We took the ferry from Auckland to Waiheke Island, got onto the 4 bus route and then got off at the roundabout at the top of the hill. We called the place and the only way to get there was by walking 20 minutes, which is fine, if you're up for it. The staff was super nice, they have an amazing oyster shooter which was great with the Sav Blanc, but their pours- so stiff! They literally poured one mouthful, which was disappointing after how far we came to taste their wine. It's $3/tasting-didn't get any $10 glass. They also have olive oil & honey you can taste. I didn't taste any of those.

The price tag is a little heavy to have endless bottles sitting around MY house. But, if / when I start making a bit more dough, I'm going to buy stock in this place and become a premier wine member at Destiny Bay. The Magna Praemia was my favorite. Very rarely have I found a wine so big also be so balanced and smooth. As I savored each drop, we were treated to a personal tour by the winemaker himself. Did I mention this vineyard is nestled into the lush countryside of a gorgeous island that sits about 30 minutes by boat from Aukland (where you might catch a whale sighting on the trip over)? On our last trip to Waiheke we were invited to the vineyard for a private tour and tasting during the fall harvest. We spent an amazing day picking grapes and tasting some of the best wines I have had anywhere in the world. Thanks, Destiny Bay for a great day out. It was a crowded off-season day on the ferry, so we decided to make a reservation at Batch while we were waiting for our Western Explorer bus at the Waiheke Ferry landing. We skipped all the other vineyards & went straight to Batch in hopes of avoiding the crowds. We are so glad we did. The view was amazing & it wasn't crowded when we arrived. The service was excellent and the food was top shelf. We had the herb bread with olives, risotto, and pavlova. Focusing on just one vineyard was a delightful way to spend the afternoon without trying to do all the vineyards.

Surrounded by rolling hills and immaculate gardens, together with a stunning setting including an Italian style kitchen, displays of Italian cheeses and cured meats, and copper pots and utensils, you will feel like you are in Tuscany. I dined here for my birthday with my family and it was a very memorable meal... and day overall. Everything was exquisite - from the surrounds and views, to the alfresco dining and beautiful food and wine. The service is also very welcoming, professional and friendly. For starters, we enjoyed a glass of prosecco, accompanied by three platters, all of which were beautifully presented and each dish was savoured: - Pane & Olio (selection of homemade grissini, Italian inspired bread and olives with Poderi Crisci olive oil) - Contorni (selection of Antipasti style side dishes, including free range egg frittata, braised capsicums with smoked olives, chargrilled eggplant and garden zucchinis) - Affetato (traditional Italian selection of cured meats, Mozzarella cheese, olives, grissini and truffle paste) For the main course, I loved their Gnocchi alla Norma - Homemade potato gnocchi with buffalo mozzarella, garden eggplant, cherry tomatoes and basil. And of course, dessert. You simply cannot dine at an Italian restaurant without ordering tiramisu. I think Poderi Crisci makes the most superb Tiramisu in all of the land - think Savoiardi sponge fingers with espresso and Italian liqueur, layered with mascarpone sabayon and dusted with rich dark cocoa powder. Dreamy...! And the best part? It arrived at our table with a lit candle, while all the staff sang 'Happy Birthday'. The Tiramisu was divine and it made for a very memorable lunch and birthday. Food aside, service was excellent - the waiters were attentive, welcoming and very knowledgeable about the menu and wine. I would happily re-visit Poderi Crisci in a heartbeat... and I think you should too!
