Given the allergies we have, it's important that we are careful in placing our orders. I order a California roll without sesame seeds, and yet it has cucumbers. I asked about it, and was told this was the original way they make it. None of this makes any sense, but I can tell you that's a lie. What happened?

California Roll March 14, 2025

Ordered takeout one weekday for lunch because we noticed their lunch special (11.95 for 3 rolls). Unfortunately was disappointing. David found a piece of plastic in his California roll. Overall we thought the rolls had too much rice (the eel roll especially). We'll stay loyal to Yoyogi in Gaithersburg, given that it's only 2 mins further from our new place and not significantly different in price.

After living only a couple minutes from Rainbow Sushi for over a decade, my family and I finally decided to try it for dinner. We dined in, but we observed that it is mainly for takeout orders. We all ordered bento boxes, and feared that it wouldn't be filling enough, so we also got the Singapore rice noodles. The bento boxes were definitely more than enough, and I was actually unable to finish it in one sitting. The miso soup was a bit salty, the rice was a bit dry, and the shumai was not authentic, but otherwise, the sushi was a good size and I enjoyed everything else! Since the restaurant has a lot of takeout orders, it seemed that they prioritized those over in-person diners, so the wait was quite long for our food to arrive. Best sushi in Germantown! The service is extremely quick and friendly, there is ample seating inside, and the food is fresh and delicious. I highly recommend for reasonable prices and great food. It's a very casual spot with easy in-and-out service. You can also order for pick up delivery and your food remains great quality. They have excellent lunch and dinner specials. My favorite rolls are the green devil roll and the tuna lover roll.

Sashimi Deluxe
Boris W.

I ordered a Sashimi Deluxe on DoorDash (the DoorDash price is $40, whereas the actual restaurant price is $36) and the dish itself was pretty good. As you can see from the picture below, there are a lot of sashimi pieces. 28 pieces in total (2 crab stick, 2 shrimp, 2 surf clams, 4 white tuna, 4 yellowtail, 4 red snapper, 5 tuna, and 5 salmon pieces were what I counted). The pieces are slightly smaller than most other sushi restaurant's sashimi pieces, so the dish felt like it actually didn't possess 28 pieces (more like 20). As for the taste, all of the pieces were fresh. The wasabi and ginger were on point. The taste was solidly good. The only reasons why I took away a point in the review are simple: 1) the imitation crab stick did not belong in the set, and 2) the pieces are definitely smaller compared to other restaurant's sashimi offerings.

I ordered takeout from here and it was very good! I loved that you could customize a sushi burrito! Everything was fresh and flavorful. I've also had their shrimp tempura box, which is a good option too!

Miso soup

As soon as I opened the lit, there is hair into my soup - I complained and the manager was unable to get the refund since it's a soup - she wanted me to drive back and pick up the cash- 30 minutes driving round trip is not work my driving. Don't think I will come back . Ps: missing order I got before and had to drive back and pick the food up -

The skinniest sushi burritos ever.

I ordered sushi burritos from them for lunch one day. After reading the reviews, I thought it would be a good place to try out. WRONG. Both my wife and I got SO SICK! I had food poisoning for 2-3 days. AWFUL. We ordered two... 1 - crab stick, tamago, yellow tail, smoked salmon, avocado and spicy mayo. 2 - shrimp tempura, unagi, spicy tuna, lettuce, cucumber, avocado and spicy mayo. The burritos were the smallest I've ever seen. They were more flat and oval, versus round like other sushi burritos. The rice was super sweet, way too sweet. And had a slight smell. Should have taken that as a red flag. We ate them and thought they were decent. But didn't plan to order again. Later in the day... I got so sick. My wife was sick for 1-2 days, my lasted for 2-3 days. It was horrible. NEVER AGAIN.

Singapore style noodles chicken

I never usually take pictures of my food I think it is tacky , except if I'm going out to dinner with my daughter and want to share with my son what we are eating. But there has been two times ( this is the second) time I'm doing this. I ordered. The Singapore style chicken noodles. First the chicken is cut so small you can tell this was chicken breast. So cutting chicken breast extremely dry. BUT the tinencey piece had NO flavor NONE NADA!!!!!!!. I asked for curry this dish as a whole is dry. It taste like they opened oodles of noodles got chicken from the corner of a flat top that was cooked this morning and threw 4 tablespoons of curry seasoning on it. Collectively I don't see a teaspoon of a shredded carrot no onion white or green onions in a mile of this dish. Now I understand that times have been tough and they want to conserve. I don't care the cost of food just do it taste good. That dish is so dry if I coughed you could see curry powder in the air. The sushi is not that good no big flavors of nothing either. Don't waste your money here find a another place. I ate the mango sushi and the egg roll the Singapore noodles I threw it in the garbage $14,00 down the drain.

