Some of the realtors here like Ian or Andrea are good. However, there are others like Kody who have no clue how the Massachusetts laws work. You cannot show an apartment just because you gave "24 hour notice". The law dictates that the landlord or realtor has to work with the tenant; it does not give them absolute right of entry, just because the lease says so. Kody did not knock and used a key to get into our apartment. The crappy realtors should use their brain for a second and think whether that makes sense. If they were the tenant and their landlord supposedly gave them notice but they didn't see it, etc, would they think it's reasonable for the landlord to enter? read more

Very happy with the rental service and process with ARE. Chris H was the broker that found us a nice couple for a year long lease. No problems with the process. Chris communicated as often as necessary and was very accommodating with scheduling the visits. We honestly didn't think we'd find new tenants in this age of Covid19. We were worried the apt would stay empty for a long time. We did lower the rent a little bit to attract more prospects and it did the trick. Since we live in the building, we're very picky with who we rent to but Chris worked with us to get it done. I highly recommend this company for your apt rental needs. Avoid Ezra. I found an apartment on HotPads and contacted Ezra about it as he was the listing agent. I told him I was getting anxious about finding a place to live for 9/1 because there are so few dog-friendly apartments to start with, let alone ones in my price range. He told me exactly how much money I'd need to have on me to take the apartment off the market, and we decided to go look at it at lunch the next day. I transferred the money from my savings account, got permission from my manager to leave work midday, and when I got home that evening, I put my checkbook in my bag. The next day, I arrived a little early to see the apartment. Ezra was a few minutes late, and one of his colleagues--Mike, I think--arrived at the same time with another woman interested in seeing the apartment. Because we were first, we went in first, and the apartment was perfect. It had everything I was looking for, but most importantly, it was in my price range and DOG FRIENDLY. I told Ezra I wanted it, and he asked me to drive us back to his office. "I don't have a car," I said. It's a pretty big assumption that people around here own cars, I think, plus, every other realtor I've ever worked with from Apartment Rental Experts drove me around. I mean, it's part of the realtor's job. "Oh," he said. "You should call us an Uber, then." I was about to pay him a significant amount of money, but he couldn't even call us an Uber--or offer to pay me back for calling one. "How did you get here?" I asked, "Drive us back to your office." "I took my scooter. It only fits me." So he agreed to go back to his office to get his car. We walked out the door, and he said to Mike, "She's going to take it. I'm going to run back to get my car." "Do you want to see it anyway?" Mike asked the woman with him. She shrugged, and in they went, as Ezra rode away. About five minutes later, they ran out of the apartment to Mike's car, and she was on the phone. They got in, and he raced down the street. A few minutes later, Ezra slowly chugs up the street in his car. I get in, he turns around, and we head toward his office. Just as we parked, he got the call. The apartment had been rented. By that girl, who didn't even have a dog. Because Mike knows how to be a realtor, and Ezra doesn't. read more

A couple of weeks ago my landlord contacted me and let me know that a realtor from this company would be contacting us to do apartment viewings. I don't legally have to do this, but I figured I would help my landlord seeing as how I'm moving out. Well that was my first mistake, this company had 6 different realtors contact me in the first 10 hours after that email. I was even texted as late as 9:30pm at night asking about showings. I advised them that I don't want to be contacted after 8pm as I'm not benefiting from this at all and they need to respect my rights as a person. After that I was contacted multiple times a day by a different realtor every time. When I complained I was told they had an office of 20+ people and this is just how it was. Oh so even better, when they came by the first time, I was in my room working from home. The realtor, Parnup, who was supposed to be the main realtor, did not knock on the door, he literally just opened the door with the keys that the landlord gave him. I greeted him at the door and asked what he wanted, he said he scheduled a time to come over, he didn't, only the day. He did not text or call ahead or EVEN KNOCK. He just walked in like he owned the place. I went back upstairs while he took pictures or whatever. He came upstairs and then walked into my roommate's room without even knocking. I politely told him that he needs to call or text ahead of time, and all his realtors need to as well. He also needs to knock before entering the apartment or any of the rooms as this was common courtesy. After this negative interaction, and an email to my landlord about this matter, they adhered to these requests. They maybe had 3-4 viewings total and then after all the texts and showings...we didn't hear anything. I emailed my landlord to see if they apartment was rented...nothing. After 10 days of nothing, I'm pretty sure they found someone to rent the unit, but overall I'm horrified with this experience and as a tenant I offer this fair warning that you do have rights and you are not legally obligated to let these people into your home. You can choose to stand up for your rights or play along, but just know that these people will contact you non-stop and will not even give you the courtesy to let you know when it's all over. read more

