Today two gentlemen came out to remove my holiday lights on my very large tree. This was the 11th year that they decorated my super large tree. They've been taking care of our trees and shrubs for a few years. They do decent work but are very expensive.

I have had a major and minor tree work done by Rainbow. First, the arborist has been very good to work with over the past 15 years as we nurtured a big elm in our backyard. We treated it, trimmed it significantly and a month ago, we lost it to Dutch elm disease. The removal was a huge undertaking and involved evacuation of our house and neighbors, power shut off and street closure for the crane and other equipment. The crew was prompt, skilled, friendly and very cognizant of our loss and the impact to our yards. The cost was significant but I knew that from the start. Given the complexity of the cutting, I would not have trusted anyone else. The crew answered all of our questions and cleaned up our yard and roof very well. We miss our tree. read more

Rainbow Tree Care treated our ash trees for emerald ash borer disease. They did so with a disclaimer of 1-2 years life expectancy and no warranty. The trees did not even make it 1 year. My issue is they shouldn't treat trees that do not have a chance of survival. They are supposed to be the experts and provide you with expert input. In our case, it is a waste of money to treat trees that are beyond the point of no return. Lesson learned, do not spend money on a service that has no warranty. read more

I had Rainbow remove one tree ($1,240) and grind the stump ($200). They get 2 stars b/c the tree and stump are gone. They get only 2 stars b/c of the damage caused when removing the tree. First, large divots were created in the grass from dropping the limbs/trunk as it was removed. This was expected. However, they failed to (or even attempt to) repair the divots. Second, damage was caused to my driveway by their equipment (I assume by the bucket truck, even though they used boards under the truck's stabilizing feet to disperse its weight). I contacted Rainbow regarding the damage to the driveway. An employee promptly responded and met me to assess the damage. He apologized for the damage and essentially dismissed it as something that can happen when work is done on/near a driveway. That was it. Rainbow did not offer to reduce the bill to compensate for the damage they caused. (See photos of damage - titled "Damage caused to driveway during tree removal") I've gotten an estimate to repair the driveway; it'll be around $250... Overall, it was a bad experience and I certainly won't consider Rainbow in the future. read more

They were awesome. Our arborist, Sarah Burgess, is super knowledgable, patient and understanding. She gave us lots of insights about our (very small) forest area, and the Minnetonka area in general as it relates to trees. She gave us the knowledge and confidence to think about trees long term. We also had a budget to work within and she helped us figure out the best approach. The team that came to do the work was polite, happy to explain their approach, and left the yard better than they found it. We had a tree infected with EAB that had to be removed this spring. We collected several quotes and ended up with two very similar in price. We selected Rainbow because of the detail they included in their estimate; they explained the process throughly and laid out how they would work with Xcel, the city, and our neighbors to ensure a smooth process. I also appreciated that the quote included the tax amount, where some quotes did not. The removal went smoothly and they were able to do it sooner than expected. Ahh, the joys of homeownership...my commitment to the balance of nature and respect for the ecosystem has been sorely tested by a beaver that gave us the bird a couple years ago. So this beaver...lops down two of the four of the shade trees we have just outside our fence and bordering a pond (in a natural reserve, mind you, so we couldn't just shoot the MFer). Thinks about taking out a third, but decides instead to just shave it 360 degrees and let it die a slow death right in front of our eyes. *Thankfully* the one it left was upwards of 30 feet tall - asshole. So here we sit with two massive logs, two stumps and one sky-high stick in the mud. Referred to Rainbow Treecare from a friend and spoke to them about our dilemma. They came out for free and were very thorough in their assessment of the situation. ("Oh, you say if I would have called you in the winter when the pond was frozen over, it would have been cheaper because you could have just dropped the tree on the ice? Awesome! Anyone ever tell you that you'd make a GREAT personal trainer?") I agree with Joanna that their pricing was a bit higher than I expected, but I have no estimate for comparison. My hunch is simply based on the fact that...well, you guys cut down trees...it's what you do. Does it really cost you $300 in skill for that? But much like a plumber, you're paying for the increase in YOUR convenience, not the decrease in theirs. They did a top notch job with stump removal, tree removal and cleaning up a chitty-looking half-dead willow that is our sole remaining source of shade. (Effing beavers.) They were VERY prompt and got the job done in one morning by sending multiple guys out, which I greatly appreciate. Their service was superb, but my recommendation: buy a house with no trees. read more

