Taco Tuesday's are busy! Anticipate a wait for the dining room if you go around the dinner hour. Thankfully we found two open seats at the bar at 6pm. I always enjoy the chips and salsa at Mexican restaurants and Rancho Viejo did not disappoint. We had hot chips and fresh salsa on the counter within several minutes of being seated. The margarita was refreshing and boozy. Standard fare was offered on their menu: rice, beans, enchiladas, tacos and more. The food arrived piping hot and quickly after ordering. It's nothing to write home about and it satisfied our craving for tacos on Tuesday. There was a hustle and bustle in the dining room as they were short staffed on the evening we visited. We appreciated the prompt service we had at the bar. Our only complaint was the bathrooms were gross. Genuinely don't know why or how people love this restaurant. Came for dinner after a friend's baptism. Got seated right away (idk if we had a reservation or not lol) but the waiter was rude and disrespectful to an old black woman in our group who was nothing but kind to him. He up charged us by giving us something completely different than we asked for that costed more. He (server) walked away part way through when someone in our group was talking to him. Disrespectful and disgusting food. I've been to their last location too across from Tim hortans and the food was just as bad. That time I ordered a quesadilla and it came served in a POOL of water??? Probably the worst Mexican food/drinks I have ever had. The bar was low, visiting from Colorado. The service was fine, very friendly. We sat outside, so the ambiance was fine too. But it went downhill quickly from there. First the margs. They didn't know what a coin style was. She asked if I'd like less margarita mix in it (yes) and if so did I want it stronger? (yes). It was so sickeningly sweet - like a mix of Tang and Gatorade that all three of us left our margs on the table still half full. Wasn't worth sucking down that fishbowl of fake sugar water in the hopes of feeling the tequila. The chips were fine. The "salsa" was serviceable, as would any out of the jar/can "salsa" would be, but not something made fresh with tomato, onion, jalapeño and cilantro. But the food. It was almost as if I could hear the whirring of the can openers and the dings of the microwave. I did eat all of the rice and the plop of guacamole. But the rest was just terrible. No green chile. No sauteed veggies. Weird "cheese" sauces that you would never find on Mexican food. I had the enchilada combo, something like La Bandana, forget the name. The beef one was disgusting - obviously something like ground beef and hamburger helper. Did I mention disgusting? Chicken was semi-paletable, no spices, and enchilada sauce from a can. In the end, none of us finished our meals or our margaritas, and had to go to a nearby brewpub for a fresh IPA to cleanse our pallets. A "real" Mexican restaurant would kill in this town. First time here and would come back if I was in this area again (from Michigan). I was a little taken aback when we first entered - the decor and booths are a bit gaudy but I was darn hungry so I stuck around. The waiter was very attentive and quick to refill drinks. The chips were warm and the salsa was a wee bit chunky. I could have made a meal out of the chips and salsa. I was a bit tired and just wanted tacos - my fav comfort food. I can't eat dairy so I just got ground beef tacos with lettuce and then added some of the salsa to it. The food here is yummy, and there is good vegetarian options, but the service is some of the worst I've experienced. In all fairness they were very busy, but after being sat and having our order taken we waited over an hour for food, and then another 20 min after we finished eating for the check. This place was my comfort spot during college. When I was sad, I went to Rancho. When I had something to celebrate, I went to Rancho. Me and my boyfriend made every excuse in the book to go here so often the waitress started saying "welcome back". That said, you need to know what to order to get the best experience. My common orders were the chicken flautas, shrimp fajitas, Texas fajitas (really any fajitas), and la bandera when I still ate gluten. My boyfriend was obsessed with the Santa Fe burrito and refused to get anything else. We often shared the chorizo queso and a pina colada as well (they are huge). There was a mishap with the order as well. When calling, make sure you get an order number or they are sure who you are. There was confusion about the order and though we could see it waiting for us on the counter, they said the order was not ready. I'm giving generous points for atmosphere here, because the food and drinks are marginal at best. This was my second visit to this location. I do like what they've done with the space - I've been in the building during each of its last 3 iterations and this is a great use of the space for a seated meal. The service is very friendly, I'll give them that. I wish the server had visited the table a lot more frequently, but everyone we dealt with was cheerful at least. I ordered a raspberry margarita - it was smaller than I expected and had very little flavor (and apparently zero alcohol). For dinner, I ordered the Chicken Flautas. Again, not much flavor but at least a cup of sour cream on the side. Don't get me wrong, I love me some sour cream but yikes. I think I expected some richer seasonings and stuffing in the flautas. They were definitely edible, but lacking. One thing I can say is that their chips and salsa (both homemade as far as I can tell) were endless and delicious. Phone ordering was easy, food was ready in 20 minutes, nicely packaged and still fresh after the 30 minute drive home. Friendly and prompt service, bringing food right out to my car. Felt safe with masks and social distancing. Even in the face of stupid covid, we got a warm feeling from the staff. Some of the best Mexican we have had in a long time. I'm a big fan of this restaurant! The service is outstanding and the food has always been delicious on the three occasions that I've been there. We went out to celebrate my aunts birthday and they made her day very special by giving her a free ice cream sundae and singing happy birthday. They always give you free chips and salsa which is a huge plus for me when I'm craving Mexican food and the salsa is delicious! I was a bit put off by the charge for takeout, it's only 30 cents but come on. The to go order also included chips and aside of salsa which was nice. I tried to buy a gift certificate but they couldn't find any or didn't know how to do it. On the menu the chicken taco says grilled chicken with rice, beans, tomatillo sauce n pico de gallo. The side taco with lunch requested as chicken isn't that, it is a roasted or poached chicken with lettuce and cheese. The chili relleno was substantial and seeded, extra star for that! Molcajete "volcanic" is huge, it was ordered as a mixed plate so there was veg, beef, chicken and fish. I heard it's fantastic. read more

Been here the one time a few months ago wanted to give it another go and i am so happy I did! The food was excellent, hot and fresh. The menus seemed different. More organized and easier to read. (Dont know if they actually changed them) Our waitress was killing it! She acted almost as if we were all long lost friends catching up. Might I add she also makes the best Cosmo I have ever had! Always tending to our needs or just coming over to chit chat. She is definitely the favorite of the place. I am usually patient during this "pandemic " but for some reason I ran out of patience today. Service was also slow and the server had a bit of an attitude. One of the best Mexican restaurants I have ever eaten at. The salsa with the chips is really good, mild and a little chunky. The chips are always warm. My favorite dish is their carne asada tacos. This is a great place for a group of people and is usually not too busy. read more
