Charming family ran restaurant. The food was delicious and the staff was awesome. We were visiting from California and will definitely be back!

I'm working in Ponce this week and was happy to find Yelp Alice and well In Puerto Rico. I searched for the highest rated place close to my hotel and when I got there it was closed. I went to my #2 choice. No such luck!!! Closed as well. So the third times a charm and it certainly held true. The hole in The wall joint I found was a true gem. Everything was a chef creation and made fresh with local ingredients. I was happy to try the mofongo stuffed pork loin. It had a savory sweet sauce unlike anything I've ever had and the thin pork loin was jam packed with sweet mashed plantain. I tried the rice and beans as well and well they were good too, nothing to complain about.

The four stars is for their food which once we got it was wonderful. However, it did take 45 minutes for us to get served. So be warned, don't come here if you're in a hurry. We had been up at the castle and this was only ten minutes away. Your gps should take you right here. We didn't see the small parking lot in front -- which was full anyway --- so we parked along the one way side street and walked back to the restaurant. You have to ring a doorbell and then they buzz you inside. You sit where you wish. The menu is pretty extensive. If you order right, it's not too expensive. So check out the items around $10 if you're on a budget. We got our beverages fairly fast. My husband loves parcha (passion fruit) juice so had some of that. They have a full bar. I ordered their fried chicken chunks (chicarrones de pollo). It came with two sides. I ordered their amarillos (yellow sweet plantains) and white rice with habechuelas (red beans). The chicken was lightly fried and there were various unidentifiable chopped small parts with bones, but it was very very good. The portion of rice and beans was huge. The rice wasn't that hot in temperature but the beans were. The plantains were not as sweet as maduros but I liked them also. My husband ordered a beef stew with rice and beans. The very flavorful stew had chunks of tender beef, potatoes, and carrot in a thick sauce like stock. Once we had our food, we ate quickly and got our check as we were meeting family. Too bad, as we would have wanted to try their flan. It looked good in passing. So, come for the very good food, but plan to dine awhile -- even for a quick lunch.

Rice and beans, pork chops, grilled chicken

This was the best food I had in this area. Service was amazing. Ambiance was low key. We had the arañitas, surrullos and we had pork chops with rice and beans. Flavor was amazing, well done. Price was reasonable. Muchas gracias! Will always come back when in Ponce.

We weren't starving when we came in, so we only ordered a conch salad cocktail, octopus salad cocktail, and a side of rice and beans. All were good, though not mind blowing. Seafood was fresh and everything was seasoned well. I'd say, 3.5 to 4 stars on the food. Subtract a star for slow service: Service was friendly, but slow. The front door is locked, so you have to ring the bell to be buzzed in. That makes it even more odd that it took long to be seated. We were just buzzed in! You know we're here! After being buzzed in, we stood there for quite some time, looking at the all the empty seats, waiting to be seated or at least get a signal to seat ourselves. After being seated, we just sat there...waiting to receive menus. Food also took some time to arrive, but we weren't bothered by it. Getting someone's attention for the check was another lengthy wait. Now, we're a little bothered, but not too much, not until we received our check. Subtract two stars for mystery pricing: The menu listed the conch cocktail at $8 and the octopus at $7. That should be $15, right? We were charged $19 for both items. When we approached them about it, they said the menu prices were wrong. It's only four dollars, which isn't much, but if you didn't have the time or resources to update menu prices, the server should have at least told us the prices have increased while we were ordering. That would have made it all good! The surprise on the bill, no matter how small, just feels shady.

The History of El Bohio Restaurant

Finding El Bohio Restaurant was a small challenge since it's hidden between a gas station and a residential area. As soon as you arrive the trick is to push the buzzer to be let in. OK, now that the location is figured out, let's talk about the food. The homemade sangria was so delightful. It wasn't strong but if I had a second glass, I would have been very chill. You could taste the fruit purée that you don't get from store bought sangria. If I hadn't taken the last bit, I would have certainly raised my glass for more. We ordered an appetizer plate which is the closest to homemade tapas that we have found so far in Ponce. As for our main entrees, the churrasco and sea bass are always a great choice, but if you are going for the local Ponce favorites, ask for beef stew, cod fish stew. Overall the experience was great, the closest to home cooked as it comes. And if you're worried about the prep time as others have complained, we had a party of six and several dishes, side dishes and drinks. Our wait was on par with what would be expected, don't worry about those claims of 45 minute waits.

I really enjoyed the dark atmosphere and spacious seating. Our server was also very kind, asking about our trip to Puerto Rico and giving us recommendations. We ordered four appetizers because we weren't in the mood for the entrees on the menu and it was a great strategy. We ordered the Aranitas De Salmon Sashimi, Tuna Tartar Taquitos, Croquetas De Risotto, and Escargots Cubierto De Filo. My personal ranking from favorite to least favorite was the sashimi, croquettes, tuna taquito, and escargot pastry. The sashimi paired really well with the light, airy, and crunchy plantains and the mango really elicits the freshness of the dish. The Croquettes were crunchy on the outside and cheesy and sweet in the inside, and the entirity was creamy and melted in my mouth. The tuna taquito was also sweet - the tuna tasted really fresh but the sauce kind of reminded me of teriyaki or honey barbeque which I don't mind. The pastry to me tasted on the plain side but the escargot was very buttery and flavorful. We also tried the Creme Brulee De Pistachio. It was a small size which is fine after we were full from the appetizers. It was really cream, sweet, crunchy, and the pistachio flavor punched through. Overall, I really recommend this restaurant.
