I remember way back when when the village of Rancho Bernardo did not exist at all, and was simply open and barren land off the 15 Freeway. You now exit Rancho Bernardo Road and proceed eastward to about the second or third light. At that intersection, you make a left turn. Thereafter, you travel along a quiet and residential street of pretty houses all the way to the end of the street, which ends in a cul de sac at the gated entrance to the Rancho Bernardo Inn. I love the architecture of the Rancho Bernardo Inn. It is very 1970's interpretation of Spanish baronial hacienda, and it works and seems fresh and modern, depite being over 50 years old. The lobby extends into a long and covered loggia that takes one into th garden of the hotel. The place to eat at the hotel is Avant.

Yes, I know... I'm a little late with this, but it gives everyone a head start for next year. If you've been, you know but if you haven't been, then you need to see this for yourself. The RBI is keeping Christmas spirit alive and well. It's always decked with Holiday Cheer, something fun for the adults and more for the Littles. Specialty bar and food items available at the restaurants. Always a treat. One of the most festive spots in Southern California during the holidays. Simply amazing and oh by the way, it's the RBI. So the service is always spectacular. You must see it for yourself. Thank you RBI for staying consistent.

Update: This morning, my husband called to try to make a tennis reservation, and fortunately they were able to fit him in at noon, even though it is Martin Luther King Jr. weekend. The receptionist did note that they typically prefer more than 24 hours' notice, which is important to keep in mind, especially if you're only staying one or two nights or checking in later in the day. Regarding the spa, after expressing how much we wanted a day pass, we were told the spa would call us in the morning as soon as they opened if any passes became available. Unfortunately, we never received that call, so we followed up ourselves. At that point, we were told they couldn't take any payments because their system was down. I suggested charging it to the room, and after some back-and-forth, they said they could--but only at the holiday rate of $140 per person when the hotel receptionist had previously told us the rate would be $69 per person and never mentioned holiday pricing. After the hotel intervened and acknowledged the pricing discrepancy, they honored the $69 rate. In the end, we were able to access both the tennis courts and the spa, but only after a significant amount of back-and-forth and clarification. It was far from straightforward and did not match how seamlessly these amenities are marketed. If you are booking this property specifically for the spa or tennis, be prepared to reserve everything well in advance and know that these amenities are not directly managed by the hotel, which can lead to delays and confusion. Access is not guaranteed simply by staying here. I do want to specifically call out Chloe, who was instrumental in helping us secure both the tennis and spa reservations. Without her help, we likely would not have been accommodated at all. While we ultimately enjoyed the amenities, the process was frustrating and stressful, especially during a holiday weekend. Clearer communication and better coordination would go a long way in setting accurate expectations for guests. Despite the miscommunication and logistical confusion, the grounds and spa were beautiful and the food was delicious, which made for a relaxing getaway once we were accommodated.

I did a day pass through Resort Pass. It was a good experience. I was at the adult pool. Thank goodness there is an adult pool. I ordered the BLTA which was delicious. The fries were salted perfectly. The bread was buttery, the ranch was creamy. I'd order this again. I also got a lemonade which was standard. For the pool, you to have to call a number to get service. It takes about 20-30 mins for the delivery. So expect a drink to take a while to come to you. It's a nice option though could be nicer if a server walked by occasionally to check in. There's a few umbrellas but not that many. Good selection of menu items. Parking was ok. They have a lot. It was full so I ended up parking in the neighborhood which was a 5 min walk. I didn't necessarily mind this since I'm used to a parking in central San Diego which is always terrible lol.

Life size gingerbread village (December 2025)

Rancho Bernardo Inn is always a gem hidden within a residential neighborhood of Rancho Bernardo. I have stayed there several times before (rooms are clean, and beds are comfortable) and have eaten at Verandah Grill and Avant countless times over the years (both very good). It also has a nice spa which I have also visited many times (it is tucked away which requires a bit of walking down and up a slope; the spa is a bit dated but clean). Over the Christmas holidays, the hotel has an amazing life-size gingerbread house or village. That is a must see! The staff is always professional and accommodating, and the service is good. Parking can be challenging at times, which may require you to park on residential street or overflow parking at nearby clubhouse at times. There is valet available as well.

