Our quotes significantly increased the actual purchase price for pavers and wall products. So we decided to purchase paver material ourselves directly from Ewing and save the "up-charge" from Fernando. He seemed to be surprised that we didn't want to pay him the increased cost for materials (a couple thousand $$). And we surely didn't expect Fernando would verbally tell us " we can afford it (meaning extra material costs) since we sold a house in California" which didn't go over too well with me. Easy to order and $200 delivery charge from Ewings. The second wave/project of pavers (sidewalk and garbage can area) and walls (along back wall), fill and soil for small grass areas for our Lennar track home small backyard were discussed in person. We gave it a break in time due to vacation plans and needing to regroup on final phase. We were reluctant to reach out for the final phase of work given past "uncomfortable interactions, but decided to anyway since we anticipated about 3-4 days left and Fernando was familiar with what was needed and continuity of paver installation. As before, we itemized the scope of work to be included on the invoice. Along with repair of poly sand on previous project, moving irrigation drain and one sprinkler and adding fill and top soil to small grass sections and 6 ft of additional pack material under south sidewalk pavers. After not hearing from Fernando, we followed up. His wife Gloria sent us a brief email declining the work, no reason provided or further discussion/negotiation requested or offered. I had planned to write a review after the yard was completely finished, along with beautiful pictures to showcase Fernando's work, but unfortunately and to our disappointment, this is written sooner than planned and only includes paver edge sand degrading. We can only assume the final work order was declined because we were not willing to agree to the up charges of wall materials as the installation costs at $10/ sq ft were the same as prior patio project that was actually a bit more complicated due to measurements and rounded areas/cutting pavers, vs straight sidewalk and area for garbage cans. There was no call from Fernando to discuss or negotiate further. All so impersonal especially after trying our best to "work with" Fernando prior month. I don't mind paying a fair price for installation labor, and materials but do not expect to pay almost double for hardscape costs. Up charging for delivery of materials is acceptable since he offered to pick up at Ewings. To me, not passing thru actual material cost and perhaps any potential "contractor discount" is not a good look for a business practice. It's very easy to obtain the cost of a pallet from any supplier and compare to a materials quote. Nobody likes the feeling of being "taken advantage of" because "we can afford to pay". If you decide to use Fernando, do your homework and price the material costs of pavers and walls. The pavers Fernando and his workers installed about a month ago have lost the poly sand filler on ALL the edges. He said it needed to "be taped", but apparently that was not done initially and now we will need to repair it. He did not offer to fix this as part of the project we paid for, so we included it in the subsequent invoice that was declined. All other new yard work Fernando and his team did for us with installing irrigation pipes and sprinklers, DG on side yards and main patio area was great (except poly sand wearing away) and at price we agreed upon. We provided itemization of specific work on the invoices, otherwise they were "way too general". He or one of his workers made a decision of sprinkler valve placement in a different location than what was discussed. That issue was corrected after it was noticed. Supervision was needed. Fernando's business acumen has a bit to be desired and his attitude to being customer friendly waxed and waned, which was difficult and uncomfortable to deal with at times.

I work with contractors for a living and I have never met anyone who works as hard as Fernando. He took a backyard that was nothing but dirt and turned it into my own personal paradise. I contacted Garden Design through Yelp and received a response the same day. Fernando accommodated my schedule to meet with me since my time was limited here prior to the close on my home. He provided photos of some of his work and even took me to see some of his completed projects. I was impressed with everything I saw. Getting my backyard completed was a priority for me since I have dogs. I closed on my house on a Friday and Fernando came on Saturday to finalize the scope of the work. He started the project that Monday and was finished within two weeks. Not only is Fernando the hardest working guy I've met, he is very nice, friendly and a pleasant person to work with. You certainly can not go wrong with hiring Garden Design and Lawn for you landscape and hardscape projects.