Although we ultimately ended up moving somewhere that was being rented by the owner, we have nothing but positive things to say about Chris. He really listened to our wants and needs, and was proactive about searching listings on our behalf. Ok, I got this apartment through these guys, and they made it pretty easy. However, this is regarding *showing* said apartment, as I'm moving out in a week. Guys, I know you have three locations. I know you have a bunch of agents in each location. But PLEASE communicate! My landlord has stated, in writing, to me that she will not show the apartment until June 1, when I am completely out and have turned in my keys. This does not give you permission to call me 5 times a day and say you're heading over with people right now, oh, and, will I be there to let you in? No, I'm not going to let you in! First of all, have some decency - give me 24+ hours notice. Two hours? Not ok. Second of all, one of your agents - and I've talked to at least four - told me that, yeah, he saw that there was a DO NOT SHOW designation on my apartment in your database. Third - I work 14+ hours a day, seven days a week. I'm not HOME to show you the apartment. If there's a DO NOT CALL designation? DON'T freaking CALL me. And you're NOT getting the keys until I am out of the apartment, so GTFO. And even if my apartment was in showing condition? I have it IN WRITING from the landlord that no one is showing it until after I'm out. Why do rental agents never listen?? read more

I am giving two stars because they were easy to get in touch with and set us up with a few viewings in a short period of time. However, that is where the positive aspects end. One of the realtors, whose name I won't mention, was extremely pushy and difficult to work with. He hassled me over text after we had seen a place that we were only mildly interested in. He texted me soon after we left, telling us that it wouldn't last more than a day and we had to make our decision NOW! The next morning he told us that other people were coming to sign the lease at 3 PM so if we didn't come by before then we would lose the place (keep in mind, this is a weekday when my boyfriend at I are both working). He reminded us over and over that this is the best we could do for the price, and WE SHOULD TAKE IT ASAP!!! Strangely enough, I continued to see the apartment posted on craigslist for up to a week after that. So his "sales" tactics include lying to clients. I felt harassed and he made what is normally a stressful experience 10x worse. We ended up working with an independent realtor who is not associated with Apartment Rental Experts. He was pleasant, not pushy, and found us a great place that we were absolutely sure we wanted. read more

I do NOT recommend using this agency. Two years ago when we rented our place we went through Apartment Rental Experts. We worked with an agent who was rude, unfriendly, and definitely not helpful. One month after I emailed him my application he claimed not to have received it, despite the fact that I sent it in multiple times to his direct email. He never responded to any of my questions about the application either. My roommates had a similar experience with him. Fast forward two years and now our landlord is using Apartment Rental Experts again to rent the place. There are about 5 different agents all scheduling showings. They have scheduled many with less than 24 hours notice, even though this violates our lease (and their policies), but not only that: they never show up as scheduled! One time they came 2 hours late, several times they just haven't shown up at all. This is very annoying when you're trying to schedule your daily life around these showings. I would not recommend using this company. read more