The cafe / souvenir shop was soooo nice and quiet in the afternoon.

Pricey but if you are going to make use of the facilities, appreciate the grounds and the lay out of this hotel then it is worth your money. We had a very spacious double queen bed looking out onto the golf course. It was quiet enough for us to sleep with the window open and benefit from the fresh air brought in by the light rain. Our room was super clean with a large bathroom. Front desk was responsive and the different type of food services around the resort hotel make it easy to navigate for families. There is a family pool and a secluded adult pool. There were two weddings and two conventions during our three days stay and it member felt overcrowded or that we were spoiling someone else's event. All staff were super busy yet pleasant and helpful.

Very nice and clean resort. My fiancé and I drove in from Irvine to stay here for a few nights. I used AMEX so that upgraded our room to a suite facing the golf course. The resort is very well kept and clean, the grounds are older but you can tell they do a good job with upkeep. My fiancé went to the spa and got a facial, she said it was a great experience. The breakfast was really good, everything is fresh from their Chefs Garden. The only complaint I have would be the self parking which they charge 40 dollars a night for and on the weekends it took 25 minutes to find a spot after 8pm because of the restaurant, golf and weddings. I called the front desk to inquire and the manager Benjamin was quick to comp the parking fee for the whole stay. Amazing customer service. Staff was nice and friendly. Would come back

We checked into the Rancho Bernardo Inn in California on January 30 for a three-night stay. The hotel was quite full with several events taking place, yet everything felt well managed and unhurried. From the moment we arrived, the valet staff took excellent care of us, and the front desk check-in process was seamless and welcoming. A bellman escorted us to our room with our luggage, gave us a brief introduction to the space, and made sure we were comfortable before leaving -- a thoughtful touch that set the tone for our stay. That evening, we used our $100 dining credit for dinner, which was absolutely delicious. The atmosphere was stunning, with a guitarist softly strumming near the fireplace, creating a warm and elegant ambiance. It's truly one of the most beautiful places to dine, and it's also where breakfast is served in the morning -- something we really enjoyed. Overall, the service, setting, and experience exceeded our expectations. I would absolutely stay at Rancho Bernardo Inn again.

This is not just a resort, this is a whole village. There is a full sized golf course, a huge ballroom, multiple pools, a spa, and really attentive staff.

We booked a weekend away here and it was the most relaxing and amazing weekend ever. Everyone is amazing and the rooms are spectacular. The bar downstairs was fun with excellent service and staff and really felt like a getaway. The grounds are absolutely gorgeous and the adults only pool and spa were nothing short of bliss. The spa was so good, our old arses walked out feeling young again! :::laughs::: Worth every penny- we will definitely be back!

    Old world charm

Our daughter's wedding was in late February 2026. With a 5 month engagement, planning had to move quickly. JENNY RHYMES (Catering Sales & Services Manager) was wonderful to work with. She is friendly, knowledgeable, sweet, on time, and responds to emails and phone calls within 24 hours. Without Jenny the rehearsal and wedding would not have been so seamless. Everything about the wedding far exceeded our expectations. Ease of parking, signage, food, ambiance, guest rooms, and the overall feel was exactly what my daughter and her husband had dreamed of. RBI provides a unique setting, beautiful greenery and old world charm. The ceremony was on the North Lawn surrounded by rose bushes. The reception was like a fairytale on the Santiago Courtyard and the dancing was in the Santiago Ballroom. Big thank-you to the entire staff that helped in making our weekend perfect.

The Rancho Bernardo Inn is a wonderful and unique and beautiful establishment that will give you many opportunities to create special memories. The quiet atmosphere and serene area allows one's perspective to be directed to make discoveries of peace and harmony in a place where the rest of the world continues in its own chaos. The many waterfalls and well maintained and manicured gardens helps you to forget the drudgery of life that you're trying to escape from. The employees are generous with their hospitality and service is always amazing and delightful. There are many activities that are offered from Spa Services to Live Entertainment to Special Themed Soirées that the RB Inn is known for. Always check online for scheduled activities. For that special occasion or just to get away from the world, you will always make great memories when you choose the Rancho Bernardo Inn!!!

