay or craigslist for half price and without the bad attitude. After such a bad experience, I wish they would run out of money to pay their rent and go out of business. Don't waste your time with these jerks. read more

Very bad business. I had a item that I took in and worked out a consignment deal with the owner. He sold it, but not on the agreed price. So one of two things happened, he forgot to sell it on the agreed price, or he lied about what it sold for and STOLE the rest. I find it hard to believe he forgot. We agreed to sell the item for no less than $300 instead he sold it for under $100. keep in mind the profit split is divided into thirds. He lied. Broke his agreement, with a irreplaceable item. I can't prove he outright stole the money, but I have a gut instinct the older man is a thief. My advice, don't do business with thieves... take it for what its worth read more

I love these type of places. This store is a treasure hunt! If you are not careful, you will waste HOURS in this wonderful store. Lots of everything, LPs, 45s, clothing, vintage music items, postcards, magazines, many bottles, signs, photos of unknown people :D, and a BUNCH of 16mm educational films! The man was quite nice, and they do have a lot of business even for a place with extremely narrow walkways full of treasure! Did get to see the cat (Tommy) in the back, resting. Parking was not easy at all (Labor Day Weekend of course) so had to park a block away. The other reviewer probably went on a normal weekend. read more