Three or four years ago I had Rainbow Treecare out to prune 3 trees in my backyard. They sent 3 guys and spent at least 2-3 hours trimming and pruning a significant amount of limbs from my ash and maple trees. One technician actually climbed into the maple tree and cleared out multiple branches within that tree. I paid perhaps $350 at that time and I could really notice a difference. I had one of their arborists out to give me an estimate this year and he advised the trees needed pruning again. I assumed significantly so, like the last time. They sent 3 guys who were here maybe 20 minutes. I looked out front and they left a very small pile of cut limbs on my front yard which they picked up later. I feel completely ripped off this year as I still paid ~$312.00 for this minimal work which I could have done myself. Lesson learned. Next time I will ask how much is needed and make the assessment as to whether I could just do it myself. read more

After contracting with Rainbow Treecare in the summer of 2012 to do a tree removal of a dead tree (the winter of 11/12 was brutal on trees), the company's crew arrived in late August to take out the dead tree. They proceeded to remove the WRONG tree - a nice, 75+ year old spruce planted back in the 1940s! While they did also take down the correct, fully-marked tree, we did lose an important part of our front yard landscape. After many runarounds and delays in just making contact with the company and their insurance reps, they finally may a very low and insulting offer. I had to take them to court and file a case of gross negligence to recover the significant value of the lost tree. I can not recommend Rainbow Treecare for any services. read more

If I could give this company a 0-star rating, I would. My neighbor gave me their contact information, as they were having an identical tree removed. Our neighbors tree that is getting removed is less than 15' away from the one I needed removed. Rainbow emailed and said they were putting their Arborist TJ on to come out and give an estimate. After 3-days, I emailed and asked if this had been done, as I needed to get the process going as our neighbors were having theirs removed the next week. I got an email back that "TJ" had done the estimate and would have it to me that day or the next. 3-days later, I still hadn't received a drop off, call, or emailed estimate. I once again emailed and asked that someone please give me the estimate as soon as possible. That morning, I received an email stating that they were so sorry and would reach out to "TJ" and request he contact me that day. Well it's 3-days later and I still haven't heard from this phantom arborist "TJ". How much easier of a job could be placed in their lap. They are going to be cutting a tree down 15' away from the one I asked a quote for???? If you are looking for a professional estimate, I would highly suggest you seek one elsewhere if this is the type of business practice they allow. read more

part of the pride of home ownership is dealing with the crazy spendy trees that grow in your backyard and inoculating them against whatever it is that mother nature is inclined to inflict upon them. trees repay you with shade, crap on your deck leaves and coolness. they also provide a stage for belligerent squirrels. we have 2 elm trees in the back yard, they grow like mad, we love them but they require maintenance that is deceptively expensive. for this latest round of trimming, i used rainbow treecare. they actually did a really good job trimming the trees when they finally came out. it was just that getting them to come out required some additional hassle. the communication skills leave a lot to be desired. they actually had to come out 2x since the first time they didn't have the bucket truck that is required for trimming my backyard behemoths. one would think they'd make that explicitly clear for the crew going out there. this meant that we coordinated car moves and such with our neighbors for nought. to rainbow's credit, they recovered nicely and got back out the next week and coordinated with the neighbors to make sure that things ran smoothly. read more

Joe wasted my time by not telling on the initial call that they wont cut back trees on boundaries. Instead he arranged for Al to come out at 8am the day after I moved in. I was exhausted but got up for the ap. The first thing Al said was I wont trim back trees on fence lines. He talked and talked and talked about how he wouldn't do the job. I had to walk him to the door to get him to leave. Wasted my precious time. All that I needed to know on first contact is that they aren't comfortable doing the job. We used Rainbow to treat our ash tree when the threat of emerald ash borer first presented itself. They claimed we received a citywide special price due to our citywide discount. When they notified us it was again due I questioned the price increase. The man I talked to was very rude and suggested I go try another company if I wanted. I had them do it again before instead of checking prices. My neighbor had her tree, (same trunk size as mine), done by a competitor for 40.00 cheaper. We also used them for some trimming on a tree due to a fire next door. Again, the trimmer that came out was very rude and ignored me when I voiced concerns that the tree may look lopsided if just the fire damaged limbs were cut out. He then left when he was done without so much as a "I'm done". And of course the tree is lopsided. I called and cancelled any further service with them. read more

We've used Rainbow Treecare several times now. We've had 2 tree trimmings, 2 tree fungicide treatments, 2 shrub removals, as well as used them one summer to rejuvenate our lawn. They have been top notch all around. They always come out for free and inspect the work to be done and give estimates first. They will even come out when you are not at home and just call you with their recommendations. I even had a tech out once who went around my yard with me and gave me insight and tips on questions with my other shrubs that they didn't touch. I think their prices may be a bit higher than some other places, but they give you good service so it probably makes up for it. read more

