We've been looking for an apartment in the Somerville area for about 1.5 months and were getting no…read moreresponses from properties and brokers. We were becoming tired of the whole run around process and never hearing back, especially because we had what most brokers tried to push as a lower price point saying nothing was available in the area for that much. (We currently lived in a place less than what we wanted). While taking a stroll in another neighborhood in Somerville, we randomly pulled up the Zillow app and found out the location we were standing right in front of had a new unit available in the same time frame and price point we were looking for. It actually seemed too good to be true. We called right away and Ranjita got back to us immediately. We rattled off the list of questions we had about the place and she was able to give us answers right away and she promised to get back to us about the answers she didn't (which she did that night). I'm the paranoid one of the two and had /many/ more questions. It's crazy to think we were going to sign a lease at a new apartment we had never been to (thus is the times of covid and my fear of scams was elevated). Ranjita returned with more pictures and a great video walk-through. I was still nervous. She happily provided me with proof of identification and broker's license. She gave us the option to pay by credit card which made me feel safer about my personal funds. She got us the lease working with property management. This always takes time as the broker acts as the go-between and she did her best to get us the papers we needed. When I had a few questions or asked if we could change items on the lease, she listened, was helpful, and reassured me I wasn't annoying her with so many questions (I probably was, but she was nice enough to act like I wasn't ha). She was able to get us in to view the apartment after the previous tenants move out, so at least we were able to see it before move-in day. Quick process overall. Very responsive to emails. Easier than we thought it would be.

Ranjita then ignored my email requesting the refund. We applied to the unit in part because it said "cats allowed" in all online listings (see photo attached for example). We were upfront throughout the process that we were about to get a cat. During the showing, a no-pet policy was never mentioned. We were encouraged to apply, and then after we paid the application fee, all of a sudden we were told that the owner of the unit would not consider any pets and the listings were then all updated to "cats not allowed," which seems very misleading. At its worst, it is a malicious "bait and switch" strategy... at its best it's very negligent and disorganized. Just be careful when applying. We were referred to Cambridge Premier Realty by a friend, but we will not be referring them to other friends of ours.

They were well paid for this service, and well aware of the difficulties of this particular project when they took it on. In the contract I agreed to every suggestion they'd made that would make the apartment desirable and easy to rent. It was a disaster. They failed to manage their contractor and it took them a year, with some work still undone now, in March 2025. They missed the September 1st rental target (when the propoderance of Cambridge leases renew). As a result, I had to reduce the rent they inititally proposed by 23%, and it did not rent until March 2025. This was especially painful since I had based the financing of the large project on their written estimate of rental income, which I then provided to the bank (with Skylines knowledge). Their response to missing this important leasing deadline was "You'll make it up later" But they offered no consideration for the damage during construction, including lost items and damaged art and antiques. It's "pay me" not matter what. A one way street. Alex, the owner, is a strict constructionist if the contract favors him. If not, he'll just make things up, and get nasty. Issam, Exec VP, is wont to say "as we discussed" when I have no memory of any such. Alex and Issam have a "good cop - bad cop" routine going, and I deeply regret having hired them. I advise being very cautious if you decide to engage.

Thankfully, we never hired him to manage our property. Bullet dodged. I feel bad I had to deal with him, but feel worse for him as he has to deal with his own stupidity every day. There are better property managers out there you should use. I reached out to him for a quote, but when I decided to use another manager I let them know they immediately threatened to sue me. Also Alex, smart as he is, puts email trackers on his emails but does not understand how the tech works, thought I was forwarding it to people, still confused about that.

Apparently they do want your money, but when you question their work ethics, they no longer care about making money and closing deals. Lucia's pride was more important. I mean clicking boxes and entering an email to send the results... it hard work. Enjoy :) To the broker: I had a really weird exchange with your agent Lucia Fiasco. I am not sure what her real issue was. I was just typing up my 1 star review for her and your company. Below is the text exchange, as well as she sent me about a dozen different places. She did not bother to take the time to see if the listings actually met our requirements. Places did not allow dogs, not near public transport, wrong area, etc. Then she has the audacity to get snippy with me, when all she can do is click a few boxes. SHE DID NOT EVEN BOTHER READING THE LISTINGS BEFORE SENDING THEM TO ME. What kind of customer service is this? I HAVE MONEY I WAS GOING TO GIVE YOU AND SHE BLEW IT! Your post said that you had other listings in Newton. She seemed to get pissed when I started to inquire about the other listings your brokerage has. I was looking for an agent that had places to rent. If I wanted to click a few boxes on MLS and look at other peoples listing, I can do that. How does she get clients to pay if she can not hold a conversation with me? She was enough of a smartass to offer your email, but then ignored me when I asked for it. She unassumingly forgot about this email, as well as her cell phone attached to many listings, including... Home prep LLC. Is this how you operate your business? Lucia: Mike this is Lucia my broker gave me your number to contact you for a rental. How many in your group? Any children or pets? Also when are you looking to move? What are you areas of interest is it just Newton? Chat soon Me Newton would be great. I grew up in Needham. Anywhere in a decent part of Boston or metrowest. Must be close to t or commuter rail. We have 1 dog. Would like but not mandatory a fenced yard and if apartment on first floor, but prefer house Lucia: Ok perfect. Your email is blocked by craigslist. Can you please provide for me and I will send along the listings. Thanks Me: (gave my email) Lucia: 4 bedroom Me: Yeah $2600 max Lucia Sent a few. There should be like 8/9. Thanks let me know if you have a specific location and I will cater to that Me: Ok I'll take a look thanks Me: Our move in date is feb 15th Lucia: Ok we can work that out Me: Are any of these your offices listings? Lucia: I am a real estate agent I share listings with other realtor. Why do you ask? Lucia: Their are a few on the list from my direct office few others are shared. Me: I know you are a real estate agent. I was too a real estate agent. That would be pretty deceptive to say if you are just pulling from MLS Lucia:My office works with three other offices and yes MLS is a shared listings site you Should know that. Ok not sure what your argument is here. Have a nice night. Me: I was just looking for an agent that has a place for rent. I'll let your broker know how professional you are. Keep up the good work Lucia: Ok have a nice night. Lol Lucia: Let me know if you need his email I can provide it to you. Thanks Me: Thanks what is it Message from Henry the Broker: Sometimes people don't click. There are just as many bad clients as bad agents. Seems like a minor miscommunication. If you were an agent and didn't want mls listing sent to her you should have told her that. I would have sent them to you to look at.. why not? That's what they're there for.. just move on. Fyi if you're an agent you need to disclose that immediately. No need to badger agents who are just taking time to send potential listings you may like, and are willing to make appointments and show you places. Seems to me like she was just trying to help, whether or not she did.. no need to freak out. Alittle childish My response: Seems to me that her and you can not take the time or care to have adequate customer service skills. Neither her nor you seem to care what I am saying. Seems like a recurring theme. I am just shocked at the lack of care. You are dealing with peoples livelihood. SHE WAS TRYING TO HELP? How does sending me a dozen place to look to sift through, that many I COULD NOT MOVE IN TO help? THEY DID NOT MEET MY REQUIREMENTS. Why was it so difficult to tell me which listings are in-house? Which ones are from the offices' you have a personal relationship with? And the ones that she just clicked a few boxes and entered my email? How is sending me listings that I can find anywhere else and do not meet my requirements help me? This is creating work for me. Not only creating work for me, but then you two expect to get paid for this nonsense. I am not an agent (reading is fundamental). I am in the hospitality industry and if you call this customer service you are way off... out of space

