This area was also where in the evening there were quite a fair number of unfortunate homeless peoples in the streets. This subway station is a living statement of Berlin's history. Founded as "Danziger Strasse"in the…read more1900's, it was renamed to "Dimitroff Strasse" after a Bulgarian Military general during the Socialist times. It eventually became "Eberswalder Strasse", referencing a nearby street, after the wall came down. Another fun fact is that this underground station is actually above the ground - parts of the subway line U2 run overground in the middle of Schönhauser Allee. This part of the line was finished in the 1910s and is running ever since. Today, the intersection Schönhauser Allee/Pappelallee/Danziger Straße/Kastanienallee is one of the busiest intersections of Prenzlauer Berg. It's a short walk to Mauerpark, Kulturbrauerei, lots of restaurants, boutique shops, and you'll get tram connection to Mitte, Pankow, or Friedrichshain. With the 2.10 Euro ticket you trip can last up to 2 hours which means that you can get out at any stop and proceed your journey with the next bus. And for 6.30 Euro you can travel Bus, S-Bahn and U-Bahn in the zones A and B the whole daylong. Anyway if you start at Alexanderplatz, you will drive past the TV tower, Lustgarten & Museumsinsel / Museums island, Berliner Dom, Humboldt-University, and State Opera (from which it's just a 5 Minute walk to one of the most beautiful Berliner squares Gendarmenmarkt). You will see almost the whole Unter den Linden street. The bus will stop right in front of the Reichstag, from which you can walk to the Brandenburger Tor, Pariser Platz and the Memorial For the Murdered Jews of Europe. From the bus you will catch the sight of the Bundeskanzleramt, Haus der Kulturen der Welt/ House of the Cultures of the World, Schloss Bellevue, Siegessäule/ Victory Column, and Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche/ Memory Church. Mind that most times of the day the bus is as full with people as a cucumber with seeds. No wonder as for many tourists it is the best way to explore Berlin. Take the S-Bahn to get back to the Alexanderplatz and to enjoy a couple of nice views of Berlin or may be to get out at the Hackescher Markt for a relaxing beer in one of the hundrends of street cafes. The S-Bahn is one of the many public transport operations in Berlin, and is basically classed as a…read morehigh-speed railway network. The S-Bahn system has many lines across many stations, and is probably the least accessible in terms of wheelchairs on the network, mainly down to the high step to get on and off the train in most cases, and the fact most of the stations don't seem to have lift or ramp access. The average speed is just short of 40 kmph, which is around 24 miles per hour, which isn't exactly high speed especially when compared to the UK, where we are used to driving 30 miles per hour on normal roads, so this shows this public transportation system is only meant for shorter distance travel such as within Berlin, so could be quite frustrating having to go to a further distanation such as Berlin-Schonefield Airport. The layout of the stations make it more inconvenient than using other public transportation systems such as buses and the U-Bahn which was the main reason I avoided the S-Bahn system, other than when first arriving in Berlin, in favour of the other two modes of transportation, hence the reason I sadly feel the Berlin S-Bahn deserves a single one star rating.

It is located on the U55 line which is quite useful for connections into Bundestag and Berlin Central Station, the overall journey across the line from Brandenburger Tor to the Hauptbanhof (Central Station) is 8 minutes and as I recall, this is the only line this station is on, meaning most likely you're going to have to visit another train station to change, being one of those two, to get the metro into Brandenburger Tor, perhaps because of this, it might just be easier to get the bus as I found to be easier when traveling from my Hotel. I called at this station by chance, hoping to get into Central Station so I used the U55 line to go the full length of the train route which is 8 minutes. There did appear to be one end of the station cornered off, which probably was the place you would get off the train for the U55 here at Brandenburger Tor, so they appeared to be turning and using the other plaform for some reason. This metro station did also seem bright and modern, it didn't seem old, dark and smelly like some trains on the network and also had lift access, warranting a solid three star rating which is supported by the location being meters away from the Brandenburg Gate. 3 star rating due to reasons discussed above, sadly I don't feel it is worth any higher as the station remains understaffed and of course it is only on the U55 line.

I remember the train slowing down through a brightly lit and empty station, except for an East German guard or two.. I still vividly remember the green tiles line the walls of the Unter den Linden (not Brandenburger Tor) station. I had the opportunity to return to the Brandenburger Tor station last year. I was walking down the Unter den Linden and heading towards the Brandenburg gate, where this time I could freely walk through unlike the Berlin Wall days. The station came into view in front of me and I immediately knew that I had been here before (albeit in passing underground). I walked downstairs, walked through the corridors and touched those green tiles. That's quite a reminder of what was and how walls could happen again.

After awhile knowing to check screens and updated paper timetables it was helpful. You may have a train somewhere, but the screen may have a different destination for your location. That can be confusing. This train station offers many amenities and options for dining before or after your arrival. Bathrooms you do have to pay for. That is always a treat with kids. Overall, a good train station option that just needs a little time if you are new to figure it out.

For such an old station it is not run-down nor dated - relatively clean too. The architecture is uncommon and quite amazing with lots of brickwork. What's more amazing is seeing trains going by above ground but within an enclosure!

I highly recommend against FlixBus. Their busses frequently run (very) late, and they don't make…read moreany effort to notify customers (no email/text/call). Whats worse is the busses often pick up in dark parking lots without any seating or protection from the elements, so you could be waiting in the rain or in the dark in an unsafe neighborhood waiting for hours. On top of that, there is no phone number you can contact for support, and the online chat support is inhuman. Here's one experience I had with them, as an example: On March 7, 2024, we arrived to the bus station 15 minutes early, per instructions. The bus station was actually a dark, empty parking lot with no seats and no protection from the elements, in a relatively unsafe part of town. This was doubly bad as it was a rainy evening in Austin and there was no covering in the parking lot. After waiting and the departure time passing, we contacted FlixBus only to find out that the bus was delayed more than 45 minutes. FlixBus made no attempt to contact us via email, text, or phone. Had we been notified, we would have waited in our hotel. Instead, we were left waiting in rain in a dark parking lot. As we waited, we watched the ETA online continue to grow to 55+ minutes. FlixBus put us in an unsafe and uncomfortable situation, and we expected a full refund. I have contacted the support team, and they made no apologies for the delay or lack of communication. Instead, they stated that their policy is that refunds are only issued for delays over two hours. I would have been more forgiving if we had received any notice. Airlines, trains, and other transportation providers notify their customers about delays, and FlixBus should be obligated to do so as well. We were not about to wait in the rain in an unsafe neighborhood with all of our luggage for nearly an hour hoping the bus would come. At least when airlines or trains are delayed they notify customers and you are waiting inside in a safe environment. FlixBus customer support was entirely unempathetic and unhelpful, and seemed to have no concern for the safety of their passengers. I highly recommend against such an uncaring company.

There was a working bathroom on the bus. It was direct from Szczecin Poland to Berlin Alexanderplatz. It was also quite inexpensive. I know it has a lot of bad reviews, but I would ride it again.