The arborist who provided the estimate, Ben, really made sure I understood the work that was needed and provided details on what he recommended be done. Rainbow removed a tree and ground the stump for me. The service and personnel were very professional and efficient. Cleanup was excellent, especially for the grinding (Thank you, Reggie!). In the fall of 2018 I contacted Rainbow Tree care to trim 2 trees and remove an aged Arbor Vitae. The Arbor Vitae was removed without problems. The tree trimming was an extreme disappointment. The trees were unbalanced and poorly thinned to promote shapely growth. It took some complaining for them to correct deficient work. I was told that the stump of the Arbor Vitae needed to be ground out. Rainbow tree marked my file "DO NOT SERVICE". This was done to cover the first attempt at trimming (making it appear that excessive demands were involved). I am a disabled Veteran and could not spend time watching them. A friend and my neighbors watched. There was a universal opinion that the work was sub-standard. I paid $1800 for poor service and an insult. The insulting "Do Not Service" was free. On Saturday, April 25th, 2015 I noticed a Rainbow worker in my neighbors' yard. Since my neighbors and I had recently had tree trimming work done, I was wondering what this was about. I was disturbed to learn that the worker was going to spray my neighbors' apple tree, a good third of which hangs over my organic garden, and that I had not been informed. The work was cancelled for that day, and my neighbors and I worked out an agreement that Rainbow would only spray on their side of the fence and they would cover my garden with tarps. On Thursday, April 30th, Brent and a young woman from Rainbow arrived, as scheduled, to complete the job as planned. I was fully prepared to go ahead with the plan we had made. Brent, however, the one apparently in charge, decided it was too windy to proceed, and he cancelled the work. Subsequently, my neighbors stopped speaking to me, and then refused to allow scaffolding on their property for the tuckpointing of my chimney. When I tried to speak with them they refused or exploded in anger. Finally, they emailed me, explaining that I had broken a trust that had been built up for many years (they moved in 10-15 years ago), that I had broken a promise, and that Rainbow would no longer work with them. I couldn't understand what they meant. I contacted Scot Henke of Rainbow, to see if something could be done for my neighbors and to inquire why they might have felt I'd broken a promise. From Scot I learned that while Brent had told me he was canceling the work because of the wind, he told Scot that I had objected to their proceeding, (which was not true) which, in turn, Scot relayed to my neighbors. I also learned there is a chemical trespass law, which was news to me, and a company can get in trouble if the spray travels to another property. He said it's hard for them to ever do spraying in Minneapolis, for this reason. I have requested that Brent write a letter/email to my neighbors explaining that he had given different information to me and to Scot Henke, i.e. that I had not broken a promise, but had been ready to go ahead, without objection, and it was Brent who cancelled the work. I have also asked that Rainbow verify that the neighbors have been informed about the spraying, before they proceed with any job. Apparently they simply assume that the customer has informed the neighbors, which is clearly inadequate. Rainbow has refused to write the letter explaining the situation. They have refused to tell the truth and take responsibility for the serious problem they created for me with my neighbor. I expected integrity from Rainbow, but it didn't happen. read more

After the storm that went through recently we had Rainbow come out and take care of some dangling branches. They gave us an estimate, suggested we do something more comprehensive but weren't pushy about it, they arrived when stated, were very concerned that the curious grandkids who wanted to watch were safely far away and the clean-up was great. We were told that we would hear back about scheduling in a week or two, but we never heard back. Emails asking about status went unanswered. But another week has gone by, it's now been nearly two months since we accepted their bid, and we still have not heard back. "Our" arborist, Leben McCormick, is responsive, knowledgeable and an all-around nice guy. For years they treated our 100+ year old elm tree with TLC. When it finally had to come down, the removal was very professional. Leben is always available to answer questions and give advice as well as to line up Rainbow's competent crews when they are needed. I highly recommend the company. I've been dealing with Rainbow Treecare for over 20 years, and I find them very dependable. Specifically, they have inoculated our elm trees against the Dutch Elm Disease, and an ash tree we have against the Emerald Ash Borer. They have responded promptly when I've called, and set up appointments and kept them in a timely way. Their arborists have come when asked and given us very helpful advice on a number of issues. They charge a little on the high side for pruning, but they do very good work and we have found them to be very reliable. read more
