I did my walk around North Park and expected to see a line waiting for a cut. The barber and salon restriction was just lifted and surprisingly Barber had no customers! Fantastic old school barber shop. I got a clipper skin fade, short but not too short on the top, nice conversation but nothing too serious. 1960s Western TV shows on the tube. In and out quickly and $25 bucks plus tip. In a few more years I get a senior discount (ha ha). Convenient location close to Target Express. read more

Raymonds is still (and will remain) my go-to spot for a cut in SD. Whether sittin there kickin it with Felipe, reminiscing about University Ave of the past, watching somethin funny on the TV screen, talkin about classic rides and the photos on the walls. Or coolin out with Javier, checkin up on how the kids are doing, or talking about this weeks stock market play while he hits my dome with a 1 1/2 shave to get me proper for the next few weeks...its always good vibes and good times up in Raymond's. One of the few, true barber shops still in existence, you dont go here for a $7 "Supercut".....nah, you step in here and right away you smell the classic barber shop products in the air, you hear the conversations onna personal level going on with the other patrons, you see the board on the wall with the fair prices; and you know...yea, i'm in the right spot. At Raymond's, you feel the love, you get asked: "How ya want the back? Rounded, Tapered, Squared? What number on top? ETC...When the cut is finished, the experience is not. Nope, that's when they pull out the straight razor, truly old school, and bless the back of ya neck...apply some of that old school aftershave, and it sinks in like "damn my money has been well spent today!" Supporting the local business owner, who in turn, supports ya head with the most official cut you'll get anywhere! I could go on and on with the reasons to get over to Raymond's, but ya just gotta go there yourself and experience thee "experience"! Good haircut. Fair price. I would say it is on the higher end for your standard barber shop costs though. Then again, $17 for a good haircut isn't terribly bad either. Waited a while. Not sure about appointments. I would check that before going again. *EDIT* Went back hre for a haircut recently. The younger guy told me to come back at a specific time later in the day. I did... it was just he and I there... which apparently means he can change the price on me? Not too sure but why do I have to pay $25 now? Never going back. AMAZING!! My son is only 15 months old and I asked for the fagther to give him a mowhawk, but to fade into it so it looked a little bit softer than the traditional mowhawk. He said he would do his best and in about 10 minutes my little guy had the greatest haircut. This was a difficult hair cut since we came here because our family barber back in Santa Maria had a health emergancy and was hospitalized. I told the father and his son about my barber and what had happenned, they took down his information and said they were going to reach out to him and offer him encouragement. They are amazing professionals with amazing hearts. Once we are finished with our military transfer to San Diego we will be regular customers and plan on telling ALL of our friends about this amazing business. I have no hair. Yet I find myself coming here for a haircut. I own a pair of clippers. And I can do the job myself. But coming to Raymond's is borderline ritualistic. It's the people that keep me coming back. The care and attention to detail that the barbers provide. Although the neighborhood is saturated with barbershops. This is the one to come to. Fast. Cheap. A fine family owned barbershop that's been around for 30 years. It was not surprising that they've lasted that long after I popped in the other day. Even though it was past closing Javier stuck around to give me a quick line up in the back. Most people putting in overtime would probably hurry through it, but not at Raymond's. I got the full treatment including a neck shave and all. They truly are masters of their craft and their reviews show how much people love them. They're special is a $3 haircut for first time customers, which is insannnnne, but you won't have any problem paying full price after that. Trust. read more

