Decided to get way from our hotel in Ponce, looked up Rancho Playero on Yelp, pictures were great but didn't really do justice to the food. The food was phenomenal, fresh, delicious and worth the short travel and price, which was very reasonable. Our waiter who maybe the owner also recommended great dishes, each dish was perfect and no leftovers. We ordered shrimp empanadas to go, no pictures we ate them before we could take them. Place is very casual, easy to find, prices are great food is fantastic. Adventure away from the hotel and come eat here! You will not be disappointed at all. What a pleasant surprise. We spent the day at the beach and looked for a sea food restaurant and found this gem. Had some bacalaitos and they were NOT greasy! They were crunchy and savory. My husband's "lasagna" was a bowl of cheese with a shrimp. My rice was hard, old and tasteless my steak was gamy and bland felt like I was chewing it forever! This is Mere fish, very lightly battered and fried golden light. I had it with "tostones", one of my favorite Puertorican finger foods. The staff was great, very friendly. Impressed with the good YELP reviews of Rancho Playero, five of us dined there at 7:30 on Saturday night. It turned out to be quite a disappointment. The place looks okay, appeared clean and has a pleasant ambiance but there were only three other patrons in the place, so maybe we should have taken the hint. We started with some drinks. Some of us ordered parcha ( passion fruit juice) and others a passion fruit sangria. Delicious! I ordered the bacalaiitos appetizers ( codfish fritters) and they were also very tasty and crispy. A good start, and we were hopeful- but things went downhill from there. The sorrullitos appetizer came next. It was plentiful and came piping hot, but they were strangely way too sweet! Then they brought us the entrées. My mofongo with shrimp "al ajillo" was good. The sauce was garlicky and the shrimp were abundant, large and well cooked. I do wish the cook had removed the tails so I wouldn't have to get my fingers covered in garlic sauce to eat them. But the mofongo itself was just okay. Kind of dry. My friend ordered mofongo with chicken. She did not eat the chicken because though she had asked as she was ordering it, it was not real chicken breast meat. Instead it seemed to be some kind of processed or cubed chicken product. With fat. The server never asked how our meal was or why she was not eating her dinner. My other friend ordered carne frita with mofongo. The meat was okay but her mofongo was cold and too dry. She called the waiter and had to ask for some sauce to moisten it and warm it up. Another friend got the worst dish, a truly awful plate of food. Her "medium" churrasco was as thin as the leather sole of your shoe. It was an odd too dark brown color and was obviously very overcooked. In fact, it appeared to have been deep fried! Of the accompanying rice and beans she was only able to eat the rice because the red beans tasted burned but otherwise were nearly flavorless. Usually stewed beans are a house specialty. Not here! She could not catch the eye of any of the three young people talking behind the bar, so our other friend got up and called attention to the problem. Eventually, and without any apology, she got a different, substitute dinner that was edible. By that time however, everyone was almost finished so she just packed it up to go. One guest in our party asked after dinner for a cup of coffee. He was told they don't offer it. Really? We got up to leave. The other 3 patrons had already all gone by then at 8:45 PM. On her way to the bathroom our friend barely missed falling onto the slick floor where someone had recently passed with a very wet mop. We left and were pulling away from our parking spot when we realized the staff had quickly turned off all the lights in the place. Gosh, that was fast! Much faster than their service had been. Oh well, so much for that place. Lights out alright. We will never be back. read more