Stayed here for a comedy show nearby and what a lovely, relaxing, secluded retreat. I stayed with my boo thang & had a lovely time. The pool was so relaxing. And the drive from Los Angeles was just beautiful. Would love to come back for another mini staycation soon!

With that being said. The hotel looks much nicer in the photos than it does in person. The rooms themselves were good, they were clean and comfortable enough for our stay. We originally booked a regular 2 queen bedroom and were upgraded to a room with a kitchen and living room, which was a nice surprise and definitely appreciated. One thing we did enjoy was that there were places within walking distance, including a good pizza place and a gelato shop nearby. The biggest downside for us was the beach behind the hotel. When we walked down the beach, there were a lot of young people hanging around and random people camping there, which made the atmosphere less relaxing than expected. We are aware this is out of the hotel's control, but it did make the beach area feel less family friendly than we had hoped.

We liked that the double queen rooms came with spacious couches, microwaves, mini fridges and a kitchen island/bar to sit at. If your room faces the sunset, turn your AC on blast right away to keep it around 74 in your room or else it's going to get VERY toasty if you can't get the balcony slider open for fresh air. Walking around the property has a nice tropical feel. The landscapers do a nice job with all the trees and flowers. 4 star reasoning: We were told when we booked over the phone that we could get a pass for a second car when we arrived. When we arrived we were told we could not have a second car (we were absolutely willing to pay but it didn't matter and there were MANY open spots at 11pm). We planned our trip around the ability to have 2 cars. The hotel is unfortunately NOT gated so rather than staying overnight with my family, I drove home. I would NOT recommend parking across the street. The sliding door in our room in the 600 building was no longer functioning. And it could be heaved and forced open but it wasn't worth the effort or the noise it created.

This is a particular kind of review because I attended a Prom at the Catamaran on Friday evening…read more The party was from 7-10, and adults arrived a bit earlier than the Junior and Senior attendees. We had most of the upstairs space available for the kids including a large and airy ballroom, and adjacent rooms with spectacular views of the bay where we could sit outside on a balcony. There was food offered for the kids including veggie crudites, mini pizzas, chicken fingers and a huge array of desserts (churros, cookies, brownies, etc.) The space is large and inviting, and tropical in theme. Very on brand for San Diego and it feels like you are on vacation when you enter this space. Some of the decor seems dated and was giving "Golden Girls vibes", but because the location and everything else is solid, it does not really take away from the overall experience. The service, from the bartenders who were making mocktails for everyone to the servers who were keeping the food restocked and clearing away used dishes, was very attentive and present. They were cool, calm, and collected in the midst of kids doing very "kids" type things... hacky sack in the hallway anyone? There were several managers present throughout our Prom as well. They were attentive, and helpful. The kids seemed to have a great time, and so did the adults. The hotel itself is in a vibrant and very exciting location. You're on the bay, and across the street is the ocean. There are plenty of eateries and activities within walking distance, and this is the perfect location for a beachy stay or function. Due to these perks, this property is on the pricey side though, so keep that in mind. Mahalo!

By saying there's a "Champagne/Mimosa Bar" (attached picture from their website) it implies that there is a station where patrons can mix their own champagne & juices throughout the brunch. (Ever heard of a Bloody Mary bar? Same concept.) Don't be fooled in 2027... there was no mimosa bar. Only 1 complimentary glass of champagne or mimosa (with a choice of just 2 juices) provided by hard to find wait staff was included with the brunch. At the price we paid, you would think that bottomless mimosas would be included - at a minimum for the moms. We had to go to a cash bar for consistent self-service. 3 stars for the food - 1 star for the bait & switch. I don't know a single person who wouldn't expect an option for a bottomless mimosa at Mother's Day brunch.

