I don't really yelp but I was so pleased I wanted to take the time to post... I own a highly modified 1989 VW Vanagon Syncro. I was on a long road trip from the States and needed to get back in a hurry. My van had started to show issues all the way in Golden. I crossed over from Golden to Banff to Canmore to Calgary visiting every shop along the way. I had to have visited 12+ shops over the course of 2 days. It was disheartening, they were either too busy to take me in for the next few days or looked at my car and concluded it would be too difficult of a job. I visited all the reputable VW specialty shops as well and they quoted me 4-10hrs for the job. I found Raybern Motors on roadhaus.com and yelp with very few reviews but all positive. I called Otto and he said bring it in. He knew I needed to get home. His wife works front office and Otto is the man in the back. Lovely couple! They said they would get me going as soon as possible. He knocked it out in 2 hrs. No drama no complaining like the other shops about how difficult the job was. After being grounded and stuck at a hotel for 2 days, you can imagine how happy I was when he called me to tell me the van was done within the same day at at least half the cost of the other VW speciality shops! If I lived near Raybern, Otto would definitely be my primary mechanic for my very finnicky van. As you can see, I highly recommend him. I brought my Mercedes to Otto after reading the other positive Yelp reviews. I was very happy with my service as compared to what I've experienced at other mechanics. First I actually met Otto as opposed to all contact going through a receptionist which made communicating the problem simpler. And first thing, we went for a drive in my car together so I could explain what was wrong, he knew what the cause of the problem was right away and he explained it all to me. I'm not a car expert, but I'm always eager to learn more so I appreciated communicating directly with Otto and how he explained everything. After my car was fixed he even brought me back into the shop to show me the parts he had replaced and why. Otto and Tommy (the other mechanic) are both very friendly, open and honest about what they're finding with your car. The way they operate really engenders a sense of trust. When I had my Jaguar, Otto was the first mechanic I met that did not look at me like a walking mortgage payment when I walked in the door. A couple of the jobs that he did for me were about a third of what I was quoted by Jaguar Calgary. When he replaced parts in my car he showed me the parts he took out and what was wrong with them. No one has done that for me since, well, my dad. Even though he complained to me bitterly about how expensive Jaguar parts were every time I was there, I loved it because of the charming way he said 'Yag-u-arr'. I drive by his shop sometimes on my way to work and I often see him in his yard walking around cars with his customers, often young men, and I think the work he does, mentoring people about their cars and taking time with them is so much greater than the very excellent work he does with automobiles. If he doesn't know how to fix your car, he knows someone who does. Otto is the guy that knows the guy which is so much more important than knowing everything. I needed work done on my transmission that he admitted he did not know how to do. He asked me, "You want cheap, or you want best?" I told him I wanted the best, so that 's what he got me; he called some poor guy out of retirement at Chestermere to fix my car, and I have no doubt it still cost me less than what I would have paid at the dealership. I would definitely recommend Otto and his wife! They did a thorough job on my car and they were hundreds of dollars cheaper than any one else. He was extremely knowledgable in this field and he made a point of showing what he did and parts her removed. I would trust this business before anyone else. His one of the most honest and skilled mechanic you find in the city of Calgary. I assure you, you will never get "overcharged" or "additional" work recommended.