We made an appointment to see some places, however when we drove north for our appointment, no walk-throughs had been scheduled. The man with whom we had the appointment had to scramble to show us a terrible apartment instead, all while forgetting the keys to the place. What a saga it has been, hmm rental xperts? So we wanted to rent a two bedroom apartment for three people. Which you'd think wouldn't be that big a deal, but these guys made it sound like they were doing us some enormous favor by finding us a place. And they finally did, and while it looked nice at the time, the place is full of problems. Our plumbing is faulty, our livingroom floor is inclined, and our landlords are insane. The first problem though was parking. In our lease, it stated that one tandem parking space was included in the rent. Our building of three units had this written into all three leases, only there's only TWO parking spaces. I had to beg and plead to get a small reduction in rent (50 bucks) so that we wouldn't pay for a space (none of us had cars anyway). The landlord insisted that we go through the Xperts to negotiate, and they basically tried to bully me into just dealing with it and "not rocking the boat" to quote Evan from Xperts. Fast forward a couple months and we've got a problem with our toilet. Our landlords are yelling at us for asking them to get a plumber out here. And when we call rental Xperts to get them to help us negotiate GUESS WHAT? They've terminated their relationship with our landlords! And why? Because they knew the parking issue was crap from the get go! You guys are a bunch of sleazy jerks! read more

My SO and I worked with Randy Perkins to find an apartment. We were very pleased with his attentiveness, knowledge, and he was easy to work with. We understand the Boston market, and know what to expect, and found Randy honest and not pushy at all. He was also very mindful of our (long) list of needs, e.g. pets allowed, viable commute time, space issues, etc. If we found something on the site he hadn't mentioned to us, he was more than willing to show it (even though he was almost always right not to mention it for one reason or another). He was awesome.... low pressure, listened to us, really knew the area. I would gladly give him *6* stars. We rented an apartment in no time and are excited to move in. I learned _after_ moving in that the guy downstairs smoked and it constantly blew into my apartment. I felt like the agent was rushing me and hoping I just didn't notice. Stupidly, I didn't. One star for the agent Brendan + Five stars for Matt Ellis = Three-star average. Slimy Brendan -- Working with the guy was off-putting and a tad scary. Initially he appeared to be nice, friendly, and easy-going but when his true colors showed he became Mad Madame Mim (you know you loved The Sword in the Stone as a kid). He did a 180 and turned into an irate fuming pink dragon when my boyfriend and his roommate needed time to think over an apartment before signing. He was utterly manic and totally put them off signing an apartment with him or working with this agency again. 2 years later having no luck with CL I turned to ApartmentX: Nice Matt -- Matt found me the apartment I currently live in. It was off-season and the pickings were extremely slim and I had a big list of restrictions to boot. Matt showed me apartments one day that I didn't care for and actually followed up (!) and kept searching for apartments to fulfill my request until he found the one that was right for me. He was kind, not pushy whatsoever, and had none of that real estate/rental agent slime which seems to be so prevalent in Boston agents. Outside of CL, ApartmentX has a huge cap on the rental market in Cambridge, Somerville, and Arlington. If you find yourself employing their services, make sure you go with Matt Ellis based out of their Porter Square office. read more

I also asked to see some other apartments on their website which he was always happy to oblige, and would tell me if he thought the apartment wasn't worth my time. We had a pretty bad experience with these guys. So, we found an apartment that we loved on Hotpads, contacted the agent, who of course put some pressure on to try to see it before we went out of town for the weekend, so we had to see it the same day. Which, fine, no big deal. Then we show up and the agent (Ezra was his name) was late to begin with, and then put a form in my hand saying he'd notified us about their broker fee, which, by the way, wasn't advertised on the site we found the listing on, so that was a bit of a surprise. Still though, I can roll with that, no big deal. So we tour the place, it's great, the tenant is home and we get to ask her some questions, and ultimately we decided it was time to move on the apartment. We follow Ezra back to ARE, and sit down to start signing paperwork. We did have to haggle a little bit about the broker fee, which ultimately we agreed to pay at a later date, as long as it was before move in (This was in May for a Sept 1 move in). So, we go on our way, optimistic about having found our perfect first apartment to move into as a married couple. Here's where it all goes south. A few hours later, Ezra calls us with some bad news. He then tells us that the landlord has decided, since the apartment had only been recently listed, and because we moved on it so fast, to relist the apartment at a higher price. So, that was pretty shocking, but we said, ok well, fine, not Ezra's fault, guess we'll just keep looking. So then we get to this morning, cruising around hotpads and craigslist looking for a new place to check out, and what should pop up, but that same apartment, listed with a different agent at Apartment Rental Experts. So, perplexed, we put a call in to Ezra. Who proceeds to start backpedaling, and evading our questions. We finally got him to admit that he had asked about waving the security deposit... which we did NOT ask him to do, and that made the landlord angry and decide to reject our application. We made an agreement about the broker fee, and he asked the landlord to waive the security deposit, presumably so he could have us give him the funds for the broker fee instead. Never got an explanation about why he told us she'd decided to relist it for a higher price, instead of telling us the truth from the get go. All in all, we felt that the communication from Ezra was very deceitful, and ultimately cost us the opportunity to live in a place we really loved. We will NEVER use Apartment Rental Experts again. They get two stars though because Ezra was capable of answering text messages and calls, which is more than I can say for some agents in the Boston area. read more

