As we got there, its a small little restaurant next to Shoppers in Germantown. When we entered, as all reviews have noted, it was notable empty. The chefs were lounging on the chairs and over the tables and the cashier was as well; understandingly, it was slow and there as nothing to do. So as we entered, they didn't even really acknowledge us. I wasn't sure if we were supposed to sit at the teeny tiny table that had two setting set out but obviously could really only fit one person or the really big tables with 2 settings conspicuously placed out. I sat down at one but ended up moving to the other side with the bigger table because of the outlet to charge my phone and there was more lighting on the other side. As we sat, the cashier/waitress came over and asked us if we wanted anything to drink. We both selected water, which came out promptly but with no ice. She also gave us only one menu and walked away. I wasn't too sure what to do, so when she came back I asked for a second, which she then said was already at the table, but it was hidden standing up behind the plastic drink menu thing. We ordered the calamari appetizer (7.99) and the sushi boat (38.99 i believe). A little spoiled by the boat given at Yuraku, when it all came out on a plate and not a boat, I was a little disappointed but it wasn't much. The sashimi came out before the calamari did, but I didn't mind being it was only a few minutes in between. The sashimi tasted fine in pretty thick cuts. The calamari wasnt freshly cooked as I hoped, but it is what it is. The calamari was placed in a nice little oval plate. The lettuce and jalapenos were covered by the calamari. We continued to eat our food in peace. As we neared the end of our meal, we took a pause to just talk, and our waitress came over and began clearing our plates, but the calamari wasn't all done yet. We requested for her to leave which she did. But as I picked at the lettuce, I discovered it. ************In the dead center of the lettuce, beneath all the calamari, was EITHER a roasted/fried STINKBUG or a roasted/fried COCKROACH. It was disgusting. ******* (the only picture I took for the entire meal) To think, the bug could have been battered, and fried, and been even more hidden with the calamari or other food made me shutter. Initially I didn't believe that was really there, but my friend started picking at it and it definitely was a cooked stinkbug/cockroach. At this point in time, the waitress had left our check on the end of the table, and when I called her over, she then asked us if we wanted dessert, as if she hadn't printed out the check. I pointed out the fried bug. She picked up the plate, brought it over to the SUSHI CHEF (which had no part in cooking the calamari). He dug through the plate with his bare hands and I watched him pick up the bug. and put it back in. She continued to bring it to the back. She came out to the front seconds later, and took the calamari off our check, said "Sorry, this was the first time it has ever happened" and walked off. Understanding yes, I most definitely was not going to be paying for the calamari, but not offering anything off the rest of our check peeved me just a little. But I was too grossed out and wanted to leave ASAP. So we just paid and left. I assure you, I will NOT be ever coming back here again. read more

Long story short we ordered the calamari appetizer and as we finished the plate my friend saw something really dark and pointed out there was a roach. I was so disgusted. We finished the whole plate then there it was a roach hiding in the lettuce leaves. At least the waiter took off the calamari off our check but half off the meal would of been better. Food is good, but service is consistently poor. Every time I come here they get something wrong. Went here today, got the same thing I usually get, California Roll and shrimp tempura roll. I have never waited this long for sushi anywhere. After 20 minutes of waiting I got the server's attention, then he went to the sushi bar and said something and they started making my food; until then they were just standing around. The restaurant was not busy but somehow they never started making my food, meanwhile he's walking back and forth past me and ignoring me. Then he said they needed time to make the shrimp tempura, but if that was true he never bothered to tell me my food would be delayed. He then said he'd bring me some extra ginger which he also never did. Also, if you ask for water you get warm tap water with no ice. If you ask for ice you get a few small cubes which quickly melt in the warm water, so they also skimp on ice which is ridiculous. Plenty of better sushi restaurants. The first time I ever ate sushi was at this place five years ago, and it is still so good I keep coming back. I love the food as well as the calm, laid back atmosphere the shop has to offer. It is a great place to rewind and enjoy a nice relaxing meal after a day work or college. Normally when I come I have the spicy crunchy California roll which is beautifully served and tastes great!!!! I have tried other places in the past but this by far is my favorite and there is more than just sushi. There is chicken teriyaki, SUSHI BURRITO, and fried rice which are also some of my favorites, but I usually come for the lunch special which ends at 3:30 if anyone reading this wants to go and get two rolls. If anyone is new to trying sushi I highly recommend the spicy crunchy California roll I get one at least every time I go and it is fun to watch them make. I spend more time ripping restaurants a new one than giving them compliments. First off, sushi is Japanese. I have been studying Japanese budo since 1957 (formally, since 1968) among arts from the Okinawan, Chinese, and Burmese systems. I have been the Assistant Chief Instructor of my own instructor's school since 1971. Master Nishida is a huge fan of sushi. Even one of his kendo students in the 1970s was a black belt in sushi (yes, they have dans for sushi chefs). He is really particular about how the sushi is crafted and, for him, it has to be Japanese. Rainbow Sushi is not Japanese. I won't be taking Master Nishida there. I just go there and load upon sashimi and Chinese beer. And of course, a brain blast of wasabi with soy sauce. I have never had any kind of a rice roll there. I just go for the sashimi. read more