Rainbow Sushi has some delicious Sushi and is right across the street from me so it's normally my go to when I'm in the mood for some Sushi. I normally call my order in for carry out and I must say they are very nice on the phone when placing a order. Food is always fresh and taste very delicious no matter what you order. I haven't had a bad meal yet. I will continue to dine at Rainbow Sushi.

I agree. It doesn't look like a fancy restaurant. But their sushi has grown on me and it actually is pretty good. I would highly recommend.

It's always been just okay not the best sushi, but a quick way to satisfy cravings. Today, however, was really disappointing. I ordered a nigiri set, which was fine, but the spicy tuna roll was inedible. I've never not been able to finish something before, and to have paid for it made it worse. The roll didn't look great from the start, and I should have not gotten it, but from previous times it's always been fine so I thought. The rice was super soggy and sticky, almost with a peanut butter-like consistency, which made it hard to even eat--it just stuck to the inside of my mouth. It was also too sour on top of that. The tuna filling was sparse, and I ended up only eating the tuna part out of guilt I really cannot believe the chef who made this thought it was okay to serve this. Unfortunately, after this experience, I don't think I'll be returning.

My partner and I came here for dinner on a whim and here are my thoughts. The food was really good,…read moreand the restaurant itself looked nice/cute but the service was... interesting. There were only 2 servers but they didn't really communicate or coordinate tables. It was a tad bit overwhelming to have ordered some appetizers to start, letting the first server know we still deciding over entrees, and then less than 1 minute later, the second server came up to us asking if we were ready to order. We let her know that someone had just taken our order and she responded by saying she saw that some appetizers had been put in but no entrees. A bit stunned, we politely let her know we weren't ready yet. It was only our first time here and sure, we vaguely glanced over the menu before coming in, but I didn't know what all I wanted to order as soon as I sat down.. Second server came back 2-3 minutes later after making a lap, asking again if we were ready now.. I wasn't, but now I felt a little pressured to just blurt out an order the next time she came back After that it became apparent that they didn't have sections or rotate tables, they just both served all of the tables. In total, we were probably only there for about 35 minutes, but we counted being checked in no less than 14 times between the 2 servers, which could've been nice if we needed anything in between bites, but it was a bit much. Also, the check was kind of pushed onto us as soon as we said we weren't interested in desserts, even though we hadn't finished our drinks yet! Safe to say this isn't exactly a sit down, relax and take your time kind of place. It felt much more fast paced than I was hoping for. That's not personally my vibe, but I would recommend this restaurant for people on their lunch break in the middle of a work day, in, out, done. Just know what you want to eat first ahaha.. For starters, we ordered the seaweed salad, gyoza and the chashu buns. The seaweed salad was pretty standard. The pork gyoza also pretty typical of Japanese places, nothing too special or unique about the filling (they were probably frozen/pre made) and despite the fact they were brought out pretty quickly, they were a bit lukewarm. I did appreciate the little hot peppers as a garnish though, that stood out from others. I put a few of them in the soy based sauce that came with it and it gave it a really nice kick. The buns were good as well but I wish they had a little more pork because that was the best part! For entrees I got the Tantanmen noodles with an add-on of chashu. I liked the chashu and the broth but I felt like there was hardly any ground pork in it. My partner got the katsu curry which was very tasty. We both enjoyed our meals but next time, I'd probably get what he got. Overall the place looked nice inside, there was free street parking available out front and a lot or garage if those filled up. I'd come back again though next time, I'll be prepared for a quicker paced meal.

Normally I wouldn't mind, but I'm currently pregnant and the smell in that area was very strong, so I politely asked if we could change tables. There was only one other table occupied at the time. After we ordered, the service was disappointing. The waitress never checked on us or asked how the food was. The only interaction we had was when we were ready to pay and leave. It honestly felt like we were being treated differently just because we didn't want to sit near the restroom. The food itself was okay, nothing special. I ordered the filet mignon and chicken combo with fried rice and the shrimp as my appetizer. Everything was delicious. The filet mignon was a tad overcooked to me even though I asked for medium rare. Next time I will ask for rare. I shouldn't be, but I am always in disbelief when I see the menu prices nowadays. It is expensive to dine out in general. Our server was slow and service could have been better but it was her first day. She refilled my husband's cup of soda and it was on the brink of overflowing. Also, I asked for extra napkins, which were never brought out. I had to ask another server who was clearing our table. Our teppanyanki chef was fun and awesome. He was entertaining. My favorite time was when he threw the shrimp at each of us and we tried to catch them in our mouths. All my family members caught it on their first try, but it took me literally eight times before I caught my first one. I would definitely like to dine here more frequently, but it is too expensive so it will be reserved only for special occasions. One safety concern I had was that the fire alarm cover in the women's restroom was detached. That should be a high priority to have that fixed. Also, one of the stalls in the women's restroom was out of order. I had to wait a while as the other stall was occupied.