Unfortunately, it ended up feeling more like a 2.5, maybe 3 star experience instead of the 4 stars it advertises. The room was disappointing from the start. The curtains were visibly dirty, there was no overhead lighting so the space felt dark, and the TV had pixel issues that caused a distracting strobe effect. The AC didn't work properly, which left the room hot and humid most of the night. For a resort property, basic comfort should not feel optional. One of the biggest letdowns for me was the s'mores listed on the website for 6:00pm. I went down at 6:05 and no one ever showed up. No staff, no explanation, nothing. It might seem small, but I planned part of my evening around it. If something changes, it should be communicated. I booked through Amex Travel and was told at check-in that they "don't do that anymore," which resulted in penalties on my end. That was frustrating because guests should not be responsible for outdated affiliations or website information. The resort fee inclusions felt underwhelming, and the in-room water bottles were $8 if opened. There was a joking comment that the other water was free, which didn't land. On top of that, there was a 6% surcharge added to the restaurant bill associated with the property. At that point, it would feel more transparent to simply adjust menu pricing. The view was beautiful and the sunset was stunning, but that credit goes to nature, not the resort. We did enjoy kayaking! For the price point and the reputation, I expected better attention to detail and follow through. The location has potential, but the overall experience did not match the marketing. UPDATING bc they charged me for the water bottle that I didn't even open!

I had the best time with a group of girlfriends for the holiday tea service at the Fairmont Grand…read moreDel Mar. The teas were absolutely delicious, the sweets and savories were beautifully made, and tasted just as good as they looked, and the atmosphere is fantastic. Luxury at its best! This is a five star hotel so you must expect to pay more than for other afternoon teas, but for me, the quality of the refreshments, the atmosphere and the wonderful service makes it worth it. When we paid the check, our server brought us all over a little gift of the creamy Earl Grey, which is their signature tea, for us to take home and enjoy. My only issue and it was not enough to remove a star... When I called and told the concierge I was coming for tea and asked what the parking situation was, I was told that it was $70 for valet parking. Then my friend called the next day because it just didn't seem right and they told her it was $25 for parking if you were having tea. But then when we left and brought our parking tickets to the valet stand, we were charged $12.50. I love paying less than I was expecting to, but it just kind of seemed very discombobulated on their end and I don't expect that from a hotel of their caliber.

This was our experience last year and am writing this as our anniversary approaches and am reminded…read moreof how disappointing our experience was. My husband and I were so excited to spend our anniversary here just be let down. I've worked in a Forbes 5-star resort so expected a really wonderful experience. I realized (only afterwards) they were demoted that year, and I can absolutely see why. I'm surprised they were able to keep any. Despite the fact that we were celebrating our anniversary, they did nothing to acknowledge it or make it special for us. I've been to resorts all over the world and have had better service even at places with no designation while not celebrating any occasion. When we made the reservation, they even failed to tell us that the spa was actually under construction during our planned stay. Since we made the hotel reservation in advance, they said we can make a reservation for the spa closer to the date with no mention that if we did, we'd have to be taken off property close by. We didn't end up doing it cause we wanted to spend time at the actual spa. One day, we just heard loud noises in our room from construction while we were trying to rest. Also, if you look really young, it appears they treat you like you're in the wrong place. I guess they assume if you're young (or don't dress in designer clothing?) you have no wealth. I've never felt so out of place and we were very cordial and respectful to everyone. We were thinking of going out of state but a friend of mine told us how amazing it was so we decided on a staycation instead. It turned out to be a waste of time and we wished we just traveled elsewhere like we originally planned. At the end of our stay, we were looking at each other saying, what in the world was that? We didn't feel rested or rejuvenated, what a horrible experience. The only upside was how beautiful the property was and the F&B team. The property is so well-maintained and the ornate details all over the resort are exquisite. I will give them that. Our server was also great--both at the restaurant and in room dining. The concierge also gave us chocolates when she found out it was our anniversary which was a nice gesture, but isn't that something planned for ahead of time? Even the person at the stables wasn't very friendly (again, maybe cause we look young?), but was friendly to the older folks. And we also enjoyed our meals. The key to Forbes is training and it appears it isn't a priority here. It's hard to believe they have any Forbes designation at all. I'm not here to trash the hotel but hope this feedback is taken into consideration so they can address where they can make improvements.
