AVOID THIS PLACE AND ANGIE AT ALL COSTS!!! Angie is the WORST bartender I've ever come across and she should be FIRED. She's extorting customers and overcharging menu prices so she can skim the money off the top and take it home. I was charged more than the menu price for the "tachos". They were $14 instead of $10.50. When I asked Angie, the bartender about it, she said it was 3 dollars extra because there was ground beef on them. The menu clearly says $10.50 for the tachos with ground beef. The menu says it only charges extra for plant based meat and chicken. I wanted to double check with a manager to see if there was a mistake and called at 5:00 pm today asking for a manager. Angie kept trying to avoid my questions when I tried to get information on when I could get ahold of him. She told me "he comes in during the mornings". When I asked what time "mornings" meant, she hung up. UPDATE: Went back the next day. Ordered the French dip and was yet again overcharged. I walked in with 2 coworkers, didn't say a word and paid my bill. When we were handed our receipt, my coworker (a regular who orders food almost everyday) didn't give a tip. Angie goes up to him and says "Oh you don't want to leave a tip? You're just going to come here everyday and not tip? And if being overcharged wasn't enough to prompt me to not tip, her passive aggressive comment sure was. I of course, was not going to tip a condescending, entitled bartenders attitude like that. When I left the bar, she told my coworkers that I was AND I QUOTE a "Rude ###hole" who didn't say anything and didn't tip. She said she was going to kick me out if I hadn't left when I did. Like really?? Because I sat down, paid my tab, and left, I'm an "###hole"?? Like seriously... Angie: "Oh wow, you're just going to come in here and pay for your food without asking me about my day?" That's what I pictured when given the news about what my coworkers told me. Let's backup a second. Don't sleep on the ranger. This place is definitely what most would call a "dive" bar, but to me it's perfect for an evening drink or if you're a Saint Johns local it's a cool place to become a regular. It has everything you would want from a neighborhood bar: Friendly bartenders, strong/cheap drinks, and surprisingly good bar food. Most bar food is good because its fried food and burgers etc. but this stuff actually has some quality to it as well. The fries are handcut, cheap, and the portions are really big. For what it is the ranger is perfect. Is it a good place to go grab a craft cocktail and find some new gourmet recipes? Of course not. Is it somewhere that you can wind down and have a good meal without breaking the bank though? Absolutely. We were looking for a dark bar with good food and a fun atmosphere with TVs or something to entertain us and boy did we find it! Greeted by the friendliest staff ever in a bar loaded with locals we instantly fell in love. All the reviews mentioned how good the food was and then while reading the menu a guy walked by and said "get one of each. It's all good." Ok then! Well, it's true, the food is great! We ate every bite of the burger and Ranger Melt we ordered. Loved the atmosphere, if it wasn't so far from home we would've stayed for a few more rounds. Fantastic, friendly service. Love this place! It has a history from what I hear, and some of it not pretty. But this place is cool. It's half restaurant and half bar, and It's quite well lit, so while it certainly qualifies as "divey", only in the good way do I mean this. The place is kind of divided in two - Ranger Tavern, with pool tables, video poker, and the large bar to your left. On the right is Dub's, where the tables are and the window to order food. Often my first comment about bars with video poker is to just get rid of them. But somehow, at the Ranger tavern - they fit perfectly. Between the games, pool and jukebox, it's kind of a gaming area and has a fun feel. The bartender was very nice. And drinks were wonderfully affordable at $3.30 for a well drink. They weren't super strong, but my friend ordered a double for me (he knows me so well) which was the way to go! To see how great Dub's food was, read that review. Has decided to close early, every single time. Its grimy, there's old regulars that are sleazy, touchy and dangerous behind the wheel. Oh and they pee in the outside the building. Why??? Last chance gulch to getchya drink on, traversing N. Lombard, before it careens over into industrial oblivion and wraps around into Columbia Blvd. Because, you know, it's not like the Lombard 'strip' can ever have enough taverns, cantinas, or sh*t hole shanties.... This is perhaps one of the quintessential N. Portland Taverns. Along with the lightly-regarded and little-known "Your Inn" a couple short blocks away, most of the younger set newcomers to the 'hood are undoubtedly completely unaware of this watering hole. They are filled with "old guard" locals, who would like to keep it that way. The Ranger has been going for over forty years, it hardly needs a boost from the hipster transplant set. The food menu is remarkable in its brevity, fried foods only, from fries to poppers to onion rings to mushrooms and of course chicken strips.... I can't swear to it, but one gets the impression the menu hasn't changed much, if at all, since at least the 1980s... Speaking of the glorious 80s, if you're lucky, you may catch a sight of Len Denton quenching his eternal thirst, here at the Ranger. Denton, for the uninitiated, is also known as local Pro Wrestling legend, The Grappler. "Beat ME.......if you can!" Man, any given night you'll have friendly, old-time locals willing to chat with you and talk shop on all things, including and especially Portland Wrestling (I worked there at the now long-defunct Portland Sports Arena for a brief stint as a teenager, it's now a Baptist Church!). We went in at 12am on a random night after hanging with friends. You see, we consider ourselves "old" now. While our young friends were going out to rage, we decided to go somewhere close to home to enjoy a drink with eachother. We have a two year old at home and it's not often we get a mommy and daddy night. This place got me DRUNK. I had been drinking beers before we arrived but I wanted to kickstart myself. The whole time I was there, I only had two vodka tonics. They were cheap and strong. Needless to say, I was hungover as hell the next day and had to take two naps. Like I said I'm OLD. Let me tell you a story. First of all, it starts with me a little high. Second, it continues w my friends and I deciding to visit the Ranger after a round of Frisbee Golf....don't judge me, I'm not always this way. That night was the most hilarious-terical series of events ever....could have been the beer and cannabis, but I doubt it. The bartender started by buying us rounds of jello shots. I haven't done those bad boys since that night in college when I stood on top of our sorority house and told everyone I was going flying squirrel over into the neighbors pool. Then, when I asked the bartender what she recommended, she offered me a drink called "your mouth, my panties"....a bright pink drink with multiple Schnapps and a few garnishes. (actually pretty good). Don't know if she was hitting on me or not, I do know, however, that I walked away with a tupperware of her homemade blackberry jam she was selling from behind the counter. (side note: I left it in my car and found it moldy a few days later.) The Ranger has now become our unilateral choice when we are feeling most sentimental. A place for us once small-town midwesterners to go to, to remember what it was like when you walked into a bar and they didn't give a shit about what's hip. Don't judge a bar by it's curbside appeal. I did and that's why I hadn't tried this place out in the 2 years I've lived in St. John's. I've waited at the bus stop in front of this place before and it always kinda made me nervous. But really there's nothing to be nervous about. Once I got inside The Ranger, I felt as comfortable as going to my grandpa's for cocktails and beers. One of the best things about this place is the waitress. I simply adored her. She was so super friendly and I kinda wanted her to be my older sister I never had. I got set up with a delicious raspberry cider and sat down with my new purple dino friend, Naurry, to wait for my other yelper friends to arrive (UYE night, baby!). People started showing up and I kindly let Melvin T. know (since he was on his way) that this bar had a TouchTunes Juke Box. I knew he would take that thing over all night and have us bumpin and grindin to 90's hip hop. I was right because one of his songs came on even before he walked in the door. Way to make your entrance, Melvin! Nicely done. As the night wore on, the jello shots were consumed, Jameson was shared, laughter flowed and booty's jiggled. It's seriously a great neighborhood bar to get cheap drinks, play pool, listen to tunes... PLUS, now that Dub's is at this location.... EAT GREAT FOOD!
