Unfortunately, one of the staff members -- a heavier-set guy with glasses -- came across as rude and dismissive toward me, which made the experience uncomfortable. As a beginner, first impressions matter a lot, and instead of feeling welcomed I felt talked down to. The head coach himself seemed respectful, which is why I'm leaving this review honestly instead of just writing the whole gym off. I just think new people should be treated with more patience and respect, especially when they're stepping out of their comfort zone to try something new.

It wasn't until coming across Coach Gabe, Coach Ant, Coach Rey and Coach Mya at Rooted Legacy that made me feel comfortable taking on a new skill later in life. Both have decades of experience and still keep their skills sharp by competing. The gym has only been open a year and in that time there have been growing pains but they continue to learn and make the training challenging, educational and fun.

The class started with a warm up which is very good at reducing injuries. The movements and strikes were explained in detail and then demonstrated. Students were carefully observed and given feedback on how they were performing. Praise if doing well and helpful critique if they needed improvement. There was an positive atmosphere in the class and everyone worked together as a team. I immediately signed up after observing the class. They do not lock you into a long term contract. You can go month to month if you'd like. That was refreshing. Their rates are very reasonable for the quality of instruction you are receiving. I went to my first class the next day and received excellent instruction on striking and defense. It was a very good workout as well as teaching self defense and the art of Muay Thai. I will be a student here for a long time. F.Y.I. - they also offer a cardio kickboxing class that'll get you in shape quickly. Give them a try, I highly recommend it.

Felt a bit misguided because of course signup process was as easy as 123, but in order to cancel my membership (which I had to do for personal reasons) I had to write a letter, get it NOTARIZED (yes seriously) , and drop off in person, AND $100 cancellation fee lol. Guess there's a catch to finding the most affordable muy Thai in the Bay Area. In all honesty it did feel like communication was solid up until I started inquiring about cancelling. As soon as I started inquiring bout cancelling it felt like I could not receive a response. Had to message repeatedly, and felt like my calls were being dodged intentionally. I would call from my phone and calls went to voicemail repeatedly. Tried using my friends phone to call and they answered on first call lol. Just didn't feel very professional or helpful. Finally got my membership cancelled though after much effort and communication. All in all, this is a great place for muy Thai, and the coaches have extensive knowledge of what they're doing and create a welcome environment for new students. Like my review states, My critiques lie solely with the dated, frustrating, tedious cancellation policy. Come for the good vibes and solid training, and stay because you probably won't have a choice, bc you won't be able to cancel LOL.

But Coach Alex is simply fantastic with kids and instructing them in the most positive way. I was a little concerned about the potential injuries and chokeholds in BJj, but the coaches are so good at watching the kids closely and making sure kids stay safe. There are several assistant coaches that vary depending on be day, and all are excellent and promote learning, safety and positivity. The dojo is spacious and clean. I honestly can't say enough good things. There are classes for the whole age range of kids and adults. I never thought my girls would do BJJ and I have to say, it's been a great experience--my kids used to get nervous going, bc again, physically grappling with another kid was an alien concept to them, but now they are pretty comfortable and I can see how empowered they feel after each class. Their stamina and physical fitness are much improved--they used to complain about PE in school but now, they have no problems running the laps, doing pushups, etc. If you are a parent looking for a new activity for your kid that will help with not only their physical wellness but also really promote feeling confident and empowered, Warriors BJJ under Coach Alex is a fantastic option, great for both girls as well as boys!
