As Michael's wife, I have watched him deal with this hip pain for most of our 33 years of marriage…read more I've seen how much it affected the way he walked, what he could do, and just his everyday life. More than anything, I wanted him to finally have a real chance to get out of pain. Traveling from California to Maryland for surgery was a big decision. Michael has been an attorney in San Diego for decades and knows many of the top surgeons here, so going across the country was not something we took lightly. The doctors we saw here were talking about a much bigger open surgery. My husband, being my husband, had an enormous list of questions. A lot of the answers were already available in the information Dr. Christoforetti had put together, and his physician's assistant, Brian, answered many of the others. When we met with Dr. Christoforetti, he carefully went through everything with us and never made us feel rushed, even with Michael's never-ending list. One of the things that made me feel much better was understanding that doing the surgery through small openings did not mean he could see less. With the camera, he could actually get a very detailed view of what was going on and repair what he found without putting Michael through the much larger open surgery that had been discussed. Over the years, Michael tried just about every type of treatment available -- injections, physical therapy, and other non-surgical treatments -- without lasting relief. It meant so much to me that Dr. Christoforetti was finally trying to fix the actual problem instead of just treating the pain again. As a wife, there is a different kind of trust involved. Michael had to trust the surgeon operating on him. I had to trust the person I was handing my husband over to. Dr. Christoforetti made that easy. I felt that he truly cared about Michael and treated him the way you would want someone to treat a member of your own family. His whole team was wonderful to us. Being so far from home made both of us nervous, and having a direct number to Brian, his physician's assistant, gave us a lot of comfort. Dr. Christoforetti, if you ever make it to California, there will always be a place for you at our table. You took such wonderful care of my husband, and I would love the chance to return the kindness by making you the best home-cooked Persian meal of your life.

For the past two visits, both appointments have been nearly all on-time, which I appreciate. The facility also has an in-house X-ray technician and machine, which cuts down on time. I can't emphasize on how much I really appreciate the aspect of how efficient the entire team there works. As strange as it may sound, I couldn't help but to feel like I am guilty of wasting everyone's time there, and I felt rushed and flushed out of there quickly. Yes, I love physicians who are on time and the office so efficient that I waltz out of there happy and ready to get on with the rest of my day. Maybe it's just me who felt bad about the reasons and cause of issues I have presented and I felt like there's really nothing anyone can do about it. Maybe I should just call it disappointment. I'm not sure. Whatever the case is, I will just go back to my regular orthopedic office I've come accustomed to.

After more than 20 years of hip pain, especially on the right side, the pain finally became bad…read moreenough that surgery had to be seriously considered. Over the years, extensive long-term physical therapy and multiple cortisone and PRP injections were tried without lasting success. At one point, an expensive placental-tissue injection was proposed. It sounded appealing, but after looking carefully at the research, I could not find convincing evidence that it would repair a significant structural tendon tear. I am an attorney and spent part of my career representing physicians, hospitals and pharmaceutical companies. That certainly does not make me a doctor, but it does make me careful about medical claims and major medical decisions. Several excellent orthopedic surgeons were consulted. One was Dr. Michael Muldoon in San Diego, a superb and highly experienced hip arthroscopic surgeon. He is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, trained at the Mayo Clinic and previously directed the Hip and Knee Service at Naval Medical Center San Diego. What impressed me tremendously was his honesty. Dr. Muldoon explained that, although he had extensive hip arthroscopy experience, he had not done enough of this particular gluteus medius repair endoscopically to recommend doing mine that way. He could perform an open repair, but highly recommended Dr. John Christoforetti for the endoscopic approach. That distinction mattered a great deal to me. An open repair generally means a larger incision and more disruption of the tissue around the hip. An endoscopic repair uses small portals and specialized instruments, with much less soft-tissue disruption and potentially fewer wound-related complications. For this type of surgery, I wanted someone who had performed a great many of these repairs through the less-invasive approach. After extensive research, I could not find anyone who remotely matched Dr. John Christoforetti's combination of experience, qualifications and focus on this type of surgery. Dr. John Christoforetti is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, graduated from Georgetown University School of Medicine, has performed thousands of arthroscopic procedures and served as President of ISHA--The Hip Preservation Society. He also teaches advanced hip arthroscopy techniques, including knotless labral repair. There is an old saying: if all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Medicine is no different. Even excellent surgeons naturally tend toward procedures they know best. Patients should take their time, get several opinions and ask how many of their exact procedure a surgeon has actually performed. Once surgery is done, there is no rewind button. That is why I flew from San Diego to Maryland specifically to have Dr. John Christoforetti perform my surgery. My operation included an endoscopic gluteus medius tendon repair, removal of the inflamed trochanteric bursa and endoscopic treatment of the damaged portion of the labrum. The surgery was performed at Watkins Mill Surgery Center, a new physician-owned orthopedic center with specialized equipment for procedures such as hip endooscopy. The facility was impressive, but the personal care was even more impressive. Brian Long, PA-C, gave me his direct phone number and was available by call or text. Knowing I could reach someone who actually knew my case was incredibly reassuring. The entire experience felt truly one-on-one rather than like being passed through a large medical system. It is far too early to judge the final surgical result. Recovery from this repair is lengthy, and my walking and activities are currently very restricted while the tendon heals. So far, however, I have not needed pain medication since surgery. The experience with Dr. John Christoforetti, Brian Long, PA-C, and their team has been the best doctor-patient experience of my life. Traveling across the country for this surgery was absolutely worth it!