Discovered Rainbow Sushi by chance. From the first time, I've been hooked. Chef Ken is very inviting and the staff are very welcoming. That aside, the sushi is always fresh and if you're there at the right time, you may be able to get Hamachi Kama or even Uni fresh out of its shell; both not on the menu, so just ask. Being a frequent visitor, I'm lucky enough to sample these off-menu delicacies. I was even presented with a surprise; a salt and pepper lobster, very yummy. This place is sooo great and close to home, it's hard to not come here often! The service is quick when you sit inside and when you order pick up! I've never waited more than 10 minutes on a pick up order! I typically get the Cucumber and Eel Rolls and the Spicy Crunchy Tuna, which is a nice spin on spicy tuna rolls. I am here at least once a week. Under the last owner it was dirty and poor quality and I stopped coming here. The new owner has cleaned the store up and demands excellent quality from the chefs and staff. They are all great. I've recommended this restaurant to many friends and all have excellent meals and experiences. This nonsense about race is absurd. They do pay more attention to their regulars which any establishment does. They have many pleased customers from all races. The food is Good but the service is horrible. Our office ordered lunch from Rainbow Sushi website but they did not want to honor the description of the lunch special shown online. Then when we went to pay with a $50 Visa card we were told by the cashier that we can not use the entire gif card amount towards our 79$ purchase. So we used $40 of the gift card at Rainbow Sushi and was told that we could prolly use the 10 dollar balance at the grocery store. Then the next week I placed a simple pick up order for 6ct Shrimp tempura, went in to pick up door dash order and was told to wait she then went to the back kitchen served a table with their food and then went back into the back then came out and asked the number of my order and said nope not here what's the name made her aware of the name she then put the order on the counter with head turned away no eye contact and left from front counter. I believe in fairness, so we went here seeing that the reviews had 3.5 stars out of 20 reviews which isn't bad. I'm always willing to give a place a try... And this place wouldn't be bad....if they had an actual sushi chef, wore hair nets or something to keep hair out of my sushi. The waitress doubles as the sushi chef which is not a horrible thing except that I did not see her wash her hands when she went to make our sushi or put on gloves. Especially since she was playing with a tablet beforehand. We found hair in my chirashi lunch special and in my sister's rolls. Kinda gross. It's 4am and I've been up all night "eliminating" my veg sushi that I ordered for lunch Saturday 4 May 2013. I've had in the past,as I'm extremely wary of raw product, and I'm largely a vegetarian. I should have know something was definitely off kilter. One of the female servers (they're both pretty unfriendly--never seen either one crack a smile or initiate a greeting) was on the sushi table, rolling. Not sure why, but that was a red flag and I chose to ignore it. Bad bad idea. Upon consuming the rolls I stopped midway through. The avocado and celery in the roll were not at a cold temp. I spent the better part of the evening in the bathroom. At first I thought I might have botulism, but the cold sweats, weakness, throwing up eventually dissipated. I've had generally good "luck" there, thinking that the veg option is a much safer choice. I was wrong. I will not be taking my business there ever again. Forewarned is forearmed. read more

Ah, when I want good cheap sushi i come here. At lunchtime, for $7-$8 you can get a chirashi -- a bowl with a generous 8-10 pieces of raw fish and some rice. They also have a sushi lunch with 8 pieces of raw fish, again only $7-$8. Definitely a couple of bucks cheaper than a lot of other places, very generous with the fish, and pretty darn good. They also have udon and hot bowls of home-made noodles. So this place is right in the same complex as the Shoppers is. I ordered to go for a lunch chirashi bowl. It came with a bed of rice, wasabi and ginger plus a nice selection of 12 different types of sushi. I can't remember all that came in it but it had tuna, salmon, white tuna, crab, egg, and tobiko for sure. All of the fish were of large portions and the price of $9 was a total steal.