I tried to work with this group on two separate occasions and found them staggeringly unprofessional and incompetent. Twice we tried to book an apartment and they were rude, pushy and unhelpful. When we needed the forms sent to us, they were sent with the incorrect information a total of three times. They did not keep us in the loop about apartments that we had already signed the lease for. It's my pleasure to write a review for Matt Slowik. I have been renting for seven years across three different states and I can honestly confirm Matt was the absolute best Realtor I have ever worked with. I am sure many renters can relate to my prior experiences; I respond to an ad for a unit that costs X amount, a Realtor responds, tells me that unit is gone, gathers information on what I am looking for and then begins presenting me with unlivable apartments that also happen to be at the top of my budget. Further, when you express concerns they tell you that with budget X it's the best you should expect. This had been my experience until Matt. Realtors are supposed to be doing a service for you and thus it should be a relationship of professionalism and respect. As a prospective "customer" you should trust that while you may not know the market, they do. We should (in theory) be able to trust a Realtor when they say, "this is the best you are going to find." After I found a listing I thought looked promising, I would contact Matt and he would walk be through all the pros and cons. If it didn't match my needs and he knew it, he would honestly tell me I could do better. Bottom line to anyone that has had bad experiences with Realtors: He never wasted my time. He made me feel that my business was valued. He answered emails carefully, with proper grammar, and exceptional professionalism. I would wholeheartedly recommend him to anyone in their apartment search! read more

In a metro area chock full of useless rental agents, Matt was responsive to my inquiries, which is basically all you can ask for. Though I didn't wind up finding a place through him, at least he provided some reasonable assistance. As opposed to most agents/agencies that either try to show you places that don't fit your criteria, or just wind up ignoring you completely. So for that, 4 stars. read more

My friends and I were looking for an apartment with some almost unreasonably high demands (2 bath, dog, T access...). Scott Allison at the Porter Office was the agent I happened to pull with my first requests months before our move-in date. I found him knowledgable and genuinely helpful. I think much of the criticism of ARE is the fault of land lords. The company has a great website, very easy to browse, nicely formatted, and with a lot of listings. I think their service to land lords must be what gets them the number of listings (which is noticably higher than local competitor Maven, for instance), Unfortunately, the pampered land lords caused us some problems. Availability dates on the website were unreliable ("That tenant wants to extend, won't let us show, and the land lord - on vacation lord knows where - only talks to our managers" poor Scott had to explain). The next place we looked, the land lord demanded to be there for the showing, even with the tenants available to let us in. Fine. We put down a deposit that afternoon, watching Scott call the land lord - and found out two days later (when the land lord called back) that he had accepted a deposit before hearing from Scott. He offered a different apartment in that hosue for a later move-in date...but then let his current tenants extend their lease. Scott had to give us a lot of bad news, and was put in awful positions by more than one land lord more than once. He was, however, good about communicating, didn't give us any hassle about the defunct deposit, and offered to look for not-so-pet-friendly places and negotiate with those land lords on our behalf. read more

