Moving to Canberra from Hawaii -- and having traveled through Asia a bit -- I've come to love -- and expect a lot from -- ramen restaurants. To my excitement and relief, Ramen O Woden passes the test!
Ramen O is in a great location within central Woden, just across from another great spot -- The Alby.
I arrived to order takeaway a few minutes before their evening opening time, 5:30, to find myself at the back of a line of 10 people already waiting! Quite surprising. The small restaurant probably seats 20-30 people, carefully Tetris'd in the space, but still manages to feel light and airy with clean white walls and light-toned wood finishes throughout. If that's not your thing, they also offer takeaway.
The ordering process was easy, and after a short wait, three bowls of ramen, an order of gyoza, and three mochi desserts were soon served and heading home with me.
I do not live far from this restaurant, but given that the food I order for takeaway from the cafe in my suburb is often cold by the time I walk home with it, I was shocked that our ramen was still piping hot when we got home.
Ramen O's specialty is tonkatsu-style, which if I recall correctly is a soy and pork base, which I think makes for a nice creamy soup, and Ramen O's take on it is delicious. Not too salty, which is great, and a good amount of all the standard ramen ingredients to make for a filling meal. The gyoza was okay, not great, but not bad.
One failing, if you can call it that, is they don't serve the perfect pairing from Ramen -- delicious Japanese lager. No alcohol at all! It's okay to be dry, but few things in this world are as tasty as salty ramen paired with delicious Japanese beer.
I expect this to make a regular appearance in our Friday night meal out lineup! read more
