Stirling's resident Yelp expert, Nicola C recommended here with the disclaimer of "I don't know what it's like during the day though." So, my friend and I pitched up to be greeted by two regulars at the door who told us the pub was closed. "Awwww, really?" I said. "Naw hen!" followed by much guffawing on their behalf. In we stumbled, both having a laugh at the two oldies. The bar was empty apart from one other old gent which seems reasonable for 4.30pm on a Friday. We got a couple of drinks (Thistly Cross bottles for £3.50 each which is what I pay for them in the supermarket!) and sat by the fire (which thankfully someone came and stoked the hell out of so it was absolutely roaring, and scorching hot). The bar had a nice relaxed vibe. By the time we were leaving one of the regulars was well steaming and came over to talk to the Australian lassies and generally give us a bit of a ribbing. He got us to sign the visitors book and was generally pretty funny - I even got a kiss as I was leaving. Lucky me. So, would I recommend going here? Yes, I definitely would, even just for the laughs you'll have. The fire was warm, the seats were comfy and they had a nice selection of crisps/chips for snacking on. It's quite a small pub and it can get pretty busy on Friday and Saturday evenings, but the clientele are really friendly and warm, as are the staff, so it's not an issue. I've been drinking in here for well over ten years with a crowd of friends and it's become the traditional venue for our Christmas Eve pintage. The place was bought over several years ago by a well-known local publican who had a good reputation for fixing pubs up, getting them running well and moving on. He's never moved on from The Sheaf - which must tell you something! On draft there's always a really good selection of guest ales as well as the standards. There's been a real focus on ale in here and you're always assured something interesting to try. The staff are top-class, I'm always greeted with a warm smile. For me The Sheaf comes into it's own on a cold winter's night - it's small, cosy, there's an open fire, auld men with dogs, great malts, tasty ales and a warm welcome.

An old pub, the main bar area is pretty cozy to say the least. About the size of a decent double bedroom. Despite this, I was assured by one of the welcoming regulars that they recently had 36 people in at one time. He did admit however that, "they all knew each other very well by the end of the evening". With an open fireplace in the room, I was also advised of the system adopted on a cold day where everyone periodically shuffles round clockwise to avoid some poor soul getting toasted by the flames. We enjoyed a chat with the landlord and regulars whilst sipping a few bottles of Caer Edin Dark from the aforementioned Kinneil Brew Hoose. The 5 star rating reflects the friendliness of all we met and the undoubted character of the place. I highly recommend a visit to this pub for everyone but the unfortunately claustrophobic.

They are proud of their namesake, which centres on the story of the black greyhound of Linlithgow, whose master was imprisoned on an island in the middle of the nearby Loch and sentenced to starve to death. Everyday the greyhound swam out to her master with food and ended up saving his life. The locals call themselves 'Black Bitches' after the dogs symbolic loyalty. A great local, if quiet, tavern serving a range of real ales. It also has a nice beer garden. Apparently there is a folk music night every third Sunday of the month too.

The Bitch wasn't always on our radar, but on the occasions we did come in it was perfectly adequate.