I just tried to give zero stars, and it wouldn't let me…read more My husband and I had to work with GMRE to see an apartment we saw on Craigslist in April. We know that apartments typically get rented within a day, if not hours, of being posted on Craigslist, so we were prepared to win. We have been looking for a reasonably-priced (max $1300) 1+ bedroom in Somerville for over a year, and have struggled -- we currently live in a teeny apartment on Winter Hill and want to stay in the area, since my husband teaches at the high school. We are both public employees and can't afford to pay $1500 or $1600 for an apartment. So, when we saw this place, we contacted the agent for GMRE listed on the ad, and made it clear we were serious about getting this place and were willing to do anything to see it first. It only cost $1100 for two bedrooms, and they offered off-street parking for our one car, and would also allowed our cat. Even better, they had lead-free paint, which is critical to a young couple like us that is hoping to start a family (but who are stymied by the high cost of renting a 2-bedroom). We said we were willing to put down any amount in order to secure it -- in my experience, getting an apartment comes down to seeing it first and bringing your checkbook. Apparently not with these guys. When we asked to see it, we were told to come by two days later, on Good Friday. Since we celebrate Good Friday, we asked if they could show it to us sooner. After a lot of hemming and hawing, they agreed, and we made an appointment to see it Wednesday night after work. Dan told us "hopefully you'll be the first ones to put in your application -- lots of people want this place!" About ten minutes after we made the appointment, the apartment was RE-POSTED on Craigslist with a different agent's name as an "Open House." WTF?????? Not cool. I should have known then. So we freaked out, we got to the appointment 10 minutes early, and even though there were about 30 people there (annoying), we were the first ones to put down an application. We put money down immediately. We have near-perfect credit, steady income, good jobs and outstanding references from our current tenant. We were thrilled to hear that the landlords, who lived on the first floor, are Italian (like me) and speak Italian (also like me). We waited for days to hear. After having our phone calls go un-returned, we finally got Dan on the phone. He told us it "was between us and another guy" who had gone back the next day with his girlfriend to meet the landlord. Funny. WE were told the landlord didn't want to meet prospective tenants. And when we asked to be given the opportunity to meet the landlords, we were denied. Yet they still ran our credit report, dinging our scores for no reason. And to make matters worse, they kept our down payment and stopped returning our calls and emails attempting to get our check back for days. We obviously never had a chance of getting the place, yet they wasted our time, tied up our money and hurt our credit by needlessly checking our report. Who knows why they favored the other couple? I don't care -- just don't string me along and lie to me. They never even called our current landlord for reference. And, as you'd expect, we still haven't found another apartment. We are quiet, we shovel, we take out the trash, we make small repairs to our unit and we pay our rent early every month. But that apparently counts for nothing. I will never, ever work with GMRE again.

I actually found GMRE through a site called padmapper.com (which I highly recommend) and was lucky enough to stumble across a truly fantastic apartment. The pictures were great, the posting was clear and concise, and the cost was very fair. I e-mailed, told a little about myself and I said I was available the next night for a showing. Within a few hours, William (the owner) set me up with a time! The apartment was fantastic as stated before, but William (our rental agent) was just as good; super friendly, very well spoken, and incredibly knowledgable. After the showing, he drove us to the T and wished us good luck. I went home, filled out the application, faxed it the next morning, and by mid afternoon that day, I had an awesome new apartment that I'm so excited about. He then set up a meeting for us with the owner, and we went over the lease, sat down at his office, and talked for about 45 minutes and really got to know our new landlord. I believe this was absolutely invaluable, and the whole process took about 4 days, start to finish. HIGHLY recommend!