Then Dr Schluntz came in with my images and was angry that the images of my neck was useless, so he barked at me to get ones of my shoulder. I said, I tried to explain that to radiology. So, he sent me back down the hall. He was really agitated by it. That was the first crappy thing that happened. But then, he wanted to give me a cortisone shot in my arm and I said, "I want to talk about it first." He came at me with the needle; I was boxed in between a wall to my left and a wall in front of me. He responded, "Let's talk about it later", and SHOVED THE NEEDLE IN MY ARM!!!! I WAS ASTOUNDED. TALK ABOUT MALPRACTICE. I had a very good reason to discuss getting cortisone because of a previous reaction I had when I'd been put on prednisone several years before, and it just about crippled me; I couldn't lift my arms over my head, I couldn't drive or shampoo my hair. It was miserable. Like I said, I was flabbergasted. I was so much in shock by it, that I said nothing. When I went back, I explained to Dr Schluntz that what he did was unacceptable and negligent and that I was very displeased. He didn't acknowledge me at all. Not a single syllable came out of his mouth. He acted as if I had said nothing. Needless to say, he is arrogant and irresponsible. What a jerk.

I had to ask for someone to return to the room and walk me through what I should be doing--and they seemed genuinely annoyed that I asked. I think this because I saw Liz after seeing a doctor about my shoulder injury, and when the doctor said everything looked good (it didn't feel that way at all), Liz was able to diagnose the actual cause of my shoulder pain, and through manual treatment, help fix the issue. I really liked the fact that you do not need to sign a contract with Precision and although they offer monthly memberships, you can also buy class cards, which is good for me since I am not an extremely structured exerciser. Also, they offer both fitness classes, equipment, and physical therapy, which appealed to me since I've had multiple injuries the past few years that have been affecting my activity level. Precision is in one of the office parks in the Rockledge area and is nothing fancy in terms of its looks and doesn't fall into the category of a "bargain gym," but the classes I've been to (spin, yoga, and pilates reformer) are FABULOUS and are worth every penny! They are challenging, and the instructors really pay attention to what you are doing and make an effort to introduce themselves to new people in their classes, learn your name, and help you adjust as needed to really perform the exercises correctly. They are also great about asking if you have any injuries that limit some of your movements and help you modify as needed. Besides the great classes, the people who attend the classes are much friendlier than in any gym I've belonged to EVER, which is pretty refreshing. The only down side is they do not offer too much in the evenings in terms of classes...so I am trying my best to become a morning exerciser. It's probably better for me anyways to get it out of the way first thing in the day :)
