Dr. J is a fantastic! Years ago, my husband was told by a sports medicine specialist that his knee pain would require surgery and there was no guarantee that would solve the problem. After one examination, Dr. Johnson found a slight difference in the length of my husband's legs (not uncommon) and recommended custom shoe inserts. We had them done, and instantly no more pain. We have been going to Dr. Johnson for over 20 years. I first used his services when I couldn't turn my neck due to an injury. The second time my son had a severe ear infection in which they wanted to put tubes in his ears. Dr. Johnson helped me and my sons' ears were cleared. Johnson Chiropractic Office was the worst experience I have ever had with trying to find a new chiropractor after relocating from another city and having an excellent chiropractor for 12 years. He promised after having xrays one year prior by another chiropractor that he would be able to adjust me successfully charging me for his own set of xrays and even though I told him I don't respond to a drop table only manual adjustments. I went in with specific neck pain and the first appt. he didn't even touch my neck. I called him wanting to talk about my disappointment and I decided to drive 3 hours round trip to see my old chiropractor and he adjusted me head to toe and it lasted. Johnson's only response was "Sorry you didn't get your miracle cure". But I did get my miracle cure from someone who knows what they are doing and was successful from the first appt. 12 years ago. His wife, the Office manager was also rude when I called and she told me to "Grow up". I will say Andrea at the front desk has always been very polite and professional. read more

I do not recommend this chiropractor!! First of all, I sat in his office for 30 past my scheduled appt time before he actually came into the treatment room to see me. He spent more time talking about his missionary work to Guatemala "to treat the poor people" (his words, not mine!) and what his kids do for a living than actually taking a proper patient history from me. He never asked me the mechanism of my injury. He NEVER assessed my range of motion. Instead, he depended on a device to measure the heat being given off at each of my joint segments. He didn't care about patient comfort at all-- he actually sat me facing the window in which the 4pm sun was glaring in my eyes and I could see all the dust particles floating around his office (which made it obvious he hadn't cleaned in a while) . I am a Physical Therapist and certified orthopedic manual therapist myself. I went into his office with a very good idea of what needed to be manipulated. I told him I thought I had a rib out of place due to a forceful sneeze and that I could not take a deep breath without pain. He NEVER assessed my ribs. His assessment of joint mobility was poor. In fact, he leaned my entire body over to the right side instead of moving one joint segment and then said that the joint was moving to the right okay. His manipulation technique was mediocre at best. He relied more on brute force rather than solid technique to mobilize the joints. And the worst part is he never treated my right side at all which is where I am absolutely certain i was locked up. He suggested I pay an extra $200 for x-rays-- which were completely unnecessary because this was an acute situation and I already knew what the problem was. We were not trying to diagnose any pathology and these would have most likely been a waste of money. I also told him I was having numbness in the ulnar distribution of my hand-- but then I specifically had to request that he mobilize my C7-T1 junction (which is where that nerve root is located). His response was "well it's moving okay, but if you want me to"; which is ridiculous because he never even assessed the mobility at that segment-- he only used his little heat sensor to assess me. Not to mention he then mobilized it seated position which I feel did nothing for me; and again only treated the left side. At one point he even had me kneel down over a box-style treatment stool and proceeded to strap my head down in an uncomfortable position with my cervical spine in a slightly extended position. He then attempted to mobilize my thoracic spine (again, only on the left). Immediately after, he said "let's come back over here and reassess" without asking how it felt. I explained that the indication of whether it worked would be if I could inspire without a stabbing pain. The pain was still there (on the right). Then he stated that this may take a few visits and suggested that I come back again to manipulate that area. He also said "well your a PT so you know sometimes the problem is in a different place from where the pain is". Yes , true-- but not his time!! This type of visit may be what gives chiropractors a bad name!! I did not need to establish a regular Chiro schedule-- I simply needed a R side thoracic and rib manipulation and a right side cervico -thoracic joint manipulation. These are the same areas that I have had issues with in the past. Every few years I need a one-time adjustment to make me feel comfortable again and get my neck mobility back to normal. All he heard from my mouth as "new patient new patient. new patient" and he went straight to the x-rays and multiple visits. Maybe if he had skilled technique and listened to his patients history , I would consider going back. Then the front desk wanted to charge me extra for my visit. Are you kidding me-- he didn't even adjust my right side which was what needed adjusting. I can't believe I wasted my time and money on this visit. Luckily I am not in any greater discomfort. However I feel exactly as I did before seeing him. I still cannot turn my head to the right and I still cannot take a deep breath without pain. Not a successful treatment if you ask me. Most chiros will reassess your mobility and keep trying until you feel at least slightly better. He NEVER asked how I felt. He just rushed me out of his treatment room and suggested I make another appointment. Don't waste your time here. There are plenty of other Chiropractors in the Monterey area. read more

Dr. Johnson has been my chiropractor since 2010. I first started seeing Chiropractors in 1997 after I was hit by cars TWICE riding my bicycle to community college in Florida. Chiropractors have kept me head ache and back pain free throughout most of my adult life since these early accidents and following other subsequent accidents and traumas. However, not all chiropractors are created equal. I've been to numerous chiropractors only once and did not return because they simply did not have the gift. Dr. Johnson has the gift. His adjustments are some the best I've ever had. We are lucky to have him in Monterey. Chiropractors as skillful as Dr. Johnson are a rare find and well worth returning to regularly for trauma recovery and for long term maintenance of a healthy skeletal structure. Dr. Johnson is amazing. He has been my chiropractor for the last 20 years and it is because of him that I have never had any chronic problems. For example, last week I thought I had slightly twisted my knee after a run because it hurt every time I sat or stood up. When I went to see Dr. Johnson he told me that my hip joint was stuck, causing the pain in my knee. He adjusted my hip and I haven't had any problems since. Dr. Johnson did a great job for me! After I threw my back out of alignment, he was able to return it to the correct position and function. The stabbing pain is gone, and I have much improved range of motion after his adjustment. I am a retired U.S. Army Paratrooper, and have had some "hard parachute landings" that have left me with recurring back and neck problems. He is better at adjusting my spine into position than the many other Chiropractors, Physical Therapists and Osteopaths that I have been treated by in the last 34 years. I've been a patient of doctor Johnson for more than a year now. I started because this is where the rest of my family went and I am very glad I did. The chiropractic assistants, Alarice and Ellie, are nice and friendly. You never wait long for the doctor and he is very personable. Dr. Johnson is a great doctor and can always help and will happily help with any problem you may have. I have enjoyed coming to dr Johnson's practice so much that I am currently Interning there and help around the office regularly.