Eric McGinnis, Cesar and the owner are all cool as hell and know how to do a proper cut, every one is cool and days where Eric or Cesar were busy I had the other barbers hook me up like Bobby and the punk rock dude I forgot his name!!! I walked in here and got a haircut. Never tried it before and it looked good and clean, and I was feeling pretty lucky. Then, with my new haircut, I went next door to the thrift store and I got lucky when I found two jackets that were exactly my size. Then, with my new haircut, I went to checkout and I got lucky when it was 50% off. Then, with my new haircut, I met this woman and I got lucky when... well, I got lucky. So the moral of the story kids is... Go to Raymond's. Get Lucky. Anyways, so I walked in here and it was tiny, tiny. Some interesting pictures and artwork adorned the walls. I was able to be seated immediately, and a few minutes later, my hair was cut just like I wanted it to. Then my barber took a straight razor out and cleaned it up perfectly. I used to go to Winn's barber shop in Hillcrest, but finding a barber I liked in their ever-changing mix of mostly lackluster, get-em-in-get-em-out barbers was not to my liking -- and when the place was full, I kept getting stuck with this incredibly lousy guy who spoke Engrish to me and had an unsharpened clippers that would be actually painful. That being the last straw, I decided to hunt around in my North Park neighborhood a bit. One day, I noticed a tiny, 8-foot-wide barber shop called Raymond's right next to Controversial Bookstore -- and I resolved to go there and check 'em out next time I needed my locks trimmed. I figured that I would try out different places in North Park until I found one that I liked. I didn't realize, however, that it would be the FIRST place I tried before I stopped looking. I'm totally sold on Raymond's. It's run by Javier the grandson of the original owner (Raymond, of course) who opened the shop in 1978 (the same year of the PSA crash on Dwight and Boundary streets in North Park, as some side trivia). I'm kinda picky about all the exact lengths that I want my head and beard trimmed to, but Javier was up for the task. He did it waaaaay better (and for less dough) than the dull-bladed Hillcrest lads over at Winn's -- and, in the morning, there was no wait. ALSO, dude tells me they are open until 8:00, which, for the after-work crowd, is perfecto! As part of their offerings at Raymond's, Javier does a hot-foam/flat-blade razor shave of the back/sides of your neck -- and you can get picky about eyebrows and ear-shaves and beard shapes and dude is flexible and doesn't whine or look at his clock or complain in Engrish to you. Also, Javier has good taste in music, and I don't have to listen to Winn's lousy mix of Donna Summers hits. OH, and did I mention how tired of Winn's I am? Go in the morning and it's easy to park on Grim Ave for free before the after-work gym/restaurant/Ray-Street crowd starts filling up the free street parking. read more

Simple. Lack of fancy decor. Only two chairs. Fast and efficient service. Maxim magazines along the walls for patrons to peruse. This is definitely a guys' place. So why do I end up here? I get suckered into accompanying my boyfriend to cut his hair. It's always the same. I will get lured to eat somewhere near by and what a coincidence...afterward, he can get a cut. How convenient, right!? =/ I guess it's payback for all the times I've made him go into a Forever 21 or Sanrio store...which, in my defense, hasn't been that many times. At least they are fast and they do a pretty decent job. I am always fairly jealous of how cheap guy hair cuts are. As a side note, he prefers the older gentleman. He has been more satisfied with how he has cut his hair versus the younger guy. The young guy never messed up his hair but he had a different approach to hair cutting that wasn't his style. read more

After hearing of this Barber Shop from a co-worker I figured I'd give it a shot since it is only a few blocks from where I work on University Ave. Raymond's has a very unimposing store front, I almost couldn't find it amongst all of the larger signs erected during the North Park Face lift. Once I walked in I was greeted with smiles, and a "what can I do for you." My hair cut took less the 20 minutes, and all the while I enjoyed some nice soothing tunes, and good conversation. The hair cut only cost $13, and the cut was better then Two Roses, and I didn't have to wait two hours, and it isn't in the ghetto. So I think I found my new barber shop. read more

"The Shop" I love the last review, and have to comment on "The Shop". Lost in time, from old pictures of "North Park", to the black and white floor. You go and and instantly you know your in a "Real" barber shop! Felipe is the son of the original owner, Raymond! Felipe has known me since I was born. As a matter afact, he and my parents ALL went to barber school together. So when my parents stopped cutting my hair, Felipe's at "Raymonds" shop was no doubt the place to go! The look, feel, and atmosphere is always good. Conversation is a must, and you can't help talk about him restoring his car, or whatever topic you talked about last. For me, it usually centers around my family, for he knows them all! So we talk about the who's, who, the what is what, and who is where! Love it, like sitting in my family garage. Don't worry about the wait...cause there might be one. But think of it this way, there is a reason for it! Next time you go stop in...tell him "Vee Vee" sent you! He'll know who I am !!!! Asians might prefer to look eslewhere... Got a cut today by the younger barber early afternoon, not too busy. Gave specific instructions, couldn't see what he was doing because I was never facing the mirror. In short, pretty disappointed despite all the positive reviews. Barber was on his headset on a call for 20 minutes, first sign that I should have been a little worried. I went home and had to bust out the trimmer to clean hundreds of stray uneven hairs. The back of my head has little uneven dents. Maybe he didn't know how to cut thick straight asian hair. Regardless, I give two stars for relatively decent price at $14 plus $2 tip, and clean outline for sideburns and around ear and neck. I'll have to build up enough courage to go back and see if the senior barber's experience will come through. Until then, happy hat month for me. read more