I'm not the sort who likes leaving negative reviews (or, honestly, writes reviews much at all), but my experience with Chartise from Apartment Rental Experts deserves it. I emailed about an apartment sometime during the middle of last week. The following day, I called about it and was told that the apartment had been rented. That Friday, I received an email from the agent I had originally contacted, Chartise, asking if we could set up an appointment that Sunday. When I asked why I had been told previously that the apartment had been rented, she told me that it had been put back on the market. Fair enough. We made an appointment for that Sunday at 1:00 PM. Upon arriving on time, we weren't even greeted until I spoke up and asked if Chartise was there. One of the agents called her and nonchalantly informed us that she was about 15-20 minutes away and that we should go to Starbucks or something. We were essentially shooed out of the office and had to find somewhere else to wait, despite there being more than enough chairs for us to wait there. We came back twenty minutes later and she still didn't arrive until a few minutes after that. When she arrived, she informed us that the apartment we had come to see had been rented out. I asked when it had been rented out and she told us it was the day before and, when I asked, claimed she couldn't have called us in advance because she wasn't in that day. Apparently, that meant she couldn't contact us Sunday morning, either. She knew we were travelling from the other side of the state and had a two hour drive to Boston, but she didn't value our time enough to bother informing us or to arrive on time that day. She even went to far as to implicitly blame us by saying that this was why she tried to make an appointment for earlier; she had initially asked if we could meet on Sunday at noon and we pushed it back to one. That one hour would have made absolutely no difference given that the apartment had been rented the day before! She then went through her listings and tried to sell us on an inferior apartment, telling us that we wouldn't find what we were looking for DESPITE US HAVING BEEN THERE TO SEE SUCH A PLACE. She first said that they didn't expect much inventory until September 1st; when I said we could wait, she said that there wouldn't be anything better after that either. After listening to her go on and on without letting either of us get much of a word in edgewise for about twenty minutes, she finally stopped, we said goodbye, and left. All in all, Chartise had absolutely no respect for our time, money, or desires for an apartment. Our experience with her and Apartment Rental Experts was miserable and I would advise anyone looking for an apartment in the area to seek elsewhere. read more

Find stuff on CL, call realtors, they show you one place that you don't fall in love with....so you tell them what you're looking for, but you never hear back from them again. Never mind the fact that many realtors have used-car salesman personalities; the dollar signs in their eyes make it damn near impossible to see anything else, especially your needs. Enter Mat Zimmerman of Apartment Rental Experts. I think I found one of the few great people in this business. Personable and professional, Mat listened to my needs, followed up with me effectively, and met me at my convenience. Mat took me to apartments that met my criteria, and one of them was a winner! If you're looking for a new place, don't bother wasting your time on Craigslist. I spent three months browing CL ads, calling rude, pushy realtors, and viewing apartments to no avail. Save yourself the headache and call Mat. 617.461.0187. He'll find you a great place and treat you like both a valued customer and a friend. read more

Let me start by saying... I absolutely hate brokers... in my experience they never listen when you give your max price range (other than to note that they should show you places that are $200 more than your max), they waste your time showing you places that don't fit the needs you specified, and then they charge you one-month's rent to boot. GOOD NEWS - Apartment Rental Experts is the exception!!! I called Bob after seeing one of his listings on Craigslist. This guy is AMAZING. I made an appointment with him and was pleasantly surprised to see that he paid close attention to my price range and other specifications. Unlike brokers that only show you places above your max price, he actually showed me apartments that were not only within my price range, but even in the middle and lower end of my price range! Bob was also great about continuing to send me places that would work until I found the perfect fit. And, at one point, when a great place came on the market, he called me immediately and scheduled a last-minute showing because he knew it was too good of a deal to last. Indeed, the place was closer to the T, better, bigger, and cheaper than the other places I saw! Bob saw the whole application process through and even went over to the apartment to talk to my landlord about the repairs I suggested prior to my moving in. Bob went above and beyond every expectation I had going in. Definitely call and ask for him specifically. And if he's not available, all the other brokers there seemed very professional and helpful as well. read more

