As far as I know, Turnertoys is the only truly full line toy store in Vermont. They have a full range of selections from the mass-market popular toys (Legos, Playmobil, Thomas trains) to the latest ingenious specialty toys, brainteasers, and board games. They even have a fairly full line of old-fashion hobby supply, including model kits (including the original Guillow balsa airplane models), balsa wood, tools, glue, CO2 rockets, too much to mention. The store is large enough to allow a neat, orderly layout, so it is easy to see what they have. It really helps that Peter, the owner, and his staff are experts on everything they sell, and can answer questions intelligently. There is even room for a large activities room, where the store hosts play events for kids every week. The kids can try new toys, improve their art skills, and just have group fun. It reminds me of a miniature FAO Schwarz, staffed by the owner and his friends and family. Definitely worth a trip to Essex.

I typically make online purchases, but with ONCE UPON A TIME TOYS, how could I avoid it? I love the store name, and it was right there in front of me in quaint, charming Stowe, VT, so I went in. There were a great many unique toys, games and children's gift ideas at this store, but it was overwhelming to me. The sales associate was very friendly, so I asked her what she'd recommend for a 1 year old girl and something "Spiderman" for my 4 year old grandson. She immediately presented me with a cloth doll, and a little boat with Spiderman in it that when wound up in water (like in a bathtub), it would zoom across the water. I took them both !! My granddaughter was interested for a few minutes and moved on to something else because she's only 1. I'm quite certain the little doll will have greater appeal to her as she gets older. My grandson was soooooooo taken with his Spiderman boat that he broke it before getting to test it out in the actual water. He's 4, and listening to directions is not part of his skill set yet, lol. She was purchased 18 months ago, her BLUE her eyes have turned purple. I called the shop and spoke to Jessica. Explained my situation and concerns. While doing so I could hear the owner screaming overtop of her about color is perception. I said ok, let me send you some photos next to Mary. We have the ENTIRE collection, purchased directly from them. This was my response via email. "I showed these pictures to the owner of the company. She is aware that there are customers who think the eyes look purple. The company did a lot of research regarding color perception and found that some people are seeing blue, and some see purple. It's all a matter of personal perception." So I called back and stated that this was unacceptable. And the owner again was screaming over poor Jessica. This will be our last purchase @thequeenstreasures.