As a man who has longer hair I usually have only the option of going to a chain and getting my hair cut. I used to frequent barbers when I had shorter hair but I always worried about handing over my lovely locks to a barber more accustomed to giving fades and trimming shorter hair. My fears were COMPLETEY misplaced. This place is the REAL deal. These guys know what they are doing and they gave me without a doubt the best haircut I've ever received. Jamie was attentive and took direct and cut my hair EXACTLY like I wanted it, his primary concern was getting it right and he was extremely friendly. If you need a haircut, long, short or medium this is the place to go. I haven't had a better cut in the 10 years I've lived in San Diego. And the price is fantastic! read more

When I decided to get my long flowing locks shorn off, my friend Juju insisted I give his new barber shop a try. So I did. Now I sport a clean cut (3.5 on top and skin fade) and my parents are confused as to whether or not I have joined the Marines everytime they see me. I like to keep them guessing. Javier and Felipe are true pros and they'll remember regular customers. I've only been going for 3 months and we're able to pick up our conversation from where we left off, which impressed me to no end because I can't even do that with some of my friends sometimes. Raymond's is an old school barber shop in every sense of the word. On a given afternoon you can witness a game of dominoes going on while the conversation runs from basketball to neighborhood goings-on to politics to cars etc. etc. All I need to complete my experience is to have Eddie Murphy in his Jewish getup telling the soup story and I'd never leave. All that and a clean haircut for $12. It's a great way to spend a half hour. Just came back from my first visit to Raymond's and let me just say that they earned themselves a new customer! First and foremost, yes the barbers there are skilled. I didn't ask for his name, but I'm pretty sure I had Felipe cut my hair and he did an excellent job. Second, while he cut my hair we had a nice talk that wasn't fake. And I appreciate that just as much as the hair cut. Felipe even offered to give me the Yelp $3 discount and I gave him the $3 back as a tip -- because I was happy with the experience. This shop is run by a father and son. Before them the grandfather cut hair. Both men are excellent barbers, not hairstylists. These are real barbers who finish the haircut with a straight razor trim lowering my ears. I have had more complements about my hair after I have it cut by these men than any where else I have been. Going here is like when I would go with my dad to get a hair cut except I no longer sit on the booster seat and get a ball of chewing gum when the hair cut is over. read more

While you may have a wait depending on when you go, these gents get you in and out quick. I've had great cuts by both Felipe and Javier, but I usually wait for Felipe. I was in San Diego for 3 months and struggled to find a good place for an affordable cut. The places in walking distance of Hillcrest were overpriced and poorly rated. I took the short drive to Raymond's and gave it a shot. I made it there twice. On both occasions the wait was only a few minutes. Both cuts were by the father. Both of the gentleman engaged me in conversation and made me feel welcome. The cut was great. Time was taken to make sure I was satisfied. The cut was finished with a hot lather back-of-the-neck shave. I left feeling clean and looking sharp. There is street parking all around the location, I never had a problem finding a spot. The shop is small, no frills, so don't go expecting more than a place to get a hair cut. Cost was $15 for a basic cut, compared to $24-40 in Hillcrest. I love this shop and these guys. Next time I'm in San Diego I know where to go for a great cut at a good price. read more

I ambled in here today in a non-premeditated fashion when outside for a dose of sunlight when I realized that I was quite shaggy. Javier--the 3rd generation family owner and barber here--greeted me with a genuine smile. He proceeded to give me a remarkable haircut in an appropriate amount of time. It's notable that the cut concluded with use of a straight edge razor on the rear and sides. I loved this don't see this enough anymore! An even MORE subjective aside... As someone who is "overly" conscious (edit: anxious) of social dynamics, sometimes haircuts can be uncomfortable situations. Reason? I never know if I'm being uncouth for my level of chat/small-talk.