This is a review for Adam Keslar, who was our agent with Apartment Rental Experts. We were looking for a studio or 1-bedroom apartment for our college student and were hoping we could find something without coming to Boston for an unspecified period of time. Adam was incredibly helpful and professional. He was willing to go to apartments and show them to us on FaceTime. He was polite and friendly about our limited budget where other realtors seemed skeptical or contemptuous about us only having $1500 per month to spend. He didn't try to persuade us to increase our budget. When I was anxious about sending the first month's rent to put in the application without yet having a lease, he was very reassuring. I worked with Apartment Rental Experts to find a new place for my boyfriend and I. I had worked with them when I first moved to Cambridge and felt they were the best in the area. We worked with Tim Schmidt who was really great. No Bullsh** and helped us get exactly what we needed. Definitely ask for him. We told him exactly what we wanted and he set up some great places for us to see. On top of this these guys really helped me out in a pinch when I actually locked myself out of my current apartment which they were also showing. Two reps - Eric and Brandon were so awesome to deal with and stopped what they were doing to give us a hand. All in all I would definitely recommend these guys. I contacted Apartment Rental Experts about an apartment in Davis Square. The first agent with whom I spoke was relatively unresponsive and didn't alert me to apartments that met my criteria and that I found myself on the company's website. However, after contacting Apartment Rental Experts again, I was put in touch with Benjamin Tauber, who was absolutely fantastic. Not only did he manage to find me the perfect place in only 2 days, but he was so quick to respond to my inquiries that he actually emailed me to tell me at one point that he was lunch, and hence couldn't look up the apartment addresses immediately. All in all, I was quite happy with Apartment Rental Experts, and I was extremely happy to be working with Benjamin Tauber. Chartise from Apartment Rental Experts has to be the best and most helpful realtor I've ever come across. Several examples: -After a place we'd been planning to look at got rented before we could see it, Chartise emailed us several other ideas. One of them caught our eye, so we asked Chartise if she could see it. She wrote back saying that yes, we could, but this particular apartment had oil heat, so she wanted to make sure we were okay with that. The listing did mention oil heat, but we hadn't even noticed. A lot of realtors simply would have kept silent about it and hoped that the tenants would sign the lease without asking about the heat (which, to be honest, we very well might have done). We really appreciated the effort Chartise took to make sure we had no unpleasant surprises. -We responded to Chartise that yes, we'd still like to see it and that oil heat was okay, although to be honest, we didn't really know what it entailed. Rather than just saying, "Great, see you there," Chartise wrote us back with a long, detailed explanation of what oil heat would require of us, the benefits and drawbacks, etc. Again, she could have just tried to gloss over it and not bring it up again, or minimize the potential downsides, but she gave us an accurate picture and really wanted to make sure we were okay with it. -During the actual showing, Chartise offered proactively to call the current tenant (who wasn't home during the showing) to ask them what their typical heat costs were. We would have asked about it if she hadn't brought it up, but I never would have expected a realtor to offer that kind of help proactively. Chartise was very much committed to helping us find a place we would like, not just making a sale as quickly as possible with no regard for our satisfaction. Especially in an apartment-hunting environment where negative experiences tend to be more or less the norm, we really appreciated the great help she gave us. read more

So... my wife and I had one day to find an apartment for my son moving from Silicon Valley to new tech job in greater Boston area. We are from New York City and I called several brokers who, as it turns out, were less than fully forthcoming. I didn't rent an appartment through them since I'd found something with a different realtor, but, I wanted to give a positive review to Sagar (sagar@apartmentx.com), the person I dealt with at Apartment X. He's a nice guy, wasn't pushy to get me to sign, answered any questions I had, including personal questions I posed trying to see beyond someone trying to gain a commision, and was quite honest with me if he thought some places he showed me weren't worth it. He was also prompt with emails and phone calls, with a day or less turn-around. Give him a try if you find anything you like from them!
