This is great if you're between the ages of 8 and 17, but not quite so great is you mind hearing the same songs playing over and over and over and over... No, to be fair, Red Dragon is not nearly so bad as some other station where they literally play the same 20 songs, at least here there are requests for older songs, so you'll occasionally find yourself listening to a bit of a gem. Train's 'Drops of Jupiter' springs to mind. Who's that tutting in the back? Red Dragon FM are very involved in the local community, looking through the galleries on their website showed a massive amount of local events that they've been a part of. They are also very involved while on air, with local listeners forever honing in for competitions or other random involvement. Anyway, this is the kind of station you might flip on while you do the housework or might have to listen to while in work, but it's not going to speak many words or wisdom or enhance the culture in your life.

If you go down to Cardiff Bay and visit the Atlantic Wharf centre, then you're surely in for an entertaining time, or rather your children perhaps really are... A five star radio show; it has competitions, quizzes, phone in call sessions, guess the song and singer games, they have the local news updates, traffic and weather updates, they go out and about locally, they know their gossip about the arts and entertainment world and often help with charities. They are very sensitive towards their audiences, polite and caring. They also have a website. Which is full of games: news, competitions and of ways in how, if you should so wish to, to get in touch. You can watch them speak in their attractive studio of a station. I recommend for all teenagers, and young adults from ages; 12 - 30 year olds, preferably for those who live in Cardiff or Wales.

And yet, for some reason, I actually have a bit of a soft spot for Star Radio. Maybe it's because, somewhat appropriately for a station that broadcasts out of Western Super Mare, they seem to be stuck in something of an 80s timewarp. Basically, the music policy, instead of just pumping out the same load of old X Factor rubbish, focuses on classic hits from the 80s and beyond (I just tuned in for a random sample and they were playing 'That's Entertainment' by The Jam). Now, don't get me wrong, I wouldn't normally tune in from home under any circumstances whatsoever, but if you're stuck in your car and are forced to listen to your radio, this sits somewhere inbetween the almost acceptable at times Radio 2 and subjecting yourself to Heart FM.

This seems to be the only real uniting feature of the music choices, with Aerosmith sitting cheek by jowl with Whitney Houston. Inoffensive nineties pop gets a look in to - Christina Aguilera being a perennial favourite of the DJs. If you've got a taste for these decades then this radio station is OK. Otherwise it's not that great. They seem to share Heart FM's taste for celebrity news, which I find achingly dull. If learning obscure details of the lifetimes of the rich and famous are how you like to spend your leisure time, then tune in. I suppose this is counteracted slight by their having local news coverage, the only decent reason to tune in I can think of. The DJs aren't great, and to be honest I can't see why you'd choose Star over just sticking on a CD.

It's been running for 15 years now, and aims to provide student listeners with decent music and up-to-date hourly news plus information on issues that are important to them. During the daytime, there's usually more mainstream content such as chart music, competitions, features and general banter - then after 6pm there's more specialist music, whether it's jazz or new, emerging talent. On Sundays they have some talking radio - with political debates, comedy, and so on - from 10am to 3pm. Then at 3pm there's a student chart countdown compiled by a collaboration of various universities across the country. For journalism students at Cardiff, and particularly those studying broadcasting, the radio station provides an opportunity to gain some practical experience and something to stick on your CV - although volunteering opportunities are open to students of all disciplines, not just the journalists!

You will find mainstream entertainment shows in the day time and the ever so slightly obscure and bizarre speciality shows in the evening. This station is run by a great team of dedicated and passionate students, I would recommend listening to this station even if you aren't a student, and that you can, every so often it will broadcast on 87.7fm for a few weeks. Failing that, get with the times and listen to your radio online at http://www.xpressradio.co.uk/about.php I would also recommend getting involved with Xpress radio as a student as it will enhance your portfolio and if you are lucky enough, you may even win an award for your work at the yearly student media awards held in the Hilton. Get involved, you won't regret it.
